Fabric decoupage on furniture

Using fabric decoupage to embellish your furniture project is a fantastic way to incorporate patterns and designs. With larger design repeats, fabric can create a dramatic and eye-catching effect on your furniture. I have personally used fabric decoupage on numerous projects and the results have been stunning. Today, I am revisiting one of my old tutorials from six years ago and adding a brand-new voice-over with additional insights. Join me as I take you through the step-by-step process, and even if you've seen this tutorial before, it's definitely worth a rewatch. You might even get a good laugh from the blend of my voice and actions. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment, and I'll get back to you as soon as possible. I hope you enjoy this tutorial, even if it's one you've seen before.

I did my first fabric overlay about 15-20 years ago. It was so much fun to do. I have thought about it a lot through the years. At the time, people thought I was crazy. But, that dresser held up through 4 rambunctious children, 3 boys and a girl. I finally had to take it off after many years of waiting for it to “die”, but it just wouldn’t. I also did it on the backer board of a beautiful oak wood headboard a few months ago, with a masculine woven pattern and painted it a color very similar to Graphite. It sold SO fast. The lady was just thrilled. It really is a fun project doing this. I’m also glad that someone as experienced and amazing as yourself would look back and see things they would have changed. Makes me feel a lot better about questioning my own past choices.

Love the black floral fabric. Would love to get my hands on a design like that, whether it be fabric, decoupage paper, tissue paper or anything!

Greetings from Athens Jonathon. Much though I liked this video on fabric decoupage, I still prefer my own uptake: I did this seven years ago and it is still pristine. I cut the material to the exact size of the front of the drawers and the sides of my piece of furniture, I dunked one piece at a time into a preparation of strong fabric starch, “stuck” it on the piece of furniture, waited for it to dry naturally:and… voila! No need for sealing or anything else… Only downside: the room had an unpleasant smell while the starch was drying… Try it out and let me know! 🎉😊

All your work is beautiful. You’ve given me courage to try this fabric decoupage on some of my many “garbage” furniture finds. I travelled extensively for work and brought back interesting fabrics. Now in retirement, I have time to try different projects and this technique is certainly one I will be attempting.

I would have brought the fabric out to the outer edge of the front, I think, because that narrow strip of decoupage isn’t enough for me. I also don’t agree with your decision to leave the inside of the door and the shelves unpainted. Maybe I would even decoupaged the inside back OR the shelves. But very pretty. Thanks for the demo.

PS I got this method from Diane Henkler’s website “In my own Style”. Diane is the person who gave out a DIY chalk paint recipe a couple of years before Annie Sloan’s paints became widely available. Credit where credit is due…❤

I hadn't seen this one before, Jonathon. It's gorgeous! But yes, I think gold leaf on that top decorative piece would have been great. However, someone loved it enough to snatch it right up so bravo! I like the green color inside, it's a really timeless green. Purple would have been nice, too but the green is lovely.
