Some facts about this movie: 1) Esmeralda is the second Disney character who prays (the first being Snow White). 2) It is the first Disney movie where the word CURSE is used. 3) It is implied that gargoyles are Quasimodo's imaginary friends, but in the sequel there is another character able to see them come alive

Frollo and his song Hellfire are considered the greatest Disney villain and villain song. The choir are actually singing in Latin so during Hellfire when Frollo is singing “It’s not my fault” the robed guys are saying the “Through my fault. Through my most grievous fault”. Tom Hulce who plays Quasimodo was Amadeus in the film of the same name. Demi Moore is Esmerelda, Kevin Kline is Phebus. This was turned into in a off broadway musical and was supposed to have gone to Broadway, but Disney didn’t want to pay the choir costs so Frozen went to Broadway instead. During the opening sequence when Frollo looks around at all of the Statues of Notre Dame and it goes to the Virgin Mary’s eyes when the lightning flashes you see her eyes open. During the Out There sequence you can see Belle reading a book, a man with the carpet from Aladdin, and two men carrying Pumbaa. Everyone agrees the Gargoyles and their song is the weakest part of the film. The people who directed this film (Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise) directed Beauty and the Beast and would go on to direct Atlantis the Lost Empire. In the original book everyone died- Quasimodo, Frollo, Phebus, and Esmerelda and Frollo was a priest in the original book. The song writers were Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz.

A nice touch during the song Hellfire is that those robed figures are chanting a Latin phrase that translates to "My fault. My most grievous fault." It's part of the mass, called "Confiteor" or "I confess", which the whole point of is to confess to your sins as a flawed human being and pray for mercy and guidance. It highlights how Frollo's delusion of righteousness and virtue flies completely contrary to the actual points and teachings he tries to hide behind that he continues to defend and deny in the face of those own teachings and lessons being turned against him and it being shouted in his face that he is the one in the wrong. Even his first lines in the song show this off. "Of my virtue I am justly proud" "I'm so much better than the common crowd" That is the textbook definition of pride and vanity as a sin since virtue is the bare minimum a person should do and is not a monumental thing to take such pride and glory in, and he fully displays that vanity while trying to call himself virtuous and ask for salvation without admitting it's all his own fault he's on this path or considering changing his ways to save himself even when he knows what he's doing will send him on the path to damnation.

"All of us rooting for one person to get her"...? She's not a piece of furniture, you know...? No one needs to "get" her or "win" her as if she was some sort of prize or inanimate object. Also, the fact that Quasi was nice to Esmeralda and even saved her doesn't mean she has to develop romantic feelings for him. She was nice to everyone and helped others too, and she didn't seem to be expecting sex in return. I know a tone of men in my life that have been so nice and gentle to me, who have helped me out on so many occasions. Should they all be my boyfriends now? I guess I should have to have 200 husbands or something? The whole concept of 'friendzone' as this terrible thing that some guys talk about is very hurtful and unrealistic I think. Lucky guy the one who'd get a friend as loyal, smart, fun and brave as Esmeralda. :)

If you are disappointed Quasimodo doesn't end up with Esmeralda, remember she wasn't his original goal but freedom and being loved in general was and he ended up having it, furthermore he idolized her which, even if it is better than what Frollo felt for her, wasn't treating her like a human either (he called her an angel and perfect) and was mostly motivated emotion-wise because she had been kind, whereas Pheobus treated her like an equal human being. So in the end Quasimodo understands they are better for each other

Frollo (I wish): Quasimodo, I can't lie to you. You're not exactly easy on the eyes. Neither am I, but i know when to leave a party before it gets ugly. The first time you step out of this bell tower shouldn't be today, at festival time. I know it looks like a lot of fun from up here, but trust me, it gets old, fast. The whole city gets to do whatever they please, without any consequences. They get drunk, they get stupid, they get violent. I don't want to see you get hurt. Maybe tomorrow, we can open your horizons a bit, but not today, son. Please, not today.

If you think this movie is dark, you should read the book. I'm really surprised Disney took on this film adaptation. Fun Fact: For the scene where Judge Frollo sings "Hellfire" and sees Esmeralda dancing in the fire before him, the MPAA insisted that the Disney animators make Esmeralda's clothing more well-defined, as she seemed nude. The song itself is considered one of the darkest songs written for a Disney film, and was nearly cut from the film.

In the scene where they threw fruit at him, in the book and most other live action films, and the off Broadway musical, Quasimodo was actually flogged. So it was even worse.

Killing a mother and baby trying to claim sanctuary in a Church might be the most blasphemous thing you can do. Especially while claiming you are doing it for God. But what is so disturbing is how realistic Frollo is. Hellfire gives a lot of insight as to how people like that think in the real world. Finally, the guy playing Frollo has a very good singing voice. Hellfire is my favourite Disney song, even though I despise Frollo

OK, I tried to watch this but it is such a travesty and insult to the original story that I only made it 8 minutes. I know Disney "softens up" some harsh edges in these stories but this is unwatchable for me.

@@latenightswithsammy My favorite is the 1939 version but the 1922 (silent) version is also a gem. Both are much darker and realistic and well worth your time to watch/review.
