F150 Overdrive Switch Not Working? Easy Fix

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

So if your Ford with a column shifter has the overdrive switch at the end that has stopped working, then this will help you.
Here is the 3M tape I showed: amzn.to/2ZqnWPR
This applies to F150, F250, F350, Econoline, and likely more such as the Crown Vic. Basically what happens is the wire gets chafed at the base of the shifter and it creates a short circuit and blows the 5A fuse.
In this video I show you how to access the wiring and repair it using special automotive tape. In this case I show the procedure on my 2003 F150 but it applies to many other years such as 2002, 2001, 2000, 1999, 1998, 1997, etc.

Thanks for the helpful video, on my 2002 F-150 the wire was actually broken, creating an open circuit so I had to solder everything back together and seal it in heat shrink. On my truck the OD control wires ran through a clip on the shifter boot support which created a sharp bend that caused the break.

OD switch and end cover bezel is available at local parts store, do not have to replace shift lever assembly. just remove cover on end of lever ,flip switch out with small screwdriver or ice pick. do need to check for frayed wiring where it exits shift lever at steering column.

I'm not sure if I have the frayed wire problem, but finally I decided to tackle this (it's been broken a long time) and started with the fuse to see if it was blown... there was NO FUSE there! I don't know if I pulled it years ago for something else or how the heck it went missing, but without your video I doubt I would have even thought to check. Thank you! And if it does stop working and the fuse is blown, I'll know what needs to be done :-) Update: My dad had removed the fuse. The truck sat at his house for a while while I was out of state and the problem happened originally to him. He put a new fuse, it blew again so he removed it. Knowing this I figured I better just do this repair (even though I had added a fuse back in and it was working fine). Sure enough there was a bare spot on the wire just like yours! Really great video, thanks! Only comment is I think you don't need to remove that whole bottom panel. Just tip the steering wheel up and you can get those three screws out no problem, then the top cover comes off and you have access to the bad wire.

I used your video AGAIN to fix this problem. I used electrical tape around a bit of plastic straw (was hoping for more protection with that), and the shifter action worked the electrical tape loose. Round 2 with duct tape the long way. Your video is now several years old. Did that 3M tape hold up? I might buy some for the next time if/when the duct tape fails.

Apparently, Fuse 29 also controls the key fob programming...I could not get the truck to enter programming mode to set a new key fob. Finally traced it to that fuse, which was blown. Replaced it. Immediately blew. And, finally found this video. Thank you.

Ok, I must have a short on my truck. I have been putting it off for about a month now, light comes on but it really doesn't activate the transmission into a lower gear. I just move the handle around and it goes off. It is so hot here where I live, probably 105 right now in the shade and even hotter in the truck. May have to get up really really early to do this. It doesn't look like it would take a long time to do, apparently it looks like a common problem with these trucks. Great video, Thank you. I will get back with you after I get it fixed.

Very helpful video, thank you! Last weekend I decided to find out why my "OD-OFF" light no longer worked on my '96 F150. I narrowed it down to a wiring issue because the light would come on/off at various shift lever positions. You only have to remove the lower then upper "clamshells" around the steering column (on my vehicle anyway). So while the light was illuminated, I jiggled the wires and found where the problem area most likely was. There was no abrasion in the wire insulation heat-shrink, just a "weak" point in the wire bundle. As I was carefully cutting away the heat-shrink, all 3 of the wires just pulled apart. My only option was to solder all 3 wires back together. Shift lever is very easy to remove at this point (un-clip the wire harness connector, remove the pin holding the lever to the shift rod), so it was a relatively easy soldering job, as I was able to bring it in to the house and work at a table. I used heat-shrink on each of the 3 wires, and a larger heat-shrink around the entire bundle, and also a piece of vinyl tubing (slit lengthwise) to go around the wire bundle (I used small zip-ties around the tubing).

I just checked my fuse in my 2000 Ranger. It is blown so next step is your procedure. By any chance does the same fuse have any affect on the transmission dropping into passing gear when the pedal is depressed? I've combed the internet and youtube and there is absolutely nothing online about a Ranger not able to drop into passing gear. Again, thanks for your video.

Hello everyone. Replacing the fuse without making a repair only re energizes the circuit. If the wire insulation is damaged or broken showing bare wire then it will short out again almost immediately, drawing too much current and popping the new fuse you put in. If you have a blown fuse, you replace it and it blows again, this shows you have an active issue in that circuit that needs repair.

So my automatic lamps or headlights stopped working too and found out it’s a fuse and or a relay, I replaced them few times. They only work for few days or weeks and stop working again on the AUTOMATIC POSITION. I read in a Ford forum there is a module in the back seat and a connection or connector gets very hot and it melts over the time and that causes the fuse and the relay to blown, so in your video it’s shows your overdrive wire is going bad and it’s causing the fuse to go bad, the same fuse that controls that automatic lamps.. You think that should be the problem with my truck too.?
