F18 RC Jet Crash David Searles 12-06-2008 DVD

Ғылым және технология

Saturday 12-06-2008 David Searles Testing His New Jet. No problem his Jet only suffered a small amount of damage on this rough landing. This Aircraft has 3 Fuel Tanks so it can stay up longer than others. David Searles is still learning the flying characteristics of this beautiful RC Model... Nice Job keep up the prime time entertainment David. Looks like this Jet needs to land at high speeds!

glad you brought it down in one piece - I think we can safely call this a (highly) successful flight - cuts, scrapes and minor bruising - notwithstanding! Really monstrous pull up on the second to last touch n' go. Hair-standingly good stuff!

CG is everything! CG with full fuel, gear up, flaps up is one thing. CG with low fuel, gear down, flaps down is another. Wing tip weight from one tip to another is important also.

Listen. At 2:28, you can hear a jet engine shutting off, then another after the crash. The cause of the crash was that the engine failed because of 0% of fuel and thus causing the plane to tilt over and lose height. The force of impact when it hit the ground caused it to break a wheel and (maybe) damaged a wing or so. I suggest a few days repair with glue, clamps, and spare parts and screws(that is if its built with any. Good luck! :)

Oh man, I didn't notice that until I read your post. That's insane! I would never take off with a servo freaking out like that. Did the jet seem underpowered to you, maybe too heavy for the amount of thrust it had. It looks like it's barely above a stall most of the time. He actually had it on the ground there at one point. I wonder if it was a short runway and he felt he had to bring it in slow to keep it from overshooting.

Notice the descripton of the video. Carrying 3 tanks, more than most jets I've seen. More weight, higher wing loading (especially those small F-18 wings) probably makes that a bear to fly. Pilot did a nice job, IMHO, but it got away from him. Tough to be a critic, since several comments here suggest you've never been on the sticks of ANY plane, much less an RC jet.

Assuming that you DO NOT fly... but the smaller wing surfaces provide less lift. Hence the need for a high speed turbine to provide enough thrust for flight. by that same logic, they take more speed to provide enough lift to land than a standard plane with larger wing surfaces. As he stated in the video, he needed more speed... just couldn't find the median. Could be some tweaks of the setup but first flights are for learning... all in all not a bad flight.

I know its very different to a turbine but I 've got an edf F-18 that displays similar characteristics. Smooth landings need a bit of throttle. Glide landings need to be done steeply to maintain speed with a fairly sharp roundout. Very nice jet though! I'm saving my spare change to step up to one of these.

with a jet of this size and weight i would make damn sure my elevators were rock solid.thats why it was rolling all over the place on approch, and at my field guys practically fly there jets to the floor with amazing controll and at high speed no flaring visable,i guess it helps to have a long wide landing strip.

Before taking out precious expensive model to the flying field, it is perhaps a good idea to have a practice session on a R/c flight simulator, especially the landings. True, simulation will never be 100% real, but it should give us a rough feeling and highlight certain aspects we should pay more attention to, e.g. if a nice slow approach proves to be difficult, then we are ready to opt for a higher airspeed but slower vertical descent rate. That could make a difference between a joyful maiden flight and a "bruised" one.

  • @imarocktscientst
    @imarocktscientst15 жыл бұрын

Thin airfoils do not have very good stall characteristics (i.e. they happen abruptly and at lower angles of attack). Besides landing faster, the easiest thing to do that might help is to ensure you have a turbulent boundary layer. This keeps it attached to the wing longer and postpones stall. Cutting some thick tape lengthwise with pinking shears and sticking it to the wing just behind the leading edge radius, jagged side forward, can help this (cheap vortex generator).

  • @Eiooeek

The issue seemed not relating to the size of the jet he used to perform. But it seemed relating to his flying experience. A bigger plane is easier for handling than a smaller one as general speaking. The reason for that is, the smaller one, which faces less drag, is faster and more responsive than a bigger one.

I see to many people fly jets like prop planes, nose down. They also fly to fast on final then they get into ground effect then they flare and the plane balloons. Flying a jet you have to set an attitude and adjust descent rate with power, but carry power all the way to landing.

Ouch, a little tip stall action going on there. I notice that you don't have a dogtooth on your wings like the full-scale F-18 does, which probably would have prevented this crash. Still, I have to agree with the comment below mine here, just a few cuts and scrapes, certainly nothing that can't be fixed up. Beautiful model.

I have the Foam 64-mm EDF from STARMAX, which is a lot smaller and lighter, and it always flew like a dream. A good bit of glide with power-out, but a rapidly falling sink-rate with falling airspeed. Looks like it sufferd a tip-stall; either get the flaps down, or raise airspeed to avoid this. Peas on Earth.

@Ispintechno1 Actually a full size jet like this flies better than a typical foamy EDF style jet. It's larger and more scale, so control surfaces are realistic and correctly proportioned, with flaps, full articulating rear horizontal stabs, etc etc Power-to-weigh is also great than 1:1 (which is actually unrealistic compared to the real F-18 which doesn't have 1:1).
