Extreme Wind & Recirculating Waterfall | Day 1 Auckland Gliding Championship

Ғылым және технология

Had an awesome first competition day at the Auckland Gliding Championship. The wind was so strong that we drove to Thames, where we could fly a task on the ridge.
Can you spot the recirculating waterfall?
Special thanks to Smeg NZ and Auckland Gliding Club for making this happen!

Awesome Stefan! I was also being thrown about in a Discus 2b yesterday but in Australia. Good to know they can take it. You get a sense of it when your hand flies up off your leg.

Now I’m hooked , I’ve subscribed, will be visiting NZ in the near future with the wife, we plan to take few rides in a glider, as a former airline pilot I appreciate the power of nature.

Steady 40 knots of wind up here on the Kaipara, we don't have those ridges however. What we do get is magnificent streets but strangely never any gliders. 'Gave up my membership at Lasham when I left the UK in 2007. Now rethinking this... great flying, as ever Sir.

Richtig beneidenswert.

  • @SteFly

The app is called XCSoar and only available for Android devices. And yes, I use a powerbank. You need to pick a good one e.g. from Anker which has no EMI issues.

@@SteFly Thanks for the quick response. So far I'm flying without a computer. I've got TopHat on a Kobo with GPS chip, and have XCSoar on an android phone, but my XCSoar layout does not look like yours. I see there are many many config options, it's almost overwhelming, but I have it setup with a 55km task defined. I've partnered now with another pilot and bought a Libelle 201 and preparing to be ready for cross-country training, so now is the time to learn how to use such a program.

gliders use rising air to gain altitude. In this video the glider uses wind blowing up caused by the mountains. I recommend watching this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/lGiN1NKmmMq0d9Y.html
