It would be really cool if there was a show that stared someone who struggled with face recognition, but he was so good at detecting voices, body language, and object identification that he made a great detective or something.

Watch the "Beauty Inside'' it is a Korean Series but their is an Eng subtitles for non-korean speakers.

Could super recognizers be used to identify missing children? Perhaps they could be exposed to many missing children's pictures and if they were ever to see them on the street or wherever, they would recognize and be able to bring them to safety. Especially since changes due to age do not seem to phase the ability.

Certain features are very specific and make easy to recognise people and some characteristics are so special that they make it possible to recognise someone just to look at part of the face. I really empathise with these people it must be a real struggle for them.

I think so. I remember a 1st grade teacher came up to me as an adult and said hello and knew my name and how she knew me. Also an elementary school classmate did the same in adulthood and knew me and family. The way he named off my family, I figured out he knew me during the elementary school years. I unfortunately did not know him. I think some people just study the face longer and then it gets burned in their memory.

I wanted to hear more from the lady doctor with face blindness and how she goes from day to day not being able to remember faces and just going off charts

I'm face blind so it is so interesting to see a report about it and other people with it. I've even gotten an email from the expert at Harvard featured in this video, Brad Duchain I think his name was, so it was neat that I got to see what he looks like even though I'm not going to remember lol.

J Jones i know it has been half a year but for me it is kind of like this, you now when you meet someoen of a "race" you are not used to, like the old "how do you tell them apart", or "they look the same" it is kind of like that, like when they said mother i tried to picture my mum, and i got greying hair that is sort of a lighter shade of my own and a scar, i also got shorter then i am and sometimes wears a purple jacket, as well as rarely uses makeup, it really helps that we moved to where we live right now so i can just listen for her, if someone dont have the same accent as people where i live right now well it is her

Ashley Leong i’m face blind and i have no problem finding my cat under many similar looking ones, i do recognise my cat on the way it looks & walks and thats different on every single cat.

At 4:30 the "grotesque" face upside down still creeped me the fuck out. When it was turned right side up though, I actually jumped though because it was so appalling.

I don't recognize faces or remember names easily, so I smile at everyone. People are scared sometimes but I explain I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings. I say I'm sorry but I have to do my name thing, what is your name again? People are very kind, some people smile when they see me and tell me what their names are and where I know them from. I'm always so happy when they do that.

I have a little face blindness. When I saw Dallas Buyer's Club, there were a few actors in the movie (friends of Matthew McConnaughey) who all had light Caucasian skin, short reddish brown hair, blue eyes and mustaches. I got confused in the movie because I thought they were all the same person. I was wondering how this one person kept changing clothes so quickly and changing locations so quickly. It seemed impossible and then it dawned on me that they were different actors. I will have to watch the movie again at home where I can pause it and figure out differences between the actors. I have learned to be really good at noticing little distinct features on people's faces to tell them apart, or their clothes or hairstyle or way of walking. Many of my friends dress in distinctive or strange manners or have tattoos and this might be why. And I always notice if someone changes their hairdo or hair color. I guess I also pay way more attention to voice, height and body shape. Another film I saw was a silent film that was in black and white. There were four English Caucasian male actors in it. They all had dark hair and dark eyes and mustaches and the same hairdo. I had to stop watching the film because I could not follow along. I just recently realized that this is why I never remember people's names when I first meet them. It is because I am using all my brain power to notice their features so I can "recognize" them and so I don't register their names. But what is a name without a face? I took the face blindness test and scored lower than average. And when I was a teen, and would get high, I couldn't recognize anyone. I was at a concert and kept going up to people thinking they were my friends who I had gotten separated from. Well, my friends finally found me, and in the meantime, I had made a lot of new friends. This experience, along with just watching part 2 ot the CBS face blindness video leads me to believe that the problem has to do with getting certain neurotransmitters to the area since all the people with face blindness, except for the tumor woman, had structurally sound parts of that brain. They just must not be getting the correct type of innervation to the area. Because it seems for me that my face blindness waxes and wanes. And it has never been so bad as though few times I got high as a teenager. I recognize my mom primarily from her hairdo (long braid in back) and her body size and shape (petite apple shape) and her clothing style (athletic). My mom is caucasian and blond with blue eyes and a bit older. I was at Safeway the other day and saw a young thirty something hispanic woman with the same body shape and height as my mom, and she had athletic shoes and jogging pants and a hoodie and a ball cap like my mom wears, plus she had a long black braid. She had brown skin and dark brown eyes, but my brain kept telling me that she was my mom. That is how much my brain pays attention to hair style and clothing and body size. When I think of this woman, she and my mom seem like the same person.

I wish this episode had explored how those with face blindness DO connect with and recognize others - through their voices, demeanors, clothing, body shape, etc. And how have blind people managed? I'd like to know the coping mechanisms. If I had the condition, I might tell someone who I should recognize but don't that I have face blindness. I wonder how Brad Pitt got it.

I am not face blind but I have always had poor short term memory and it takes me longer to remember people’s names and faces, all my life. I’m actually better as I’ve gotten older because of being more aware of this. I most often recognize a face but not sure where I’ve seen them or who they are.

that super recognizer lady would probably get a lot of people who got a stalker vibe from her, especially now when people might think she was on Facebook obsessing over them, because who would notice or remember things like you walked by me 5 years ago and we said good morning... ugh that sucks.

See, this is interesting! I have decent facial recognition, especially with celebrities and my family, but I seem to categorize faces differently from the people I know. The arch of a brow, the thickness of the eyelids, the shape of the jaw/chin, the way the mouth moves... I can put those together to recognize a face. I used to go by hair also, but that caused problems when people changed their hairstyle. But then I found out my friends didn't have to jump through all those hoops! How goofy.

I probably have a mild form of face blindness. Like, I can picture faces in my mind and recognize the faces of people I know really well, but sometimes people approach me who know me and I have no idea who they are. I recognize people more by their style, clothing, and hair. It's really hard for me to follow the plots of movies and shows, because I can't keep track of who the characters are.

Oh! I have that too but I also had adhd. It makes things more challenging. I don't know whose side the characters are on, like the good/bad guys. So I don't watch tv/movies much.

I feel so bad for that little boy. It must be so difficult especially for a child who should be making friends.

I'm pretty sure I have this as an offset of my autism, but not to the extremes of these people, I do recognize family friends and coworkers though sometimes ill mistake 2 similar looking coworkers for eachother, and occasionally if someone looks vaguely similar to someone I know it will take a little bit of staring to make sure they aren't them... Biggest issue is short term and long term, if its the first time meeting someone and I don't think to look for indicators I might walk away and come back unable to distinguish who they were I often have to ask customers at work if they were the ones I was helping. The other issue is when someone I have not seen in a while recognises me and then I essentially have to give them a blank stare untill they reference something I can correlate to past interactions. I can visualize some people but even though it seems like I'm visualizing them as a whole I sometimes realize I have an easier time visualizing them if they have very distinctive appearance indicators.

"I'm someone gets a haircut, you can still recognize them." Yeah, no. Easy for the super recognizer to say :(

I gave my 22 month old a super severe haircut, and now I cannot recognize him at all. I'm afraid I'll lose him at a playground and take the wrong kid home, so I try to make sure I know what his outfits look like.

I have the ability to recognise people upon first seeing or meeting them, whether they have face blindness, or partial face blindness. Most of them seem to be of Irish descent, as would be suggested here among the participants of this show.

I would love to take a test to see if I could recognize my mom, sister, etc. I don’t even know how many times I’ve watched movies, and wondered at some point “is that (name), or a different person with the same hair color?” And the first time I watched captain America the winter soldier, I went the whole movie not realizing black widow was in it, because her hair was straightened. In infinity war, I didn’t recognize her or steve, because she was blonde and he had a beard. It took me a hot minute to realize who they were, lmao. At least when Thor changed his hair, they explicitly showed him getting his hair cut so I wouldn’t be confused

the number of people in these comments who think they are super-recognizers because they knew George Clooney and Madonna...stop. Lol. They said it was extremely rare for someone to be like the woman in this video. Those celebrity pictures were easy (if you're not face blind). But would you be able to remember what the neighbor who lived three houses down from you when you were 6 looks like? probably not...

@thunderinthevalley I know! It took me years and years to figure out I have this and that it's not normal. I actually argued with a woman and tried to convince her she was my mother when I was a kid. She had the same hair and body shape, and she was on my street. We ran home and my mom was in the kitchen. I then tried to argue with her that she was outside even though there was no way she could have beat us back.

I might be a super recognizer too, because I nailed the majority of those young celebrity pictures. However, I know for a fact that I'm horrible with names. I ran into an old schoolmate the other day who I hadn't seen in twenty years, but I got her last name confused with another girl I went to school with, both named Alexis.

Ive had it most of my life. When I start a job I write down the name and then personality traits body size clothing preferences. Height hairy arms or no hair on arms tattoos.. Anything to be able to call them by name. I also have auditory processing disorder.. Makes life difficult. I had a lot of head injuries as a child from 12 weeks to 18 years old. From a very abusive parent.

I think I am a super recognizer. On all of those faces of celebrities they showed younger I knew who they all were. If we see someone when we’re out I can tell you where we know them from even if it was a long time ago. If we see an actor in a show/movie even if it’s not a well known one I can tell you what other movies they’ve been in. The weird thing though is that I have name blindness if that’s a thing. When I meet someone I won’t remember their name even right after they say it and even if I’ve met them several times I struggle for their name. In my work it’s really hard because I rotate always working with new people and I can never remember their names. I have a photographic memory for spelling though. If I see a word one time I will never forget how to spell it. It’s so funny how brains work.

At 68, on December of 09, I read an article about Jane Goodall, who had contacted Dr. Sacks to learn about Face Blindness. He replied explaining that he suffered from it as well as his bother. She learned that her sister had as well.. I realized that it was what I recently had noticed about my sister. We both have a genetic problem and had not recognized it until our later sixties. Can't recognize a face so I can't attach a name to it.

The George clooney one was easy to recognize for me.

I think I'm a super recognizer. I can always tell who a newborn baby looks like when everyone else thinks they look like nothing. I went to take the quiz but couldn't find it.

Me too! I’ll recognize acquaintances from my childhood-I’m 64. And like you, I’ll recognize traits in newborns similarity to other family members that few others see. I’ll look for the quiz as well. (Added on: I took a test online and got 8/14, considered above average, but a super recognizer would get 11 or more out of 14). The test was set up with facial profiles instead of front faces in some examples which to me made it extra hard.

I have partial face blindness. I worked with two sisters for about three years. Later on I was told that they were not sisters. I can't tell them apart. For me they look like twin sisters. But apparently they aren't even from the same family.

I can tell most celebrities apart, but if you just show me their faces, I can't. It must be something more. Hair color and shape Etc. I've always loved Tina Turner. And I think one of the reasons is she has gigantic hair and big lips and high heels and whole look. If it's someone like Jennifer Lopez, I don't know who she is.

Is there "name blindness"? I recognize people but forget their names instantly. Even with coworkers I have to really concentrate and even then, if I don't see them for a few days, I can't remember their names.

I got all of the before they were famous pictures, but not sure if I'm a super recognizer i think those were just easy pictures showing features we all have the same types of features that continue to grow and lose the same elasticity in places, without plastic surgery i think most people can recognize those particular pictures well maybe not most, but many

If my kid couldn't recognize me I'd get a face tattoo. A little flower or butterfly on the cheek.

I remember a story about how babies can see extreme facial subtleties. And how as we get to about 2, this quality diminishes to what is a normal recognition ability.

The movie, "How She Left Me" or "Kung Paano Siya Nawala" brought me here..

I know this is probably perplexing to some people. I also use mannerism and voice as a means to detect people. I'm not focused on appearance although I do understand what eye sores are, they rarely happen to me and it's a new vocabulary that I've added to my list this year...

new york times metropolitan diary for 2-18-24 has stories of i was a regular, went in, gave me my usual. some told of being gone 10 yrs, the istanbul restaurant was closed but a guy on the street said hello i work here now. many stories of waiters remembering after years..

Thankfully I never forget a voice once I hear it, so I only need a little bit of chit chat and I know who I am conversing with....

it must suck not to be able to visualize what people you love look like, i can understand that.. but how much of a person is in their appearance anyway? maybe look at the bright side, which is all we can do with things in life that suck sometimes when we can't change them, and see t as a positive, maybe it would make you less shallow in a way, i mean, if someone you love got burned, and recovered and was able to walk around and talk etc. miraculously, but only their appearance changed, you wouldn't be missing what they used to look like, because you wouldn't even remember.. you could still see them in the moment and be attracted to them or not be attracted to their current looks, but who knows? interesting documentary, and they seem very bright, able to find strategies to cope with whats missing and that painter is awesome! "you have to be charming" and for anyone who knows they have this condition and still gets offended when they don't recognize you... really? are there such people? i assume they were talking about acquaintances, who they might not want to have their first impression or their identity tied to just this condition, so thats not the first thing they say to someone they just met, so these people aren't aware they have prosopagnogsia

Are they able to use other cues such as the persons voice to recognise them?

Back when I was in High school (all girls) we had a security guard who was extremely good at recognizing faces. One day after school, a group of girls walked in at the front gate and was yelled to a halt. It turned out he recognized that one of the girls was not from our school and tried to sneak in😂😂 We had like maybe nearly 3000 students, by the way, and not to mention that there would be new comers every year.

Did they show the super-recognizers upside down faces?

I effectively have face blindness with cars. When someone drives me in a car, I have no idea what car we took. We can walk back to a completely different car and I will get in the passenger seat no questions asked.

I wonder if this happens during a movie or during a TV show (or season), and those afflicted with face blindness would lose track of the characters and thus the whole plot (who's good, who's bad)...?

If the characters change clothing, yes. But say for walking dead as an example, it's relatively easy because the characters keep the same outfits/styles most of the time. I've learned to dedicate most memory to voice and persona as well. So if the actor stays in character then it's easier to associate them with themselves throughout a series. As an added note, this is a recognition but not a memory problem. I used to be a cashier years ago and I had certain regular customers that I'd always have to manually type in their credit card numbers since they wouldn't swipe. I unintentionally remembered all of these credit card numbers in a short amount of time. When one of them came in and tried to hand me their card I typed in their credit card number without taking it from them. This scared the customer and I was fired as a result. My manager was a prick anyway. Point being is I have a great memory but if I see someone I've worked with for many years in a setting that I can't associate them to then I'll never recognize them... At least not before the point that they are offended and yelling at me.

I like leverage, but it's exhausting because of this very reason. I'm a huge supernatural fan, because everyone has distinct characteristics I can judge by, and of course their acting is top notch! So when I'm coerced into watching a new or "difficult" show, I recharge my batteries by watching supernatural or something I have seen thousands of times. Right now I really want to see astronauts wives, but I can't keep track of anyone except for Betty, because I know her voice from when she was on Reba.

I definitely have a hard time with keeping track of characters in shows and movies. Interestingly enough, I don't have a hard time with animated things. Maybe it's because the hair and clothing are more consistent. Come to think of it, that's probably why I like anime so much lol.

I was watching criminal Minds on cable, when they'd show several shows out of order. It was a long time before I realized that at some point they'd switched blonde characters. I was confused because one had a baby, and then I'd see an episode where a blond woman is talking to Reid about one day having children, and I'd think boy, the writers aren't being consistent here with character development. Like I had no idea they weren't the same person. But in watching shows with my husband I often have to ask who a character is. Oddly, this is a lot more likely to happen with pale blond people than other ethnicities, unless the characters all have similar haircuts/clothes/skin tones. I am, however, really good at identifying voices (which comes in handy as a court reporter. I may not recognize a lawyer's face, but I can recognize his voice!)

I recognised every single one of those younger people - but I'm still shit with faces. I guess I'm a frikkin enigma.

Once everyone starting wearing masks for COVID, I discovered how I could not recognize familiar people at all when most of their faces were obscured. I never realized that this could happen. I have no facial blindness at all, by the way.

I don't super recognize but I remember faces for a while. I sold these 2 shirts to a lady one green one white. I saw her a year later wearing the green one at Disney and was like cool shirt she was like thanks I said the white one you bought was nice too. She was like 🤨 how do you know I bought this in white? I sold it to you and then told her the time and place. Maybe because a year to me isn't so far away but I think I remember scenarios more than faces if I drive past a dentist that used to be a blockbuster 16 years ago it all just comes back and I can easily remember being inside that blockbuster once. I think seeing her triggered the memory from a year ago.

Are you talking about the whole person or just the face? My prosopagnosia or face blindness is a comorbidity of my Asperger Syndrome, so my perception of it may differ from a person who's "just" face-blind. But: Yes, I'm able to find people and/or peoples faces attractive or "cute". Lets say I meet person A and in my opinion person A has an attractive face. An hour later I'm sitting at home thinking about person A. I will not be able to remember how her whole face looked like, but I'll be able to remember that I found her and/or her face "attractive" and maybe some detail like "she had cute freckles". But I'm also not entirely sure what you mean with "attractive". Are you only talking about the looks? Things that make a person more attractive for me include stuff like no make-up, good hygiene, intelligence, .... I can't stand having any liquids on my skin like lotions or make-up (I'm male and with make-up on myself I mean make-up for a costume) and I feel uncomfortable if a woman with clearly visible make-up in her face gets too close to me. So that would make her unattractive in some weird way. And for "the love thing" - I'm not sure. I think I've never loved anyone in my life so far.... but that has nothing to do with attractiveness, right?

I can't say that this is true for everyone with prosopagnosia. For me, it is not something I usually recognize right away (physical attractiveness) with others. If I do it is more based on an overall body image/type, not the face. If someone asked me if someone is physically attractive, I could look and tell them, but it is not something I notice right away. Since I don't remember the face I tend to base whether or not someone is attractive on their personality. As far as love, no problem with that! In fact, my dad (who has a mild case of prosopagnosia) met my mom because of his facial recognition difficulties! He ended up going up to the same freshman at college (my mom) multiple times when helping at orientation without realizing it. My mom thought that my dad really liked her and the rest is history!

Happyist No. never had a girlfriend. 28.yo because i don't find people attractive its quite bothersome. sometimes i think about just ending my life, this is more of a issue if you're a guy. with this type of problem. anxiety is high all the time. i avoid going out. and dropped out of high school. have not even had a job at all... this issue has made my life a total disaster for me..BIG FAT FAILURE STAMPED all over it.. i do admit i can only reconize 2 people off the bat but these two people dony want to have anything to do with me anymore.

Happyist for me, yeah. I can look at a face and find it attractive but then I can't picture it in my head later. I would be able to remember individual facial features i.e. pretty eyes or freckles or nice hair or something and that's how I would recognize them later It's not that i can't see faces i just can't recognize them again once i see them. Just my experience

aesthetic attraction is not the same thing as loving someone

thing is it's not only optical with faces, (perhaps depending on gravity) it can also be the complete identity. i have zillions of most detailes memories in my brain - but one detail missing on the utter majority is "who was with me in that moment". i can then calculate the feeling i had in said situation. was i in love? was the topic i spoke about with that someone perhaps a clue? even when people tell me who they are, i still have no clue which of my zillion memories belong to THEM. when they say "we once talked about xyz", i can then almost recall the entire talk we had had - and will perhaps say "ooh, right, so that was you who said xyz? okay, thanks for your help". all this is the job of gyrus fusoformis, i believe part of that temporal lobe. it's like dyslexia, only for people not for letters.

I can put glasses on and people wont recognize me instantly.

This was interesting. I just realized I am a super recognizer. I never knew there was a term for it, just that I was very good with faces. I can almost always guess adults by their childhood photos, especially famous people because their faces are so recognizable. As i tell my husband, all my "talents" are fun but basically useless. lol

Well in my mind, face recognition is about the connections your brain makes to certain names and faces and other emotions so that you know who someone is based on their face. I would like to believe that the part that was removed from her brain had some bridges in it that were necessary for making those connections.

It's easy to say that for people who have had brain traumas, but that would account for no one who has this in hereditary form. Also the broken connection would be seen in the hereditary group's scans, but it isn't. 2.5% of the population are estimated to have this to some degree so your point is nullified by this. What I would 'like to believe' is that those of us who do have this genetic trait will better society down the road. As frustrating as it's been growing up, I remember persona/character of a person more than physical attributes because of it. So in a very forceful way many of us tend to literally overlook any external characteristics like sex, race, etc.

Lauren Socha He's my Papillon named Gir. He was the weird one in the litter. All of his siblings looked like normal Papillons where he was lanky and goofy looking. I had to have him. :)

I had the serious misfortion of pausing at 4:09 and flipping my phone upside down

I can recognize people I'm familiar with but I have a hard time once they're out of context. I've had creeps talk to me like they knew me and it's creepy as hell. I especially hate people who are persistent about it too, move on.

I can also recognise 100s of faces if they look exactly the same way as before. I remeber all my classmates faces from school n college. Didn't know these type of people are called Super Recognisers. I feel great 😂

A Spears, I got them all too very quickly except Mike Wallace (b/c I don't even know who he is). But I'm definitely not a super recognizer. I thought those were kinda easy, I guess...maybe there's a spectrum of sorts? Some might be a bit more observant than others, but there've definitely been times when I don't recognize someone I should have lol and I don't remember random people I see walking to the library once unless something really stood out about them
