F-15 Eagle (all fighter variants) is 104--0 in dog fights. No other air superiority fighter comes close to this kill ratio in history. F-15s cleared the air over Israel, Bosnia and Iraq allowing F-16s, B-1s, B-52s , Warthogs, etc to focus on ground attack.

Initially the F-15 was the aerospace equivalent of a super car: sexy and supremely capable but so expensive even the US couldn’t afford as many as it wanted. Half a century later it’s matured into a pickup truck: a cheap, practical, hugely utilitarian workhorse that does heavy lifting in support of today’s “supercars”. The F-15’s record and 108 to 0 kill ratio are impressive, but the fact it justifies continued production fifty years on is ultimate testament to how right that initial design really was.

While I get the analogy, it still doesn't equate perfectly. Supercars have always been about pure top speed, and while the F15 will certainly be used as a missle truck. 9 times out of 10, it will also be the fastest thing in the sky while doing so.

Stealth is necessary when you don't have air superiority. But since vietnam, the US has always been able to obtain that in a matter of days. We had Air superiority in Iraq and Afghanistan for over 20 years, where stealth was usless and big waste of money. I'm not saying the US doesn't need stealth aircraft to defend itself against, or fight against, other nations with capable airforces or air defences, but when you have air superiority, a big, bad, more powerful, non-stealth aircraft rules the roost. Also, the US military has a growing list of missles that can land on target from 1000mi away, which is farther than the range of an F-35 without aerial refulling. A full Navy carrier strike group has enough missiles locked and loaded at any time to destroy a midsized countries air defences from 500 miles away.

They took off then went completely vertical and looped over to inverted thereby executing a 180 the hard way. vVry impressive then.

The F-15EX is meant to serve as a missile truck at stand-off ranges firing at targets designated by stealth aircraft inside the conflict zone. This was originally the purpose of "Beast Mode" on the F-35 but the Block 3 upgrades and beyond have made the F-35 a much scarier aircraft to come face to face with. Most people have no idea how good the F-35 is now that the digital training wheels have been removed. It has been stated that the only fighter in the US Air Force that can beat the F-35 in a dog fight in it's current build is the F-22. You also better be really good with guns... because when that electronic warfare suite is turned on, you aren't getting a lock to save your life. Meanwhile, he can lock you on his ass and shoot a delayed missile up yours.

The thing is the airframe of the f15 is basically perfect. It serves as an extremely capable bomber fighter and with certain combat loads air superiority fighter. It may not be the stealthiest aircraft, or most maneuverable, but with modern radars being able to pick up even the smallest RCS nowadays it's more beneficial to be packing 20 Aim-9's than 4 in a stealth package. And with most dogfights happening beyond visual range skill is more necessary than maneuverability. That joined with the EXTREMELY advanced radars put into the new EX's, it just rules the skies.

I worked on the C/D model back in Desert Storm and will always love the Eagle...it's one of those quintessential planes that will be remembered along with the Mustang, Saber and Phantom for as long as there are aircraft. There has been a lot of flak about investing in an "old" 4th gen airframe, but to be honest, the only thing the EX shares with it's older siblings is it's appearance, the guts are all modern. They say it will be outclassed by 5th gen, and that is probably true, but potential enemy air forces rely on updated 4th fighters anyway...the Su-35 is just a Su-27+. We're still a decades away from our enemies having all 5th gen air forces...besides, stealth will eventually be countered by enemy SAM and airborne radars anyway, if it hasn't already. Personally I think the EX would be great at SEAD in both the former F-4G and EF-111 roles.

They already did one its the f-15 stol/mtd. But if you are referring to combat, well, they kinda discarded the idea since USAF's combat style was more into BVR and stealth. They would rather blast tangos from afar and avoid dogfights as much as they can.

In the early 90's, I was on 'Lay-over' in St. Louis, near a window overlooking the main runways. I heard an UnGodly Roar, went to the window, and watched as 2 F-15-C's streaked down the runway, to about 3/5ths of it's length, retract gear while at maybe 2 FT. above, and, then , Pull STRAIGHT UP on Full Burn, and, just dis-appear, UP!! It was like watch a Space Shuttle lift-off, minus the Smoke/Flames. So, Unreally-Quick!, must've been at 40K/FT per Min., or Faster[?] !! Blew my mind. I 'get it' that new planes have electronic gizmoes, that old fighters get 'war weary', but, really, the F-15 is outstanding in the one realm Butch O-Hare said was most vital; Climb Rate (although, myself, I 'Like' high roll-rate, and vectored thrust as 'nifty' flight moves to have, just-in-case), and the "old" B/C/D/E Eagles should get refits if the airframes are not too stressed by usage. Consider that the F-16's of the VT National Guard had a few that Exceeded their 'flight-hours', but were still 'in use' over Afganistan at the age of some 48 years, um, well... We seem to make planes that can Last, if we Design them Right to begin with. Which, also, makes me wonder 'IF' the XF-23 could be updated, then trialed again, as the Raptor's production molds have been scrapped? The F-15 EX, might look like 'stop-gap', and an F-22 would likely take-it-out at 6 to 1 kill ration, but, bottom-line, you need 'planes', many planes, to Fight with, not 'a few planes'.

Btw, the retired Saab J-37 Viggen could 'almost' do that, and the 'never-in-production' YF-8-U Super Crusader (flying "clean", as NASA was it's User), was noted for an extremely high climb-rate. @@oliverclosehoff8036

The F15EX, F16V, and F18 Super Hornet Block III. All are "upgrades" to our existing inventory, but are still based on designs from the 70's and 80's. China and Russia are outpacing us in upgrading their air forces. They've introduced numerous updated fighter designs over the last 20 years. In the meantime, we've dumped a crap ton of time and money into the F35 and have moved away from the F22. A clean-sheet Gen 4.5 fighter, as General Brown suggested, should be developed and mass produced to replace the bulk of our aging fighters. Modernizing our air force should be a priority.

F15s are tried and true and only needed upgrades to stand up to our "rivals" which have way less of what the 22 and 35 already are. why replace 200+ already built aircraft to go through more growing pains for 20 years trying another new platform. All Russia has done is upgrade the su-27, and they don’t field nearly as many planes as the us Air Force does. The SU-57 has less than 10 operational (I think) and even then I would take the f-22 over it. China has the j-20 and pretty much the same upgraded su-27s russia has. Missile tech is definitely in chinas favor but the number of planes the Air Force and navy have kinda negates that edge.

“Cost competitive?” Who do they think they’re fooling? The EX cost over $11M more to acquire, but approximately $9,000 per flight hour less to operate. We’ve all seen cost per flight hour go down during the life of a new program, along with upgrades that over time extend the life of the individual planes in the new program. So, acquisition costs for the F35 are significantly lower for the F35, and the operating costs for the F35 will go down over time, as well as the lifespan of the planes will go up over time, just as with all other new fighter programs. The F35 is more cost effective than the F15EX.
