The 2nd movement of the symphony no. 20 (adagio cantibile) is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard. I wish I had written that. It could be used as background music for many occasions. I wonder how many people in this world have ever had the opportunity to hear this. Haydn outdid himself with this one. Mozart couldn't have done any better!!

John Zech I get your point, but Mozart and Haydn are not in competition with each other - and actually never were in their own lifetimes; the more you listen to the two composers, the more you will understand how completely different they are. Additionally, this symphony pre-dates even Haydn’s appointment at Eszterhaza in 1761; it was written between 1758 and 1760 so that would mean Mozart at the time being less than 4 years old. That said, you’re right; this quintessential Haydnesque movement is lovely, set in the middle of a very fine early symphony.

Haydn is the father of the symphony. His music is amazing in harmony, grace and elegance. Viva Haydn a true genius of music that gives us unforgettable moments of pleasure and haunting music. Bravissimo

LDC

Where's the timpani? Poorly recorded. Very thin sounding. No balls! Dorati is way better done and better recorded.
