even with the 2017 car being faster, you can see how the 2008 car just is way less understeery in all the corners. really highlights how bad the modern f1 cars in slow speed corners when they have no downforce, due to their weight and size

Yeah i noticed that too. The older cars are just more nimble due to the weight and size as you said so the 2008 McLaren gained time in the first chicane back

Well you have to put it a bit different. They are indeed more understeery and less nimble nowadays but it LOOKS slower but the cars are faster on every part of the track, also slow corners

@Hallison Michel everyone would enjoy smaller cars, more nimble and ofc better for racing, being able to go side by side. unfortunately the weight issue cant really be resolved, with the weight of the new power units and the halo, the weight added by those cant really be reduced

@Hallison Michel i mean, even as recently as 2016 we've seen drivers fighting the cars at times, sliding and catching oversteer, obv nowhere near as impressive or as daring as the pre 2010's, but still. with the 2017 cars and beyond theres just too much traction and downforce. yeah a fast lap will still be impressive due to little mistakes, and the utter speed of it, but never as good as watching a lap from 2007 or another time around then, watching drivers fighting oversteer and slides... the closest we've gotten to that was leclercs singapore pole lap, still fun to watch but nowhere near as the old pole laps

Bridgestone's rain tyres were so much better, it's honestly ridiculous. No wonder they can hardly race in wet weather these days.

Driving in the wet is all about reading the road surface. No two laps in the wet will ever be exactly the same because where the grip is will be constantly changing.

Maybe experience also. You notice 2017 he is staying away from the kerbs as he learnt over the years how slippery they can be and slow you down in the wet.

Its the same in Rotax Max karting. The ideal line is full with rubber and gets oily in the wet. When you pay attention while karting in the wet you can see small bubbles and this typical oil coloring. So you have to avoid breaking and accelerating on the line and even worse: white lines at the edge of the track or start grid positions close to a corner.

The traction in the Mercedes looks better than the McLaren despite the McLaren being the one that has traction control? Are the engine maps so sophisticated nowadays that the car has a kind of traction control built into the mappings or something similar?

A C in ‘08 TC had already been banned. My guess to why the Mercury seems to have better traction might be due to the fact it has more aerodynamic grip. The tires are also better and the merc also has a hybrid unit which has more torque

These new cars are soo large and heavier, FIA moved in wrong direction with rules, those old cars were soo agile and looked dramatic cuz they would hustle then using steering, there's no charisma in current cars

No traction control in 2008. You can clearly see some power oversteer out of the corners. You wouldn't get that with TC, it would cut the power.
