blimey this take me back to my first ever Grand Prix as a 17 year old (I live about 20 mins from Brands) . I still think how lucky I was to see GP racing through what I consider to be it's golden years 👍

I was there. The cosworths were so loud compared to the turbo cars. Hurt my ears when they passed by. Almost walked straight into Murray Walker, James Hunt and Niki Lauda all together walking towards me. Outside the paddock, all three just walking through the crowd nobody bothering them. I was awestruck by that.

Barry, this footage captures perfectly the raw, explosive power of the turbocharged engines of the time. Heard through a Bose system, the audio is intoxicating.

I'm a geezer Yank who saw Rindt win his first GP at Watkins Glen 5 October 1969. (Took a nice pic of Tex Hopkins mid-leap dropping the chequered flag.) How I'd have loved seeing F1 at Brands. Circulating alone, somewhat "casually" as here, the engines' brute power really comes through; the cars are more visceral, uninsulated by the race's procession. Also helps that you're right beside the track! Great footage.

The aspirated cars sound so much better...this is thew last year they were competitive, but despite the crazy HP of the turbos I always thought they sounded bad, 1989 was so awesome when they made a full comeback.

I was there that weekend, an 8yo, my first and only Grand Prix. I still have the entry ticket : £3. I remember there was a saloon-car race for members of parliament (...), and the GP drivers did a parade lap in vintage cars. I would've been within spitting distance of you on the Saturday during qualifying, watching from track side as the cars took Paddock and then up past us to the entry for Druids.

This is the drivers list in order of appearance. 1) Elio De Angelis (Lotus Renault), 2) Michele Alboreto (Tyrrell Ford Cosworth), 3) Nelson Piquet (Brabham BMW), 4) Alboreto again, 5) Eddie Cheever on number 15 Prost's car maybe his spare car (Renault), 6) Piquet and Alboreto, 7) This is a hard one. Completely white car. I strongly suspect judging by the helmet that this is Marc Surer with his Arrows Ford Cosworth without any ads painted. 8) Patrick Tambay (Ferrari), 9) Piquet again, 10) Tambay, 11) Alboreto, 12) This is a tricky one. At a first sight it seems to be the Williams Ford Cosworth numer 2 of Jacques Laffite. But judging by the helmet it doesn't seem to be the regular complete black helmet of the frenchman. And considering that this is Jonathan Palmer's debut race (there were 3 Williams on this race) I suspect this is Palmer driving Lafitte's spare car for this session. This is probably Thursday or Friday morning session. 13) Jean-Pierre Jarier (Ligier Ford Cosworth), 14) Alain Prost (Renault), 15) Cheever (seems he was on the same car Prost was driving before and it is the car number 15 maybe Prost's spare car and this is also the car number 15 on the appearance believe it or not !), 16) White car. Impossible to say. Followed by Alboreto. 17) Tambay, 18) Jarier, 19) Keke Rosberg (Williams Ford Cosworth) followed by Prost, 20) Cheever again using Prost's spare car I suspect. Amazingly you can see the red number 15 but when the car is taking the corner you can see on the other side of the car the blue number 16 !! So that Renault had two different numbers on it !!! This is on 2:40 of this footage. 21) Laffite 22) Rosberg 23) Tambay 24) Laffite 25) Rosberg 26) Andrea De Cesaris (Alfa Romeo) 27) Rosberg 28) Cheever 29) De Angelis 30) Jarier 31) Rosberg 32) De Angelis 33) Bruno Giacomelli (Toleman Hart) 34) Danny Sullivan (Tyrrell Ford Cosworth) 35) An Arrows followed by John Watson (McLaren TAG Porsche) 36) Rene Arnoux (Ferrari) followed by Prost 37) Nigel Mansell (Lotus Renault) 38) Rosberg 39) Manfred Winkelhock (ATS BMW) 40) Cheever 41) Jarier 42) Roberto Guerrero (Theodore Ford Cosworth) 43) Niki Lauda (McLaren TAG Porsche) 44) Jonathan Palmer (Williams Ford Cosworth number 42) 45) Raul Boesel (Ligier Ford Cosworth) 46) De Cesaris 47) Riccardo Patrese (Brabham BMW) 48) Cheever followed by Sullivan 49) Tambay followed by Teo Fabi's younger brother Corrado Fabi (Osella Alfa Romeo) 50) Guerrero 51) De Cesaris 52) Thierry Boutsen (Arrows Ford Cosworth) followed by Patrese 53) Winkelhock 54) Cheever on his number 16 Renault 55) Corrado Fabi 56) Guerrero 57) Arnoux 58) De Angelis followed by Piercarlo Ghinzani (Osella Alfa Romeo), Patrese and Boutsen 59) Cheever followed by Watson 60) Palmer and Winkelhock passes by on his right 61) Piquet 62) Arnoux 63) Fabi 64) Giacomelli 65) Winkelhock 66) Piquet 67) Palmer 68) Jarier 69) An Arrows passes by followed by a McLaren and the white car number 17 from North Irishman Kenny Acheson (RAM March Ford Cosworth) while Sullivan passes by on his left. 70) Prost surpassing the car number 40 of Stefan Johansson (Spirit Honda) 71) Boutsen Then boxes footage starts 72) Watson 73) Alboreto 74) Boesel entering the pits 75) Watson 76) Laffite 77) Laffite again 78) Sullivan 79) Boesel 80) Sullivan 81) Fabi followed by Arnoux both entering the pits 82) Johansson 83) Sullivan 84) Boesel 85) Derek Warwick (Toleman Hart) folowed by Guerrero 86) Laffite followed by Johansson 87) Sullivan 88) Winkelhock 89) Tambay 90) Sullivan followed by Piquet 91) A McLaren and a few seconds before Tambay passes by 92) Laffite 93) Sullivan 94) Piquet 95) Prost followed by Winkelhock 96) Marc Surer (Arrows Ford Cosworth) 97) Laffite 98) A Williams followed by Piquet 99) Alboreto 100) Cheever 101) Boutsen 102) Surer slowing down and Sullivan passes by on his left 103) Guerrero 104) Cheever 105) Guerrero and ahead of him was Johansson 106) Alboreto 107) Mansell 108) Prost 109) Watson 110) Jarier followed by PatreseUnfortnately there is no sights from the following drivers: Warwick and Ghinzani (barely shown) and Mauro Baldi (Alfa Romeo number 23)
