Eye to Eye with a Sperm Whale

I own the copyright to this video. Please do not copy any portion of this footage without my prior written consent.
While studying the social behaviour of Sperm whales near the Azores, we ran into this fellow swimming about on his own. For a short time he seemed just as curious as I was, then he turned upside down (likely to adjust his bearing via echolocation -the loud clicking you hear) and righted himself again and continued on his way. Amazing experience.

It's true, money can't buy the raw feelings of standing next to a beautiful massive creature like this, but in a way, it kind of does, indirectly. For instance, you would need to buy or rent a boat to go out to the open ocean, as well as scuba equipment to get under the surface for an extended period of time to get near these animals. But no one can buy these feelings from you once you've experienced them, they're yours for life.

Just the same as wether you whisper or yell, whales are able to modulate the volume of their voices. What amazes me more is 1. How similar to the sound of ice cracking in the fiords is to their singing. 2 After having something like 60 million years more of using their frontal cortex, just how deep is the Whale Song? I wonder if they sing Gaia to sleep each year. Down deeper than light, deeper than anything we can conceive of. The pressure of the dark is real down there. Hunger for food and air joust for providence behind the sound of the frozen water, finally given a voice to the elemental mother, the present clicking while straining to catch that slightly different click come back. That last ventstack to the right of the working ones isn't made of magma but flesh. Flesh, somehow knowing that the jig was up separates and comes, like a bullet shot at the whale. Still it was no longer waring with air or food for this was fight, life.

I wonder if anyone has made a serious attempt to communicate w/ them using those clicking sounds? There is a woman marine biologist who has spent her life studying orcas- killer whales. She dreams all the time about swimming with them and communicating with them in orca. But she says that when she wakes up she cannot remember their language. She is somewhere on YT.
