EZ30 Swapped Subaru Legacy | 6spd RWD!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We did it! From a daydream idea to reality. Howling H6 Ez30 engine, 6 speed rwd transmission from a Subaru BRZ swapped into a 1998 Legacy GT. Standard on the outside, anything but, on the inside. It's been a little under a year since breaking ground on this project, and now we have a unique, great sounding fun to drive car that didnt cost a whole lot of money. We couldn't be happier with it.

America really got the short end of the stick when it came to the H6. In Australia we got the gen 4 with the 3.0R Spec B trim, which had an EZ30 mk2, 6 speed manual, Bilstein suspension, etc. Fantastic car to drive and even came as a wagon.

I agree the 2nd gen legacy gt is the sweetest body style. I found that out in 2011 when i saw one in a junkyard and just had to sit in it. Told myself i'd own one eventually. Found one manual for cheaps *blown headgasket* changed it. Now i finally got one.

Ez36 motors go for 1.2 to 2k. So it's pretty cheap. The fact that it mounts to the trans and cross member means you dont have to spend 1k on a trans adapter, mount and drive shaft, nor another 800 to 1k on an engine mount kit. At this point its routing cooling lines, exhaust, and wiring up an aftermarket ECU. So maybe another 4k at most.

@@paydroguapp What do you mean how so? What do you want me to do, explain all of the steps required for both, so you can see that it's ten times as much work to swap an engine platform than it is to do a manual conversion? When you swap and engine you actually have to get the thing to run! So not only do you have to get it into an engine bay, which might not have been setup for it, AND get everything else in there as well (like the radiator), but you have to get all of the wiring to work, you have to get an ECU that can run it (and run it in that car), an ECU that isn't going to have immobilization problems, if you are using a stock ECU designed for the engine (which came with an auto) you still have to get the ECU to be OK operating the engine under load in what would be considered "neutral". Have to make sure you have proper fueling. Have to get new ECU you're using for your H6 to talk to all of the car's H4 stuff. Still have to make sure the engine bolts up to the trans in question. Just pulling and replacing an engine with the same engine is a pretty big task, to say nothing of putting an engine there that wasn't meant to be there. Compare that with going manual on a car that has the engine you like. You need to pull and replace the transmission. So the new trans needs to mount to the engine, so you might need an adapter plate, you might need a custom mount. Though, not likely in this case for either, as Subaru is pretty big on standardization. Then there is the question of the drive line out to the rear diff (the two transmissions are unlikely to be the same length). Worse case, assuming you can't cobble something together, you might need a custom drive line. (But honestly, you probably don't.) Then you need to install a three peddle kit, and you need to run and position your hydraulics. Not really a huge issue, maybe some very light fab work. Then depending on the car, you may need to install a resistor or something into the wiring harness to convince the ECU to run the engine in neutral. The simple reality is this: An engine is a very complicated piece of kit that relies on many systems and infrastructure to run, and you have to get all of that right for the engine to work. A manual transmission is a very simple bit of kit, thus there are far fewer factors that have to be accounted for.

@@bujin5455 considering they don’t make a manual transmission for the ez30 that I’m aware of and if they do have fun getting it. You’re still going to have to use all f4 stuff…. With that being said you’d obviously use everything h6 for the engine harness and mounts and radiator and bell housing is the same so no. A manual swap on an h6 car would 100% not be easier than to throw an h6 from a donor car into a manual f4 shell

  • @bujin5455

@@paydroguapp I've only done both multiple times (converted autos to manuals, and put engines in cars they didn't come with), yeah, I totally don't know what I'm talking about. What you're saying makes no sense. Make a manual for the ez30??? That has nothing to do with it. A manual is a VERY simple mechanism, rotational torque goes in one side, get's scaled up or down, then rotational torque goes out the back side, and there are some hydraulics to control the clutch. The MAJOR "unique" difficulties with doing a manual conversion will have to do with your drive line, as if the manual is a different length, there will be a different length to the rear diff. You also have to account for a shifter, and if the CAR didn't come with a manual, the body might not want to accommodate the shift linkage (some cutting may be required), and you might not have cute plastic bits for your shifter (so you might have to do some interior fabbing). Then there is the problem of getting the ECU to be OK with the manual, but you're going to have that same problem if you stick said engine into a car with a manual, so that's sixes. Next you have to setup your peddles, no big issue really. Talking about putting an H6 into an Impreza for instance (which I have done). First off, you can't run the H6 off of the Impreza ECU. Nor is it compatible with the Impreza's chassis harness. In my case, I ended up going with a Haltech Elite 2500 with a custom iWire harness, still difficult to get everything in the car to completely work. You try to stick your Outback ECU into an Impreza, that will be an uphill battle, one you might lose. That Outback ECU is not going to like your Impreza immobilization system, so you're going to have to swap all of that. It's very difficult to get an EZ30 to fit under the hood of an Impreza, mine required custom cooling routing to make happen, which resulted in aluminum welding. But please, by all means, you go do both (an engine swap and manual conversion) and get back with me regarding which was easier. Because I have done both, and engine swaps are ALWAYS harder than you think they'll be, always take more time than you think they will, and always cost more than you think they will, especially when you are changing platforms. Manual swaps are SO MUCH more straight forward, it's night and day.

I know this is old and probably not useful as the information I have is about 20 years old, but I had planned to convert my 1st gen Legacy wagon to RWD using a MkIV Supra transmission with a bellhousing converter plate being sold by someone I forget the name of. The transmission in the BRZ is rated for only about what the EZ30 puts out for power, so if you end up with transmission problems, it might be worth seeing if you can find out more about the Supra transmission adaptor. I'll also be surprised if the R160 held up this long, but that's an easier swap. I'm on my 4th Subaru (or "Subaru" in the case of the GR86) and only ever owned 2WD versions-they always drove much better than the AWDs when they were both being built to compare them to each other-they felt livelier, lighter, more nimble, quicker, with a more communicative chassis, and seemed to get the power to the wheels with far less loss (while that's obviously true, the difference in feel was remarkable jumping from FWD to AWD versions) while actually getting mileage that wasn't less than their contemporaries. Snow tires made up the difference in winter traction, though even with AS tires, they did pretty well. One of the big reasons I stopped buying Subarus for about 20 years was the AWD-only switch.

Hi! Are you still on those cheap coilovers ? Have you driven a good amount of miles to tell if they are good or not?

Yeah! I’ve been running the maxpeedingrods for a little over a year now and the only thing I’ve had to do is grease up the front pillow ball bearings and that’s about it. They’re stiff but still work pretty good.

@@TIRESIDE I currently have raceland coilovers that are meant for 2002-2007 wrx, they are 3 years old and about 40k but the top of them are rusted and want to replace them, the coilovers at the highest setting makes the car look really low that I can barely put a finger between the fenders and the tires and that's the highest setting, your car sets low but not like mine what setting are you in with yours? Can you raise it and lower your car more? I don't like going cheap but for my 99 subaru you really don't have too much of a selection and I'm getting bigger wheels so I want to know my options of 17s or 18s depending on the cars height cause of the fenders.

On my coilovers I’m at about midway on the height adjustment. I think I could raise a couple inches if I wanted to.
