Yeah this was dope. I'd even suggest making it a standard so that we can get a full grasp of the capabilities of the aircraft being discussed.

My favorite has to be the pivot wing, fuselage missiles and guns, open nose, and overall just mean lines of the "Last Gunfighter", the F-8 Crusader.

Is there anything sexier than a Tomcat merging at full-sweep? I don't think so. I don't think so.

Love seeing you explain the tactics as you win a close dogfight by the seat of your pants. But the Mr.Bean meme and stopping that Phoenix at the exact frame just the moment before impact is simply masterful work GS! Really enjoyed, and kudos also to Shotgun!

The F-110 powered Tomcat was truly an impressive machine I would love to see it against the SU-35.

I really enjoy the BVR videos and all the tactics and know how it requires. The dogfight in modern jets just feels like 2 tank crews driving up to eachother, getting out of the tank and shooting at eachother with pistols. :S

I had the same thought. More patience. Ploughing forward waiting for burn though was ill advised. Go hot, notch, go hot notch. All the time you’d be dragging missiles energy and maybe dropping off the radar completely trashing the shot. Also, why no altitude change?

I wonder how the Tomcat would perform with more powerful engines and 3-D thrust vectoring… No idea how variable geometry wings would combine with thrust vectoring though.

You’re describing the Super Tomcat 21 project. If Boeing lobbying didn’t kill Grumman’s chances, we’d have the worlds most incredible 4th gen+ fighter defending the navy right now.

@@BigBossIvan nah.. you're being overly optimistic. It's not Boeing lobbying that killed. Sure, Tomcat is a very capable fighter but everybody knows that it has a massive radar cross section compared to more modern fighters. In modern battlefields against advanced air defenses it would be a sitting duck.

@@xaber_ I can see the RCS engineers weeping at having to deal with variable geometry. The other option being to only sweep the wing to certain pre-defined angles, but that kind of defeats the point of a swing wing

this has become one of my favorite most consistent channels for entertainment such a great job GS! been watching for years now. i would love to see some f35 bvr fights to see how capable it is, i think that the mod underperforms but would love to see it do what it was meant for instead of the dog fights, if you read this thanks man!

I am a retired US Navy F-14 A/B/ D Aviation Electrician. I would always ask my pilots in every Squadron I was in. VF-24, VF-211, VX-4, VX-5, NWTS. I asked about this fight against the Mig -29 Fulcrum. A great video brother.

Love seeing the 29, could you maybe do BVR but only with Fox1 missiles, I think it would be an interesting twist

This is the fight that the original Top Gun was meant to have. I wish they would've been able to actually get Mig 29's instead of repainted F5's. Nice content though as always, like this format, and that skin on the Mig 29 is sweet!

I love the idea of adding some BVR to the standard dogfighting videos! It's kind of similar to how the BVR videos can sometimes also end up in a merge... The fact that you deliberately try to fly (and use tactics which are) as realistic as possible, instead of simply exploiting ED's implementation of radar tracking and missile guidance to completely negate the Tomcat's standoff advantage, is not lost on me. Thank you for always striving to produce the best and most immersive videos that you can!

For your BVR segment, every time you turned a bit to avoid the missile or his radar, I kept thinking of Family Guy Star Wars episode when the Empire is chasing the Millennium Falcon. “That’s your manoeuvre, moving slightly to the right”. “He’s drifting lazily to the right, where did he go”. 😅😅. No offense bud, I love your channel, but every time I see you fly against a Tomcat, I hope you lose. That being said, that dogfight was pretty sweet. Should have been a best of three though, just to be sure.

Hahaha, I heard your opening remarks and you're absolutely right! The MiG 29 is one of the most beautiful modern dogfighters. Countered only by the F-16. But you're right about BVR, the Tomcat was built to be a long-range interceptor. Not sure what BVR weapons you'll allow, but the Phoenix can be fired (it's been a while) but I've heard rumors of almost 100 miles away. It was originally designed to destroy enemy bombers, but if fighter doesn't see it coming...boom 😀 Edit: Holy crap! Your friend is good, I don't how he missed in that pass either! But he was good, keep your speed and altitude against a Fulcrum, or you'll end up on the business end of a 30mm cannon 😆. Second fight: I'll have to look up the Phoenix missle again. I didn't know it could be that effective against fighters.

the Phoenix isn't un-maneuverable. Missile maneuverability depends on missile weight, where admittedly the Phoenix loses, missile wing area, which is massive for the Phoenix, and missile speed, which for the Phoenix is frankly ridiculous, _if you give it enough time to get up to speed_ A Phoenix fired from close in is going to be much more sluggish than a long-range one, simply because the latter has had more time to build energy and hence maneuverability.

Nice video. Dogfight and BVR. I would like to see tactic review into the same also!

Whoa.... A very early upload on a Saturday!!?? Amazing!! The Mig-29S is one of the better variants of the Fulcrum 4th Generation Fighter. Plus you can tell S from the standard Fulcrum due to its dorsal hump hence its nickname, the Fatback xD

@@guinnog2 I kno... however we've seen GS do some amazing things with, done more with less so to speak. Just like the concept of old fictional MIG-28 VS newer real MIG-29 both flying the Soviet/Russia colors of their time! Obviously this is a dogfight and again I believe GS could win in The MIG-28/F-5 against The MIG-29 ;)
