Eye Crossing in Babies: Do They Outgrow It?

Were you told by your pediatrician or friend that your baby will outgrow their crossed eyes? Pediatric ophthalmologist, Dr. Rupa Wong, explains why this is more complicated than a yes/no answer and how to tell if your child needs to see an eye doctor. There is a lot of confusion over what is normal in a baby's visual development and what is not. When does eye crossing improve? When is esotropia worrisome? When should you be concerned if your baby or toddler is still crossing their eyes?
Covered in this video:
What is strabismus?
What is congenital esotropia?
What is delayed visual maturation?
When to take your child to the ophthalmologist for evaluation?
When is surgery necessary for eye crossing?

Hi Dr. Wong, My answer is partial, since I had the problem. Success depends on the person's motivation. I was taught how to "Control it". This by Playing Tennis, and other methods. I know parents are terrified when the see "eye wonder", in a child. I think a lot of the problem comes from some truly bad, "eye habits", some children conduct while reading. You have my sympathy, what ever approach you choose to use. Thanks for your excellent review!

Our 2 month-old baby brother have shown this congenital esotropia just today. It brought all of us to tears when it just doesn't stop. His eyes only go back to normal for just seconds and he's crossed eyed again. We keep him entertained or talk to him ALL THE TIME just to not keep it crossed (since it stops it). We also kept on closing his eyes expecting it to go normal when he opens it. We also massage his forehead cuz it seems effective. We can only meet a pediatrician tomorrow morning and we don't have any idea to stop seeing him that way other than making him sleep. I hope it doesn't progress to any of the complex treatments. It pains us not to see our little angel smiling.

@@DrRupaWong hello. An update about our baby brother's condition: his cranial ultrasound showed normal results. The pediatrician referred him again to another hospital to have a CT Scan with a better pediatrician he personally know. He said it was his first time seeing our baby's case at his very young age. He also wondered why our baby's skull is fully formed at only 2 months and 9 days old. At this point, my Father doesn't have any plans on having him for further tests. He's overthinking about the expenses it will cost cuz we know and were said that it's gonna be something serious ahead.

Hi dr. My son was diagnosed with mild CP at the age of 6 month. After taking his second shots I notice a day or 2 after his eyes keep moving back and forth then I took him to the hospital and that’s when they told me he has CP. he has seizures also infantile spasms that’s the of seizures. His eyes never came back straight from then it looks pretty lazy in the left one. I have been to the eye clinic all year around all they tell me is the nerves in the left eye is weak. I keep asking how can I help all they said is give him lots of greens. I’m very sad n don’t know what to do. I would love to get some advice n more info from you. I can send u pictures also. Having eye crossed at birth is natural. I have 3 children when they were a baby I always noticed their one eye sometimes go to its corner while the other is ok. Thanks God we have a book titled "Where there is no doctor" btw i live in the Philippines. What i did is i cover the good eye with my hand only lol, baby will resist but just do it .. i think I did it 2-3 times until it turns ok. All of them I did that and they have a beautiful symmetrical eyes. Thanks to that book.

Just found out that I only use 1 eye at a time to see and when that one eye gets tired, it automatically switches to the other and I know, no difference. Does this have a name?
