Love to see US pilots try to align INS and do some general test while soviet MiG-21 pilots just told to : "Comrade, click all switch in the cockpit and you're ready to scramble!!!"

Funny you should mention this, it's exactly what happened during one of the Cold War tournaments I participated in. A mass of Fishbeds out of Krasnodar (including four from our squadron, myself among them) took off, formed up and attacked the Blue base at Anapa. The Tomcats were still sitting on the ground aligning their INS. Needless to say we crushed them.

@@FireflyActual XD. That what I called "Blitzkrieg" as you strafed them up in Anapa XD. Ironically this is how VVS lost the opening stage of Barbarossa as the Luftwaffe strafed all VVS Ishak's in their airfield. To make it worst, the high ranking official prohibited any flight operation for the VVS, giving the Luftwaffe a free waffle. Yes this mig "click all switches" procedure is an absolute beast by itself. I always do those procedure to intercept any opposing aircraft, hit them (spamming all missile) and run away landed back to the airfield. Totally worth it lol

@@FireflyActual Actually I read an article about an interview of an Ukrainian ex-Su 27 pilot. In that interview, he said he once flew with the US F-15E crew. He shocked to the fact that the US do all day long 20 minutes startup checklist and aligned the INS. Unfortunately that F-15E somehow had a malfunction so the ground crew decided to abandonned that Eagle and moved to another Eagle. This Ukrainian pilot said that he had gone through another all day long shutdown checklist for the unairworthy Eagle yet another all day long startup checklist for the backup Eagle. At the end of the day, he finally took off with it. He suprised by the fact that in his Su-27 and MiG-29, they can be in the air within 5 minutes after they enter cockpit. Most of the former eastern bloc pilots claimed that their (Ukrainian) modified Su-27s are better in terms of scramble to take-off as this is a primary Soviet 80s doctrined where they were trained with. Edit : here the article www.airspacemag.com/military-aviation/fighter-jet-fights-both-sides-180975834/

@Hawker75 Here's an after-action report I posted to my squadron HQ. AAR: [27.7.19] (Red Alert 2) Sortie #1: Aircraft type: MiG-21bis, bort 545 Red Sortie #1 aircraft status (RTB, Ditched, Crashed, etc.): RTB Sortie #1 pilot status (ACDU, WIA, POW, KIA): ACDU Sortie #1 A2A victories: 1 Sortie #1 A2G victories: 0 Sortie #1 Synopsis: Took off from Krasnodar (runway 09) leading a pack of 6 MiGs (1 - Firefly, 2 - Vietkong, 3 - Britchot, 4 - Razwald, 5 - LazzySeal, 6 - Skyman), Razwald had a problem with his landing gear, detached with Britchot, both landed to repair, rearm and refuel. Pressed on as two elements, 1-2 and 5-6. Found ourselves over Anapa, got locked up, turned north, then south. Found an F/A-18 (all thanks to Variable's exceptional GCI work) who was attacking our tank approaching Anapa, engaged and shot it down. Separated from Skyman and LazzySeal, returned to base with low fuel, Vietkong landed on fumes. Rearmed, refuelled and readied for the next flight. Sortie #1 Lessons Learned: Always be prepared for emergencies (such as Razwald's landing gear problem). Practice large formation flying as much as possible. Have the mechanics pour me a shot of radar coolant before the flight to help with the stress (I was literally shaking afterwards, got a bit overwhelmed, could ask @Jonne for some tips). ------- Sortie #2: Aircraft type: MiG-21bis, bort 545 Red Sortie #1 aircraft status (RTB, Ditched, Crashed, etc.): RTB Sortie #1 pilot status (ACDU, WIA, POW, KIA): ACDU Sortie #1 A2A victories: 0 Sortie #1 A2G victories: 0 Sortie #2 Synopsis: Took off from Krasnodar (runway 27) with Vietkong (Skyman and LazzySeal went to another airfield). Having heard of Britchot's and Razwald's demise we headed west in full mil, got into a MASSIVE furball, found the tanks overrunning Anapa, completely lost my SA, then tracked an F-14 (who got splashed), was about to shoot down an F/A-18 when a MiG-29 swooped in and got the kill. Egressed out of the combat zone and headed back to Krasnodar. Sortie #2 Lessons Learned: Practice coordination with dispersed flight elements. Have the mechanics pour me two shots of vodka.

Thank you very much for making these quick start tutorials. It´s important for a newby and learner in a new aircraft type to really focus on the individual aircraft systems (in this case: the turbine starting - and NOTHING else. Cranking the engines injecting fuel switching on primary flight avionics powering hydraulics and up she goes). The DCS tutorials overwhelm with at least five times testing every single system in the cockpit, testing all fire systems, having all radio buttons switched to different positions, testing 150 more systems at least five times and so on... I don´t want it "arcady and simple" - the more ultra-realism the better! But it is important for a newbe to focus on every individual aircraft system one after another (and don´t get instructed 100 other realistic checklist procedures at the same time and being in need to control the complete cockpit and already have knowledge about full radio panels radar avionics flight computers and every other stuff..... when just wanting to learn how to spool up these two turbines :) One aircraft system after another, this is the perfect way to show tutorials. This is why KZread vids are so incredible helpful, instead of one hour long checklists focussing on one specific feature of the airplane. After being able to start and activate all avioncs focussing on learning all about the AWG9 AA radar. After that learning the Bombcat AG modus and the Lantirn and other features this flying cat has to offer.

Hi Cap! Thanks for the straight forward video! I love those short start ups. Just two things I would like to add: 1. That the Altimeter can now be uncaged by holding it up towards Stdby for a couple of seconds. The other thing is, that you should set the round counter (above the Display Panel) to 670 prior to start. Otherwise your gun in the HUD will show 0 Rounds when selected and you don't know how many are left.

Thank you for this great video serie! It helps a lot. I just have a suggestion as a DCS beginner : It would be nice if you could do a recap mission in order to conclude the serie. Something like setting up a mission in the editor using F14 waypoints, carrier, E3, Sam, tanker, etc, then fly that mission with a bombing run as the objective to illustrate A/G stuff, then come back to the carrier and encountering some air defense on the way to illustrate air to air combat. With air refuel in the middle and a Case I recovery at the end, it would show beginners like me a good start package to create our own mission using what we learn in your tutorials. Keep up the good work

We unpin the ejection seats before we get into the aircraft. We hand the pins to the plane captains who store them under the nose gear, there’s a box. We only arm the ejection seats after we are strapped in with three different belts. Leg restraints, lap belts and shoulder harness.

Shawdawg28 if you’re doing just regular free flight and instant missions, no I don’t believe there are random failures but I’m pretty sure in the mission editor, you can enable random failures for a chance of something going wrong and I also think you can set up specific failures yourself if you want to make an energy scenario or something like that and I’m sure when someone starts a server in multiplayer they can enable the random failures option as well, I’m still pretty new to DCS myself, only starting since the F-14 went into early access but I do remember seeing that option somewhere before

Usually you will have to ask Jester to align the INS. Arguably you should turn off the hydraulic pump before starting engines, then back on once both engines are at 70% and you should ask ATC for startup permission.
