F-stop Tilopa Field Review

Фильм және анимация

Whether you’re climbing a mountain or trekking across open prairie, how your camera equipment is transported during the adventure shouldn’t be a painful experience or a logistical nightmare. The F-stop Tilopa provides a versatile, adaptable and surprisingly comfortable solution for those hauling a decent amount of gear over long distances by foot. #Tilopa #FstopGear #CameraBag

    agree, it's really informative, and wish all others would do this. Thanks for thinking of us!, But it's sometimes hard to see. and when you pause the video, the red KZread time progress bar thingy hides the info. Maybe if I could suggest, have a dark strip of background to assist with seeing the info? Great video, first one I've seen from you, and now I'm a subscriber!

    Thanks for the kind feedback Martin. I've now got my eye on the F-stop Sukha - I find myself having to ditch camera gear in favour of overnight necessities too often and the extra 20 litres offered in the Sukha are appealing right now. What sort of lens and bodies are you hauling in the Ajna?

    Neil, great review! I appreciated the well-balanced review, and found your suggestions for improvements helpful. (I might add that the ICU attachment method could be streamlined a bit.) I purchased the Sukha almost a year ago, and have found it to be my favorite backpack ever. I can pack for extreme weather and a few days out while being well-prepared photographically as well. If I had to do it over again, I might very well order the Shinn for the long haul and either the Ajna (not as robust, but easily meets most carry-on requirements) or the Tilopa for my carry-on bag. I, too, by the way, appreciated your providing the shooting information you provided, but also just appreciated your artistic approach to presenting this review. A job very, very well done, Neil!

    Neil: Happy to see you getting so many positive comments on your review as I too find your presentations, artful, articulate and quick to the point. As for the bag.......I find it hard to find a more attractive bag and one of my top three considerations for my next bag however it falls short on providing a suitable location to secure a water bottle like the Shimoda 40. Additionally, I would really prefer a removable Waist band like the Atlas Athlete and last but not least the back panel should be more breathable as you pointed out ......a significant issue IMO. Keep up the great work~!

    Many thanks @Mark Darnell 👍 Greatly appreciate the feedback and kind words 😃 I agree that it would be helpful having a dedicated means of carrying a water bottle on the outside of the pack, but I have found it easy to attach a 1L Nalgene bottle on the side using the two quick-release side compression straps. As for the waist belt, when not using it, I find it incredibly useful as a third compression strap for my center-mounted tripod. I've begun undertaking more multi-day outings and using large production cameras - and I'm close to picking up the bigger Shinn... close 😆

    Terrific review Neil. Also, very well shot and produced. For almost a year I've tried a lot of different packs and systems to better support my photography during multi-day outings in rough country. • @neilfisher

    Thanks @lmergenti 👍 The F-stop Tilopa is still an outstanding bag, even after all these years of abuse. However, if I were to buy a camera backpack once more - I'd go for the larger Sukha. The difference between 50 litres and 70 litres is significant and the issue I encounter most with the Tipola is not having enough space for non-camera equipment when using the Pro Large ICU. The Sukha would provide ample space for non-camera gear when using the Pro Large ICU and is also compatible with the terrific Pro XL ICU. This all depends on what sort of work you're doing and what type of camera system you're using - hope this helps. 😃😃😃

    I’ve had my Tilopa for 6 month now and have used it on several photo trips and I love it. It fits perfectly in the overhead of 737 and can fit a lot of gear in it. My only problem with F-stop (not necessarily this bag) is a lack of a tripod pouch to help strapping it to the bag. Other from that it’s awesome

  • @neilfisher

    @neilfisher

    4 жыл бұрын

    @Elan A personally I think F-stop made the correct decision in not adding a tripod pouch. A pouch is only as useful as the tripod it can carry and from my experience the tripods I end up using a massive and certainly wouldn't fit in any pouch I've ever seen. This might actually be a case of F-stop knowing their customer - the majority of wildlife cinematographers I know will strap their tripod to their bag's exterior or just carry over their shoulder. Just my two cents though 😃

    At 3:40 into the video you show a D ring attachment point on the strap. On freezing that frame it looks like this attachment point is frayed, or perhaps ripped and repaired. @Dr. M you're correct in what you spotted in this video. This bag does have a bit of fraying where the D ring attaches to the shoulder strap. Thanks for this review, I’m just now finding it… a little late to the party. I’ve always loved the look and apparent durability of f-stop bags. I’m giving serious thought to giving f-stop another shot and actually attempting to purchase one. My first try was in 2016. I did everything under the sun to get my hands on one, but just no success. I finally started doing in depth online research about f-stop and found out the company was a train wreck. The owner was (reportedly) partying and squandering all their money. This was further evidenced by the low-to-no stock on backpacks anywhere you looked. They had fired many people, and treated those remaining, like dirt. Customer service was non-existent, and I could find absolutely NOTHING online but very bad reports about f-stop, as a company… not that the bags were bad. So, clearly a little apprehension. When I saw this new upsurge from f-stop I thought “oh, wow, they must be under new ownership” or something like that. However, I called just a few days ago and asked that very question and was told the same, original owner was still there. That’s not very confidence inspiring. Nevertheless, I see now the bags are being sold through Amazon, so I think it might be safe to order one. At least if they are built well, and you can actually get your hands on one, dealing with f-stop may not be entirely necessary, if you’re lucky. Thanks again for your very nice review.

    @Tony Stark what you've said about the company and owner is very similar to what I've heard second hand or through a bit of internet digging. Really is a shame that such a terrific product is manufactured and sold by a rather disorganized company :( It may just come down to dumb luck of when a specific back is in stock when you happen to want to buy one.

    @@neilfisher Yeah, thanks Neil. That's very true, because when I first started uncovering the malfeasance and buffoonery of the owner, and more importantly, what it was doing to f-stop... I thought the same exact thing: "what a sad, sad thing that such a great photo backpack is being destroyed by this guy." I tell you what, if the folks at ThinkTankPhoto were running f-stop, it would be the only name ANYONE ever thought of when you mentioned photo backpacks. One last thing, it's interesting that most of the people I have talked to that really love f-stop and remark how great they are... seem to know nothing about this owner and what went on in the company. I say good for them, they threaded the needle, got lucky and got a great piece of gear.

    If you're actually hiking, this is a joke. The extra weight from a ICU is just nuts. That 1lb could easily be dried food for 1 to 2 days. These are NOT hiking photography packs. They're Urban backpacks. If you're climbing a mountain. You can wrap the lens in a layer of your clothes in a Dyneema bag. Same with camera body. Nobody truly hiking would ever carry one of these.

    Admittedly, "hiking" in an environment with zero elevation change and overnight temperatures of 19 degrees celsuis is not the same as climbing a mountain. If I'm hiking for multiple days in a less predictable climate and require more non-related camera gear, I will use a smaller ICU or as you mentioned - use a dedicated 70L multiday pack and simply wrap the necessary pieces of kit in clothing. Consider that many of the best wildlife photographers spend many weeks in the wilderness with only what they're capable of carrying.
