Katherine are y'all in Florida? Because I was watching Ted talk Tampa Bay there is a drum circle in Siesta Key that has met for years. I had only heard of the DEMONIC beats and spirits. This is very interesting

I am 72 I fell in love with family. I joined a drum circle in Raleigh and I really enjoyed it I started my own drum circle at our senior center and it was really going good. I explained how it was so good for pain and good for stress and good for fighting disease i’m bringing people together and I was building up quite a few people that will coming. I painted drums that I made from coffee cans and painted water bottles to make rattles and I accumulated several percussion instruments plus I bought several more drums including and drums and Buffalo healing drums. And I was getting very excited My group was getting excited. Then all of a sudden I started coming down with horrible pain in my shoulder I’m for us I tried to babysit but then I ended up going through therapy for my shoulder and a Cortizone shot for my shoulder. All I could think about was getting back to my drumming. Then for some reason and for no reason my sciatic nerve started acting up on my right leg. It was the most horrible pain. So I told my shoulder therapy I was gonna have to leave it because of the what was working my leg was hurting worse than my shoulder. Well my shoulder got better and my leg is getting worse. I’m supposed to go for a lumbar shot on Valentine’s Day. Just when I was teaching everybody the drumming was for pain I started getting attacked by pain. I’m on 900 mg of gabapentin and a muscle relaxer I have been sleeping on my couch for over a month. I just don’t seem to be getting better. I am still and I hope that I will and I cannot wait to get back to my senior center drum circle on my Raleigh drum circle. I wish you best of luck with your drum circle. I love playing the drums.

I just experienced my first drum circle this month. It was great. There are some purists in the comments I see. I hope I don't run in to too many of y'all out there. It was kinda like whining meanwhile these ladies are not only doing a great job, they are spearding information that will be very helpful to many ppl.

They are made by Remo. Google “Remo Versa” and they should show up. There are three types, and three sizes of each type. Green are the Timbaus, red are the tubanos, and brown are the December. They are often a package of three, but you can buy them individually through places like West Music online.

These ladies are very pleasant and well meaning....But, go to any drum circle today and you will find many more real hand drums (Djembe, Ashiko, Conga, Bongo, etc) than any other. They are indeed the "Drums of the Past" and have the song of ages within them. Those "Drums of the Future" are akin to drums for children, although the professional level of Remo Djembes/ashikos (not pointed out) and other 'light weight' fiberglass hand drums, do serve a purpose and I have/use some, although the sound does not compare. Once a hand drummer discovers the joyful power of rhythm, they will not want a conga shaped drum that the top can be removed for a frame drum, unless they are teaching a class. The difference may be that their 'teaching' of rhythm can be done on pots, pans and even pizza boxes (beginning Bodhran frame drums) and the introductory value still achieved (plus their logistics of hauling 'classroom demonstration' equipment eased).... but the spirit of true (therapeutic) hand drumming, found in many drum circle/rhythm gatherings, is greatly found within the 'song of the drum' and has much inherent value to the player. Teaching a class, with paper drums may be easier and as an introduction, but it is like portraying an orchestra with all Kazoos, and I feel the salient difference is not expressed here.

The ensemble that you played was 'Ensemble 1' from Will Schmid's World Music Drumming: A Cross-Cultural Curriculum. While these are traditional Ghanaian rhythms, I'm not sure that this particular ensemble is authentic to the Ewe people of Ghana. The closest I can find in the text is that the teacher is to 'connect the music to the traditions of West Coast Africa.

Nice video but your idea of condemning the spirituality of drumming is out of place. You have to understand the spiritual importance of drumming even if for recreational purposes.

I am shocked when people call themselves musician.Its a big word .It's amazing to see when people can just play few beats and few chords start believing they are musicians .It's just like if I know how to cure cold and cough I start calling myself a doctor . You are great guys but it takes a lot to become a musician.

my point of view is that you cannot trivialize a drum rhytm associating it with the word Ham and cheese ,In this way the rhytm loses its original power as the mind will connect the playing with a sort of sandwich , we have to be aware of the underhand way in wich our unconscius mind works......

I agree with the psychological and physical benefits of group drumming but the way that these ladies have trivialized the history and culture of the drums and rhythms they are utilizing is honestly appalling. Calling the hybrid Remo drum with no history or culture the “drum of the future,” and chanting “ham and cheese” over culturally important Ghanaian rhythms.....as white people and as music therapists, we need to do better than this.

real drum cirlces do not lead with drum lessons. ever. this is a class, not a drum circle.

i have experinced 30 years of drum circles. i could do better in my sleep.

Thousands of people were eyewitnesses to what he did. Ancient biblical sites spoken of in the Bible continue to be on earth. Treasure seekers follow the Bible to find the gold and silver. And only with your Freewill that God gave you can you pretend the Bible is not true real and accurate. List your proof that I have a fairytale. No I mean proof physical evidence proof. This is seriously pathetic and it's a shame to show people such a pitiful exemple of what are drum circles. If only they could show a little bit of respect to the culture they badly taking this knowledge. It's like pretending showing and tasting traditional "Haute Cuisine" and serving peanuts. And then, real musician with open heart and doing a profond work of etnomusicologia about these drums and drums circles, well we suffer from these bad examples. An advice. Go and learn. Then teach
