The military budget of China is around 5 times larger than that of Japan, 2. China has comprehensive nuclear detterence: air, land and submarine based nuclear missiles.

I just watched a Charlie Rose interview with Lee Kuan Yew, where he mentioned about the strength and solidarity of the Japanese people. In that he confirmed after his 40 years of political career that the Japanese, as a group are the toughest people in Asia. Compared to their neighbors, which are the Confucianists (Chinese, Koreans, Vietnamese). I'm just wondering how so? What is in the fabric of their society that allows for that strength? I assume it is related to the Zen tradition. Which originally comes from China. So I have even more questions lol. Have you any insight about this?

My father was a former Self-Defense Forces member. When I was little, he often took me to the history museum of the former Empire of Japan and the kamikaze war dead memorial hall. The most shocking ones were the Atomic Bomb Dome in Hiroshima and the Atomic Bomb Museum in Nagasaki. I grew up vowing that I should never go to war again, and I am 18 years old this year. I will do my best to study for Japan.
