Any idiot knows that the beamwidth is defined by the -3db (half) power point! I had someone ask me in RTU radar academics once "how can the bar spacing in Auto-Guns mode be 3.5 degrees, if the beamwidth is only 2.5 degrees? Won't you miss some targets? Answer: the APG-63/70 was so overwhelmingly powerful that you weren't going to miss anybody inside 10 miles (the range limit for Auto-Guns mode), even if they were outside the half-power "beamwidth".

I can imagine what people's faces must have looked like when you said that.

Sad fact is all that practice wasn't even needed. A German student in a C172 with nothing more than Rand McNally and a sandwich put his plane down on Red Square. As recent events have shown, it wasn't a fluke. $900 drones have made it 2/3rds of the way there undetected and hit strategic bomber bases. Probably the same bases these F-15s were preparing for.
