Extreme Redline Restorations: Hot Wheels 1968 Python Restore

In this video we will restore a 1968 reline python. Part of the "Sweet Sixteen", the original 16 cars that Hot Wheels put out. I will be showing off a much cheaper way to paint the Spectroflame finish using "over the counter" paints to save on $$$.

  • @ChristopherCobra

He typically does not. He seems to use screws after he taps the drilled holes. Technically the cars are not riveted as far as I can tell, but use peened pins. So I am kinda curious how you "restore" the rivets

This inspires me to get some old Hot Wheels and restore them. I used to have many Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars from the early 70s up into the 80s. Hot Wheels were my favorite but Matchbox had some neat ones in their own right. They did a lot of cars that Hot Wheels didn't really have, like old Ford Police cruisers and such. I have so many irons in the fire now that I don't know when I'll find the time to restore some but I'm gonna make time! Thanks for sharing

They say you can polish a terd and it's still.....They need to see this. Literally took a junk yard Hot Wheels and made a beautiful show piece. You do real nice work. I used to air brush model cars 1/24th scale. My air brush kit was stolen unfortunately. Spray paint just doesnt match the quality. Although air brushing can be tricky depending on the paint, coats, etc. I wish you'd do a video on airbrushing. I'm at the most an inexperienced novice. So any tips would help. Thanks and nice job. Love the videos.

Cool. I had a Python and a Silhouette when I was a kid. I can't remember the colour of the Python, but the Silhouette I had had a lustrous, pearlescent purple finish with tiny little flecks in the paint. Funny how modern paint technologies let you give old Hot Wheels cars a better finish than they would have had when they originally came from the factory. It's a little like the way digitization of old photographs makes them look newer, brighter and sharper than they really were.

This was my first Hot Wheels car. Got it in 1969 only ever got 2 of them when I was a kid the Python and a Spitting Image because I was getting bigger and I was getting into other things like bush walking and camping around the same time. These Red Line cars and Dragster high rise bikes that came out here around the same time were the first metallic painted things I remember other than cars in Hot Rod magazines. Still have the 2 Hot Wheels cars and some other Red Line cars I've found over the years. I keep them in an origin Hot Wheels case that looks like a mag wheel.

I smashed all mine up when I was younger, and I'm still getting them from garage and thrift sales for pennies, and smashing them up today. The fact that these cars have any value is thanks to people like me who liquidate a fair chunk of the production making the remaining ones rarer.
