Barbarians, or more precisely southern barbarians (nanbanjin/南蛮人), was how the Japanese described the first Europeans, Portuguese and Spaniards, that arrived in the country in the mid-16th century. Later on Westerners in general were still called that way well past the re-opening of the Japanese ports, through gunboat diplomacy, to initially the Americans in 1854. This house, built in the colonial style in 1919, didn’t seem to have been occupied by any barbarian being used as a sort of museum until 1995. There are apparently plans for its demolition but as May 2023 the building remains pretty much as seen in this video.
