I get the feeling that Mingus would have chased the conductor/arranger down the street with a knife.

Everyone here doesn’t know enough to know Mingus have fired the two soloists quickly. Their phrases and choices were awful, there was no line there. Just no.

I’m sorry but Mingus would have fired that musician immediately. That solo was not good. His repeated figures should have been played 0 times not many times. Also Mingus would have have been unhappy with everyone head cans. Does Jaischa Heifetz do that? Nope. Ding-ding-ding-ding. Thank god that Mingus’s ghost has the NYO youth orchestra to listen to…their soloists played this tune better

Such a great platform to have such a brilliant orchestral arrangement from Tom Trapp. Soloists are on top form and the audience went all the way with them, ace performance from the MO as usual !

This is a brilliant tribute. And the symbolism of an all white classical style orchestra with two excellent black soloists delivers an important message. Especially at this moment in history, where it appears we whites have begun to understand. So the text isn't there (but Mingus recorded it with no text as well on his album Ah um). However, the anger is deeply expressed in the rhythmic shouting. It ain't Mingus and it ain't Dolphy... but choosing a bass clarinet for the solo is a tribute to Dolphy (who played both alto and bass clarinet on the Mingus versions).

I like Hutchings' spiffy Fifties-style hat and sport-jacket. And his playing. And his choice of horn, which echoes that of "Original Faubus Fables" - even if he plays it a bit smoother than on that original version.

Mingus would have fired him very notes into that solo. Fortunately because the ending parts were worse. I mean it’s outrageously unacceptable figures being repeated there.

@@AquaticMammalOnBicycle Wouldn't put quite that far. But I suspect that Mingus would've scowled at him and shouted something like, "Play some MFin' MUSIC, man!" You're right in that there doesn't seem to be a line through it. It's as if he never practiced the tune, or he's WAY out of shape on playing over changes, or he really doesn't want to be there at all. Or, as if he's so used to tenor that he plays stuff that'd power through everything with sheer sound on one. But on bass clarinet, it doesn't quite work.

Despite the skill of the musicians and the acclaim for reviving this wonderful work by Charles Mingus, I cannot forget that this is a political piece against a racist governor. A showpiece, where battles, suffering and despair emerge. But here it seems like film music to me, there is no tension, there is no soul ...

  • @flavoredwallpaper

A song can be more than one thing. Even totally divorced from its original intent, as a political piece, the music speaks for itself. A child with no knowledge or understanding of history could listen to this and appreciate it. It's a kicking tune. And it's ok for a song to have political meaning and also just kick ass purely musically.

I have no beef with this version. It has a nice Mingusonian swing to it. Mingus would have been proud that justice was done to his composition, if not the circumstances that led him to create the composition itself. It's not everyday that a rendition of composition can make you feel like your in a corner African American church, a Bayou juke joint, and a 1970s New York City avant garde jazz loft at the same time.

There’s also the question of licensing. I’m sure that Sue Mingus would’ve made sure that the publishing was covered, and if people were going to use some thing in a major production that the Mingus estate would get compensation.
