Thanks Mike, the recording was done by a friend in Holland, it really is crystal clear. The plane had a problem shortly after taking off, but decided to continue to the UK

Spent 4.5 years working in the F-15 Hydraulic shop on the 53rd TFS (Tactical Fighter Squadron) flightline @ Bitburg AB, Germany as a Ssgt. The left utility hydraulic pump went bad causing the IFE (in-flight-emergency). Pilot would have then pulled the emergency landing gear handle which uses compressed air from a pneumatic accumulator that unlocks the gear, with gravity and wind shear lowering and locking the gear safely in place for landing. The pilot absolutely nailed it with catching the cable. Now the Hydraulic shop will spend hours replacing the left utility hydraulic pump and doing an engine run test to make sure the new pump checks out ok. This is the filthiest hydraulic job on the F-15 with the mechanic always walking away with his uniform soaked in hydraulic fluid from pulling the broken hydraulic pump.

​@@coningsbylive Usually done within one, 8-hour shift if everything goes well....Towing the jet to a hangar, lowering underneath panels, replacing the inoperable Hyd pump then bleeding the Hyd system with a piece of test equipment called a Hydraulic MULE, towing the jet out from the hangar, perform an engine run for an operational check to ensure the new pump works and lastly put the panels back on. In the states if hangar space was tight the pump could be replaced on the flightline. But in Germany each jet had its own individual hangar - a steel/concrete bomb resistant Tab-Vee with a 50-Ton sliding front door - where jets were tucked into after their last flight of the day. But again in Germany, starting the engine's could be performed inside each individual Tab-Vee as they had a rear concrete jet exhaust door.

@@henrylosada9525 Yeah, If the AMAD went out with it then both the Util hyd pump and PC1 or PC2 hyd pump had to be pulled also. And don't forget the emergency generator being pulled also in order to pull out the AMAD manifold... Great 'fun' days indeed, especially with a hangover when on a TDY, and then hoping you had all the necessary spare parts on location... I also still miss my AF flightline years. Had 17-TDY's throughout all of Europe -- including 2, six week TDY's @ Red-Flag, Las Vegas -- during my 4.5 years @ Bitburg AB, Germany.

I worked in production management at McDonnell-Douglas when F-15's were a brand new design. I've seen a thousand landings over the years, but never saw an emergency tail-hook catch. Most of us who worked on or around them took great pride in their performance.

I worked the flightline on F-15's @ Bitburg,Germany back in the mid-late 80's in the Hydraulic shop and during my four years there our 53rd squadron alone experienced about 18-20 emergency landings requiring a tail-hook landing.

Exactly Gary, I think most if not all modern Jets have hooks, though they are not strenghed like the carrier jets. I remember once we was allowed to walk under a Tornado F3 and saw its skinny hook. This was the first time i ever saw a Emergency landing

Former USAF crash-rescue crew chief at RAF Upper Heyford, ‘73-75. This was interesting watching the engine approach and setup on the aircraft. We changed and set many a cable and barrier there. Experienced many in-light and other emergencies (notably hot brakes on F-104s) though I don’t recall any cable-arrested landings. Anyway this was excellent coverage of this landing and I appreciate your coverage. Brings memories back to life.

@@coningsbylive no, F-111s. Edit: the 111s were there when I arrived. F-4s visited from Lakenheath frequently. One even crashed on final a couple of miles from the east end of the runway. The 104s were usually Luftwaffe.

Didn't a f111 crash on the runway at Upeer Heyford, think it cause a bit of a stir. I can't remember and I got no idea what year that happened..

Camp Hansen, Okinawa 1985 - 1986. F-15's (and many other planes) flew over every day on their approach to Kadena Air Base.

i imagine, i bet you saw some interesting things at Greenham common, esp with the cruise missiles based there. We went there for the RIAT, i think i remember the last show they did there, lots of anti cruise missiles protesters outside the base.

Did you have Jeep J20 fire trucks at Greenham Common? I bought one back in the mid 90's which was rumoured to have served there. Recently sold it due to health issues.

I wonder if pilots get some sort of patch when they catch the wire.

For a moment I thought you and I had caught the same emergency landing. Same jet, different day. I had it come in with an emergency at the beginning of September but it didn't hit the cable. You were in a fantastic position to get the sparks! Poor anniversary jet.

That’s perfectly normal For the grab RAF GRABS, called a RHAG runway horizontal aircraft grab, have their cable supported off the ground along some of the cable by round hard plastic discs. The middle section down the centre of the runway has NO discs. Obviously looking at the USAF procedures from this video they do it “carrier style” as in cable flat on the floor. RAF bases also have a spring up catch net that if they miss the RHAG they can take as a failsafe the net Good video From what I also remember from my time in; we always used to I think approach from the rear! Missiles and guns only fire forwards!! Watch the crash wagons approach--- front on only!!!🤣🇬🇧🇺🇸👏👏👏

Emergency Crews were so slow to get to the Jet, if there had been a fire would not be a good endgame, and yes I flew in the Navy! That jet should have been moved within 10 minutes of closing down an active runway, we all know the Air Force takes 10 people to make a decision!

All fighters Jets are fitted with Hooks, like Carrier planes. But they are not as strong for carrier landings. So in case there is a emergency, like brake failure or unable to slow the plane correctly. Then can lower the hook and perform a emergency landing. They will raise the cable at certain points for such emergency. With the RAF they will have 1 cable raised at the end of the runway, and if they are aware of such a emergency going to happen, will also raise the cable at the start of the runway so the pilot can take either. The hook is a skinny little thing, not like Hornets or Tomcats where the hook was pretty solid. Hope this answers the question and there is no such thing as a silly question here. :)

Forgive me I might be talking out of my backside but I thought maybe fighter craft had tail hooks and others did not I was not aware that the f-15 was employed by the Navy or even came equipped with a tail hook was this a special feature for some reason granted if it's top secret I would understand but I just thought that was kind of odd

All modern day US fighters have tail-hooks. But not the US Air Forces A-10. Guess it's because it is technically identified as an Attack aircraft.. Funny though, I spent years in the Air Force working both F-15's and A-10's ( and also the F-111) and never thought to ask why the A-10 doesn't have a tail-hook.

..sure landed LONG on that touchdown. Nice, squared-away landing for sure but just curious as to why he had to stretch it out so far down the runway..? Maybe I missed something..

@@coningsbylive Actually the F-15 does have an emergency brake back-up system using compressed hydraulics inside the JFS (Jet Fuel Starter) accumulator's in the event of utility hydraulic pump failures... I worked in an F-15 Hydraulic shop and did quite a few leaking JFS accumulator repairs when I worked this jet and it's a soaking hydraulic oil bitch of a job.. The JFS systems primary job though is to start the engines. That's why no external ground equipment is needed to start F-15 engines.. The pilot simply pulls the JFS handle inside the cockpit and the engine howling begins the start-up process. It's one hell of a loud bad-ass sound during start-up and never gets old hearing it.. When using the JFS accumulators as an emergency brake back-up system there is no anti-skid available and is really a last chance opportunity if no runway cable system is available. For instance if the pilot did an emergency landing at a commercial/private airport. We also relied on this emergency brake back-up system every time when towing the F-15... While towing there is always a jet mechanic in the cockpit in the event the tow bar breaks off whereby the cockpit mechanic could pull the emergency brake handle then apply the brake's to prevent the jet from rolling away. Especially important to have when towing on a slope to prevent the jet from pushing the tow-tug down hill. At our air base in Germany we had a lot of slope's on our taxi ramps.

I didn't know at first how those guys kept walking but never got to the ship, then I finally realized it was rolling slowly. The way the camera is looking at it you can't see it moving. Maybe I just need new glasses!

Funny how when the USAF declares an emergency, they spell it out clearly for the controllers. We know from the beginning it's a hydraulic failure. Nasty business. But when the Blue Angels were declaring an emergency they weren't so succinct, instead said "we have a hide failure". That controller didn't know what a hide failure was and was confused. We now know it was a "Hyd failure" or HYDRAULIC, which would have been helpful in communicating it the first time.

The airplane had a emergency landing, the shower of sparks was the hook catching the cable. If you watch the jet as it comes in, you can make out the hook

Looked to me like he had #1 shut down prior to landing. There must have been more issues besides just hydraulics. 🤔

RAF owns 0 F-15's, only Eurofighters in front line service. F-35 in RN. This was a USAF machine. All US jets have a tail hook. There are even arrestors cables at some American civilian airports that have Reserve stations for emergency purposes.

They nest have followed certain procedures regarding engines shutdown etc. My scanner wasn't was not working, they did take there time clearing it

Engine keep radio's akacomms up. Also might be able to taxi still. Also have to pin the gears and dearm the jet too.... if there was a fire, yes, he be out asap.

Did the first cable snap because multiple cables are for set for different weights of aircraft, like on a carrier , so they laid a few cables just to be sure , looks fantastic to watch , but i don't think there was anything wrong with the cable , it was working beyond its operating weight .

Unlike on an aircraft carrier, the arrestor system at fighter bases is a single cable. Supported off the ground by those black rubber discs. It's stretched out across the runway around the 1000-foot mark on each side of the field. The aircraft will land a little short and drag the hook into the cable.

Typically loss of Hydraulics might result in no brakes thus the need for the Barrier. Also possible unsafe gear down and locked? He perhaps missed the Approach end Barrier. With no brakes and miss both cables the pilot will eject more than likely vs going off the runway at high speed.

There is an emergency backup system incase all 3 cables fail. He pull the handle and applies brakes until system is depleted. Then there sand or brakeaway cement the end of the runway.

With the amount of time fire rescue etc. took getting over there, it’s very fortunate there was no immediate emergency … If I gear had collapsed and there was a fire they would’ve been roasted alive.

Hi John, yes they have them setup for emergency, especially if the pilots think the brakes will not work. At RAF Coningsby they are at the start of the runway, and on one of the streams they switched ends and you can see them dismantling and setup at the other end. I have not seen them that it before, so was shaking when i saw the hook down as it came in.

They are designed into the airframe. They are not strengthened like carrier jets. I once managed to walk around the Tornado F3, and the hook on it looked really thin. They might be once use and replace design.

@Phillip Banes As a former eagle keeper, let me fill in. The hook is gravity released into the locked position. It's raised with hydraulics. You can raise it off the ground by hand but you still need hydro to put it away.

All military airfields have arresting wires in case a plane has no brakes. One at each end of the runway. The wire is normally in a groove below the surface of the runway and is raised when the pilots asks for it. Some civilian airports also have arresting wires if they host military aircraft such as national guard units.

@@NealB123 ...Indeed...!! known in Air Force terminology as the BAK-12 arresting system...very much along the lines of an arresting system as used on aircraft carriers...ALL military airfields do have them...our Air Guard unit had an A-7D with hydraulic "issues" catch the cable many years ago...what a sight...!! that sucker stopped almost immediately.....

What sort of damage would a landing like that do to the plane we must be talking serious money

Hi Andrew, imagine the aircraft would require a full inspection, to ensure there is no structural damage etc, but i am not 100% sure. I am doing a live stream on Tuesday, so will keep a eye out for this jet. It is the anniversary of the USAF jet

There is a copper skid plate... that's the sparks. But you just do a bolts check at the end of the tail hook and where it connects to the aircraft. Sometime it does slap up upper frame. We had it hit the engine before. But that what it is suppose to do. Sparks are good. Makes good contact. If the backup system fails, The Jet looses the main brakes system. Even though there is a back up incase all 3 cables fail.

@@andrewbird1205 I worked them for 15 year's!! Moved to the C-5s then retired!! Have had plenty of emergencys. Plus we use the tail hook for Normal engine runs when we have to do a full power run. Ahhh I miss my old job. 🇺🇸🤟

How do you keep calling these aircrafts what they aren't? A F-15 looks nothing like a F-35. Reminder: The F-35 is a stealth aircraft. It has is a single engine.

Man, not going to live that one down lol, I was caught up in the moment. I got confused as no F15s had taken off fro Lakenheath. I know my planes, it was the moment thing

argh, i now understand, thank you for sharing. I think original the UK hosted the US Airforce to use UK bases as part of the UK repaying the debt from WWII, you guys had lots of airbases here, especially in the 80s - from a cruise missile base, A10s, F111 and even the SR71 blackbird. These closed after the cold war and left Mildenhall and Lakenheath as active airfields. You guys also use RAF Fairford for bomber deployment as and when needed. There is a few other installation use by the US. Personally i love the US Airforce and seeing your planes here. We used to love the airshows hosted at the bases, but these stopped in the early 90s. We love you guys and it will be really sad if the US closes these remaining airbases.

@@coningsbylive I live in Orange County California. Growing up there there were two marine corps air stations in the county. Been there since the war. They closed in the 90’s. Probably over seas

How long to retrieve the aircraft? Looks like the whole of USAF on the runway for a picnic! Do any of these people have a clue what they are doing? Runway should have been blocked no more than 5 minutes! Pathetic! Ex RAF - the professionals!

With a $50m jet that may be armed and having been arrested by cable, you’d want to be careful about causing any more damage or mistreating any armaments. It’s not like Mildenhall and Lakenheath are 100’s of miles apart as alternates.

As an American it's embarrassing really. They appear totally uninterested or just flat lazy. I sure hope the base commander is shown this video. I suspect he would be less than pleased.

And you somehow know all the circumstances of this situation magically? No you dont, there was a need to do initial documentation and photographs in the event of significant damage to the aircraft. There is also a need to safe several systems.
