I live 4 hours from Oshkosh, Wisconsin and I go to EAA in Oshkosh every year. I have seen first hand the F-22, and F-35 in action. When the F-35 and F-22 did their demonstrations those engines rattle your brain in your skull. You wont see them coming but you'll definitely know that it was America by the ridiculously loud sound of pure freedom that just went roaring over your head.

They can't even make J-20 as stealthy as F-35. Not to mention J-31/35 hasn't even begun production. More likely by the time J-35s come into service F-35s will have already received their upgrades with Block IV. So F-35s will still maintain a superior edge.

The J20 was designed primary as a long range air superiority fighter to mainly shoot down support assets like tankers and AWAC, it does not even have a canon. That is why it is a big and long delta winged fighter. And stealth performance is only great on the frontal profile. Side note, It is not great at maneuvering today as it was intended to have thrust vectoring engines ie WS15. And a 2 seater version is also being built as a drone commander. The F35 is a multirole fighter with a bulbous body to carry larger munitions with a fairly short range. The F22 also has a short range. The J35 is a multirole carrier fighter that that is expected to operate off all Chinese carriers. Several prototypes are already seen training on ground based carrier simulations. So mass production isn't far away.

@@olderchin1558 F-35s including the B variant has more range than any 4th gen platform without external tanks. F-35A/C has 750 - 800 nmi combat radius, and this is before the engine core upgrades. While F-22 certainly has more range than F-35. F-35A has Typhoon's T/W ratio and Gripen's wing loading, while F-35C has Rafale's T/W ratio and Typhoon's wing loading. So F-35s are just as fast and nimble as any European fighter jet and can certainly dogfight especially the C variant. Not to mention F-35A has an internal cannon. So both in BVR and in a dogfight, F-35s much more F-22 definitely have an upperhand.

@@johnsilver9338 I don't expect the J35 to be better than the F35 in most aspects except maybe climb rate, ceiling, supercruise and max speed. It doesn't look like it will even have a cannon. It will not likely out range the F35A or C but certainly the B. BTW, the J20 has a combat range of 1100nm. But the J35 is made by a different manufacturer from the J20 so production volume will be good. This manufacturer makes the Flanker J11, 15 and 16. Shenyang has traditionally been a Soviet collaborator and Chengdu traditionally a US partner. China has a lot of unemployed engineers, so it should have no problem ramping up production.

The FC31 design has the canopy open from the front and the initial J35 also had the same design. The new canopy opening from the back came only in the latest iteration, which also had a completely different fuselage design. The wings are of a different design. The FC31, J31, J35 are essentially different planes. The J35 has gone through several design iteration. So you can stop making dumb references to the J35 being a copy of the F35.

the benefit using more than one engine is that it is more responsive with the early kicks when you crank the throttle. you know that best, you flown F15. also like what you said, reason why it is best for carrier launch where the jet could spool power up with brakes on(or locked to catapult) and then release. twin engine better at that. and also potentially, although each engine could have less power, total power output combined could be even more than a single engine jets. even if only a slight. about the J31 itself,(i hope thats the final name, J35 would sound like a"knock off" also, there is already a "J35" in the past, the draken by SAAB) , the J31 is technically i think the F35 with twin engine. the wing size/ surface load looks similar to F35 instead of F22. but it has slightly longer body, maybe so they can carry more internal fuel loads and made for higher topspeed. but the wing size characteristic, shows it would behave more like the F16. which has less aero drag at high AOA. (F16 is the original idea behind F35 design.) but something interesting is the positioning of the main wings leading edges that sits further back somewhat, compared to F22 and F35. this must have something to do with weight distribution. OR, they are planning for F22 style of 2D thrust vectoring but with some fix to the original. F22 bad habit is, when it uses its thrust vectoring to make sharp pitch it LOSES MOMENTUM BY A LOT. and must guzzle more fuels to gain back that momentum. (F22 never tested in real world dogfight with real bogeys, only mock up fights, but part of the reason of why they are planning to ground that jet is THE FUEL CONSUMPTION. which the supercruise capability didnt compensate much)

I never thought about that... Being a GA kid... Fewer engines is less to go wrong. But with just a quick think.. 2 engines have much lower rotational inertia, they'll spool faster, especially since rotational inertia is based on the square of the radius. Well plus in GA, we don't usually have people slugging chunks of various things at us, Or operate over terrain I'd not wanna be over

@@cheetor5923 fewer engines is MORE to go wrong. you will only have one chance. twin engine jets benefits the most jet engines dont produce rotational inertia. thats a myth. what do you mean by rotational inertia? you mean torque drift like what you see in propeller planes? like i said, jet engines DONT HAVE THAT. if its about turning radius, planes with the most narrowest turning radius have twin engines. what affects the plane's turning radius is the length of the fuselage and the position of the leading edges of the main loading wings. thats the PIVOT in turning/pitching. thats why STRAKES has serious effects on turning radius. not the count of how many engines. also "radius" is circle. not square.

Acting training is where there is a goal and the Chinese win in glorious fashion while being watched by officers in bleachers. The soldiers are just stuntmen and actors doing a stage performance. If it's like that with the J-20 pilots, the Gripen pilots will most likely win. They will fly low with jammers on and the J-20 pilots will be totally confused.

Nevertheless, it is disconcerting how often/easily Chinese espionage seems to be able to acquire this type of technology from U.S. and our European allies. While I lack your expertise, it seems the same thing has happened when you look at a Eurofighter 2000 Typhoon and a Chengdu J-10....eerily similar just looking at the aircraft's lines.

It wouldn’t be a stretch of the imagination to postulate that given the objective and the available engineering & technology, that the results to achieve the design goals might result in a similar appearing airframe. Stealing blueprints and test data will confirm hypothesis while accelerating the development process. Questions of propulsion suitability in reliability, availability and performance become academic in fledgling aerodynamic applications. We’re seeing similar design concepts emerge from various countries determined to establish a presence in the stealth arena; South Korea and Turkey for examples. China has proven to be elusive in details for their systems. This hedging can be interpreted in several ways; are they ahead or behind? Open Source Intel is replete with as much speculation based on dissimilar technology as it is with intentional disinformation. As for an engagement, technology is a poor substitute for technique. It will all reduce down to mission planning. Somewhere out there in the dark sky is a hungry Raptor, sending a datalink to it’s Eagle missile trucks to have the first bite, and then… it’s all over for anything left over. And our adversaries know this, and to that end this will be the conundrum that they must solve should they be foolish enough to pursue an encounter in anger.

The chinese aesa radar like the j-20, j16, j-15 and the j-35 have a detection range 300-350kms for the same 1m2 to use the pl-15, pl-17 and pl-20/pl-21 long range missile without an awacs. Like the russian su-57 have 400kms detection range radar and the su-35s have 350kms to fire the r-37 long range missile............ and this spec change everything! If they detect you first you re dead in real life. And an awacs cant help you because of the enemy long range. missile

The NGAD 6th, is insane from what has been divulged. It completely redefines the meaning of “air superiority”. There is a simulation of 18 NGADs vs 96 fighters, performed on DCS by Grim Reapers. US 18 NGADs (6 human Pilots, 12 AI drones, 2 AWACS) 1 squadron Rus 32-Su57, 32-MiG 31, 32-Su35 End result was 2NGADs lost. Vs 98 Rus aircraft lost Insanity! No, the Air Force wanted to retire 32 of the first run harder to upgrade F 22's. They NEVER wanted to retire the "entire" fleet. There are MAJOR upgrades going on form 2021 through 2029 for the Raptor, (all but 32). NGAD test bed activity in fact, is going to the F 22 NOT the F 35....

They haven't retired the whole fleet. Only the earliest production block, the rest are geing upgraded as we speak.

Your facts about the stealth abilities of SU-57, J-35 and SU-75 are quite off base. Especially since the production model of J-35 has not even been seen yet.

J-31? TF are you smoking? China can't even field a fully operational J-20 let alone an airborne tanker. Both of their Aircraft carriers have limited range and the one that is home built can't even float properly let alone have functional catapult systems. in other words China can't push it's military power past Taiwan, Vietnam, and Japan. Hell the Japanese Air Force has more stealth fighters than China has J-20s let alone a fictional J-31

Yes, they can keep an entire fleet of 250 j20s and nearly 30 y20 tankers operational. They have the money, expertise, and know-how to run an Air Force.
