My Faber-Castell Tk-Fine Vario L mechanical pencil is broke. What a shame to see such a fine pencil die so quickly. I hope you guys enjoy my little tribute.

@@Guifross Must have fallen at a bad angle :\ that's unfortunate, I used to spin my pens and pencils when I was young and they used to fly out of my hand onto the floor. Fortunately this pencil didn't break. I don't spin pencils anymore :)

It's not broken. You can full disassemble by the grip just like that. You have to twist and pull out the grip with the body in that way.

The one he has is not good. The measure of the plastic barrel and the metal grip are not correct; the plastic from the body should enter the grip under pressure and stay there! (That is why the plastic has some longitidinal "rails" so it can force the way in and stay there) It is too loose! Some glue or a little piece of scotch tape(as i did) will fix it. Also the spring on the lead is so strong it is not doing anything at all. It requires some Superman force to activat it!! It does not protect any lead! Too bad the company did not fix this issue, that is around for some years now! I am assuming that the diferent parts are produced in diferent places and assembled in one other, and no one seems to care about it!! I am happy that I managed to get my Vario the way I wanted!

Just got my Vario 0.3mm today, from ebay; came broke in the box!! The grip was allready separated from the body even before i touch it! I made some changes in the pencil and i liked the final result. First i put a little piece of tape on the plastic body, (not a full turn, just 3 or 4mm wide) enough to make the grip and the plastic body stick together under some pressure. No need to glue it. Then i removed the clip, and finaly added a rubber ring(from a 8mm cabble gland) on top of the lead hardness indicator (because i am a low gripper). The result was perfect! To prevent the pencil from rolling i inserted a small plastic cabble tie on top (where the clip stud before) - i have them in almost all my pencils, (except those that hava a small clip that doesnt interfere with my hand). I can make a video if anyone is interested.

bummer :/ It just looks so amazing though lol, maybe an O-ring could hold it in place while still being able to use it functionally with the hard/soft feature. I would try to wrap a small rubber band a fews times around the little notch that connects the two pieces and then slide the metal part over the rubber band to see if it works before trying to find a O-ring that fits it.

About the hard and soft thing, I don’t own one but I’ve seen people say that if switched to hard it will have a no break feature where when pressure is applied it will spring inward (so for heavy handed such as drawing) and the soft won’t have that feature (turned off ig)

I loved this pencil for a long time, but the grip corroded, loosing it's silver shen and leaving a really unpleasant coppery rough texture. (That much I used it). I actually used the soft/hard feature. In soft mode it would prevent my 0.3 lead from breaking, and in hard mode it would avoid any slack and it would be really precise. But now I kind of love/hate it, because of the corrosion issue. It's like the almost perfect mechanical pencil for me, but it's not very durable in my opinion.

Just because the grip changed color you talk like the pencil is unusable, wtf? All of these metal grips without a coating like black Rotrings have, will change color with time because of the oil and sweat from your hand

I am sure it is a defective pencil. I had used one of them for two years without any single problem. And one day i have lost it! So i bought a second one just two weeks ago and today, my new pencil did the same thing as in the video! Thats why i ended up googling "tk fine vario defect". I will certainly ask for refund.

Hey, thanks for commenting and sharing your experiences with this pencil. That's really unfortunate that you lost a working Faber-Castell Tk-Fine Vario L to then having to replace it with a defective one. I have been thinking about buying another one, but after hearing your story I'm not entirely sure if I will.
