Ezra Pound's Cantos - Canto I - Reading & Analysis

The beginning of an ongoing series dedicated to Ezra Pound's Cantos. In this video, I briefly introduce the Cantos as a whole; we then listen to Pound himself reading the opening poem of the book, and take a look at the historical context (Homer's Odyssey) of the contents, elucidating necessary information as we go through the Pound's poem line by line!

@@AnHonestDoubter thank you! Following video will be on Troubadour topic again (Cercamon + Marcabru), and then Canto II afterwards (if I don't decide to speak on a different poet for variety, will see).

@edmundpoetry I had not considered the great importance and implications of the first word being "And" until this analysis, thanks for this.

The video was both entertaining and informative. Excellent analysis. I get it that we are interested in the work not the man, but should you not grasp the nettle, and speak of the elephant in the room?

Glad you enjoyed! Re: speaking of the elephant in the room, I do not think this is necessary at this stage. As you yourself said, I am only interested in the work. Discussing, presenting, condemning, rationalizing (and so on) his personal life and views will only create an obstacle at the very beginning and cause some to shy away from the work unfairly on ideological grounds. Only the work should matter for the student.
