Have split wood for years. Looks like a good log splitter. One thing you should mention is the "travel time" of the piston. Couldn't tell since the video speed was enhanced during splits. A slow travel increases the time for splitting.

Thanks for the video, it was very informative and I answered a lot of my questions.

Very good rundown of a log splitter. This one seems 100%. I like the small 'catches' on both sides of the rail to prevent larger pieces of wood from falling off, after initial split, in horizontal position. Overall, best I've seen.

Great review, I'm looking at this very unit for BIG maple rounds I have regularly off my land. Suggestion: Pull a wood trailer alongside the splitter and toss the finished wood into it and it will save you picking it all up again and loading it. Just come back for the trailer when it's loaded and you put away the splitter.. subscribed

I bought a 35 ton half beam yardmax splitter earlier this year and split about 5 to 6 cords of wood a 20-inch lengths so far so good. Just two little issues. The 4-way wedge sits a little on the lower side so you can only split smaller stuff and the tables are a little on the smaller side I ended up building a table extension to help hold the wood while I work on splitting the other half.

I'm impressed with the power and speed of splitting.

In all honesty that splitter has some sweet features. One thing I've found with similar designs is that you can tip up the entire unit and it will balance on it's own wheels. At this point you drop the prop leg and use it as a handle to move the unit around your work area. I don't drag or roll chunks of wood to the splitter either .... I roll the splitter to the chunks when possible.

I've got a splitter like this but I moved the valve to the top so I can split from either side. Some hoses and fittings and it's a LOT better. Not bound to one side any more. Also use ethanol gas and because I don't run it hammered I never have an engine problem. I'm not in a hurry anyway.

Looks like a really well built machine. The 4way wedge is a great to have too. The only splitter I have used is a Timberwolf, that one has a log lift with is worth its weight in gold.

I have the 37 ton Northern Tool log splitter which has all of the features of the one in the video except the rotating plate. The Northern Tool splitter comes with and automatic throttle which reduces the throttle to idle when the ram is completely retracted save gas and noise from the much more reliable and quieter Honda motor. The Northern Tool splitter also comes with a rear leg to increase stability when used horizontally.

Nice....I just looked it up & I like that rear leg. How much is the 4-way wedge as an add-on option? Also....the small wheel front leg --- does that have issues rolling around in grass/dirt/gravel? Looks like your splitter is over 40% more expensive than this one.

don't remember how much the wedges were and the front leg has no wheel but I never move it so does not really mater.

It may save gas but it slows down your production time because it takes time for the engine to cycle back up. I've watched the Northern Tool compete against Country Line's lower HP splitter and the Country Line blew it away. Probably not a problem if you're a homeowner but if you're using this as side income, people should consider that aspect.

Moving wedge splitters such as this are far more productive than fixed wedge. The unsplit portion of the log is not pushed away from the operator making it far easier to retrieve.

Can an optional log lift be purchased with this unit, in either a hydraulic or manual option. Then I could see it being in my stable to work with. Looks also with a small hydraulic tank and that big an engine the oil will get hot very fast.

I like the spliter.. I find the newer designs lackluster for me . I wish the table hight was adjustable working half bent over kinda sucks (I'm 6'5") the other thing is the hydraulic tank/ axel is to far back or forward, I wish they could open up the operating side at least to where the wheel was mixed in with your feet. . the one I have , have chopped the pivot point and elevated the platform 8 " up but I can figure out how to get the wheel outta my way. I will not work with mine pivoted over due to health issues. I can't work on my knees prolonged periods nor bent over or my stomach tends to reject it's contents lol.. so others can work with it in the vertical and fix alot of my complaints. I am currently working on moving my hydraulic tank to well beyond the rear which will make it back easier and get the wheel out of the way of my feet. also the 4 ways are handy if you are splitting common 10 to 16" diameter rounds however of you get into 28 and bigger stuff it kinda seems to complicate things but to each thier own. I dang sure ain't no expert. great video.. as usual

I only watched this because I have seen some of your other stuff before and got a notification. I would not have a use for this device but glad I watched it anyway. I would have thought there would be throttle control for when your aren't actually operating the lever, to save wear and fuel.

And that is what makes you a great subscriber! :) As far as the throttle goes, it honestly would take more time to throttle up/down between logs than it would be worth & also I think that up/down would be harder on the engine. It does have a large throttle control lever on the motor & I turned it down occasionally when simply idling, but when splitting it wasn't an issue.

anyone have any experience with the wood-mizer tempest splitters and there production rate. I hate stacking and restacking .

The ability to easily remove the cylinder with the pin in the back instead of a complicated bracket mounted at the front of the cylinder makes it much more serviceable when refurbishment is needed down to road.

Is there a reason why they didn't put a locking caster on that fold down leg? then you can basically do the same thing you did with the trailer dolly right off the bat.

I thought about adding one, but honestly due to the weight of the unit & the fact that all that weight would be forced against the leg's pivot point --- it seemed like it would be bound to fail very soon after using. Also, with the trailer dolly, it has large pneumatic wheels that roll easily over different types of ground & the trailer leg with wheel would be best for concrete/asphalt only.

i just received my 35 ton half beam. it seems competitive with other splitters i have owned or rented. my only real gripe is its weight keeps me from moving it very far, i put on a wheeled trailer jack instead of the leg supplied and can now roll it where is need it. i am researching whether it can be made electric start, i am 74 and pull starting is getting tough. i am going to put on a log table the will increase th area for logs and protect the motor. i an very impressed with the price, $1499 and free shipping.

Buy a trailer dolly...... manual or powered..... makes life much easier.

I would never tow a splitter on the highway, I use a small trailer with suspension to haul it on.

Why they don’t make the wedges longer by a few inches? It’ll speed up the splitting and you won’t need to constantly finish separating by hand.

What size tires did you swap on to the trailer dolly?

I only use mine in vert.pos.i sit on log wih foam pad get all the wood within arms reach alot easier on back.I also plumbed mine with a car muffler so its whisper guiet no ear plugs needed.

About 5 years ago they used to give them away as a promo item online.....I think you filled out a survey or something & got one. They should bring them back....but as of now, they are no more.

If the tilt feature is used to move to vertical, while attached to the vehicle, does the tongue weight reduce and permit easier release from the hitch? It's clear how much easier it is to move using the dolly, but once the unit is vertical, can it be positioned with or without the dolly in place?

+Fred U. It does reduce the tongue weight, but if you can lift the beam up it shouldn't be an issue anyway. Since nothing except gravity "locks" the beam vertically, I wouldn't suggest moving the base unless the beam is in the horizontal position --- so it won't accidentally fall on you.

Does anyone make a splitter that has the cylinder the other way around so that after the log splits it doesn't fall onto the motor?

Great video. I have the same wood splitter. Do you have an issue with the hydraulic system (the cylinder, pump / lever, and reservoir) getting really hot? Mine gets so hot after usage that it will still burn you after being shut off for 1.5 hours. It's so hot after an hour that you could cook on it. However, it does not appear to affect the performance. I have already notified Yardmax and they have taken note of my issue but don't have a solution. I have only had this since November 2016.

replacing the bends with longer more graduals ones may help as its reducing friction also replacing the outlet hose from the ram to the tank with a bigger dia one can also reduce friction which is causing heat and may also speed up the cycle time , putting a bigger oil tank on can also help and bringing the pump closer to the height of the oil tank can also help by reducing the distance it has to lift the oil

Hi from New Zealand, good review but you seem to make a lot of extra work double handling your blocks. We all know hydraulic cycle times are relatively slow but it would have been better if you had done a real time split so people could see its true cycle time. Cheers

I spent about 90-100 hours on this vid.....and drove 250 miles.....it isn't quite as easy as people think.

you did a good job explaining this unit.... but i did not care much for that 4 way wedge it makes a mess out of the wood

That nice straight grain Red Oak can be split so easy with a mall! Try some knotty American or Slippery Elm!

I own one of these, I never would have believed this before owning this tool. This splitter cuts right through 6" fir knots like a hot knife through butter. I swear this splitter will split anything. I did my homework before buying this tool, as I do all my tools. I read one comment "what this splitter doesn't split it will destroy" and I'm here to tell you that's a fact.

I'm 65 and have just ended my "maul" career....Getting one of these.

In this video your wood you are splinting is kind of on the short side. I like my wood a lot longer. I have a wood furnace that heats my home in the winter. It will take up to a 3 foot piece of wood. But I usually use a 20 or 25 piece of wood. Will this splinter work for me?

My dad has a small woodstove, so that is the size he uses. The max capacity for this is 26-1/2".

Those wheels as shown on this splitter would never get passed by DOT where I live. They look like implement wheels/tires. The bearing in this wheel does not appear to be 'highway' rated. I would ask then what is the ply rating of those tires, I suspect they are less than 4 ply.

Mine has the same wheels. Whether the wheels are highway rated or not is irrelevant because the splitter's instruction manual gives a maximum towing speed lower than highway speeds... If you need to go long distances, you better just load it up on a trailer if you plan to use it on the highway.

Most splitter tires are street legal but can only be towed up to 45mph. Not sure I would want to tow a splitter 65-70 down an interstate. That just seems unwise

Briggs and Stratton doesnt matter what gas you use will Brake carb will fail also have to use fuel stabilizer or void warrenty just had a pressure washer from troy bilt with a briggs and Stratton motor and i only use ethanol free vas and now i need a carb

Briggs and Stratton engines are among the best in the world for reliability

try not splitting big ones in half.just take off pieces that can fit in the stove.that way you don't have to keep bending over to resplit pieces.every stroke produces a finished piece that goes right from the splitter with one hand into the truck and the other hand readys for the next piece from the same log.get it? it will save you work keeping the log always on the splitter not picking up halves over and over all day.

I’d go for the full beam..... one piece of advice though, make sure that the piston is extended fully before you try and change it from horizontal to vertical. That greatly reduces the weight you lift and balances the center of gravity.

The speed is appealing from the "looks" of it.....but if you noticed in this vid, you #1 don't have to retract the ram fully each time & #2 it doesnt have to penetrate all the way through in order to split the wood & #3 it has a 4-way wedge creating twice as many pieces per cycle. I am sure the "rapid-fire" may be faster in cycle time, but I doubt it can split wood much faster than this unit. Also....what is going to happen when ONE tooth breaks off of the rapid fire arm? It is out of commission as far as I can see.

Have used Super Splitter after use slow hydraulic type and what a difference. Way, way faster. Took 3 people to keep up. One running handle and two to feed and take away. Quite a workout.

Peanut Man what about knotty logs or a piece that has more than 2 or 3 branches, I get a lot of this kind of wood,no one else wants it but it burns great hot & slow,I have a 25 ton & I have yet to find anything it won't split or cut in half

not much of an upgrade from a husky log splitter if you ask me the only upgrade it has over a husky is the cradle once the wood is split and I maybe the cycle time but none of us know the cycle time

Needs a honda moter

Honestly I refuse to get a log splitter because I value the manual labor and exercise of splitting wood.

Yeah I can see that.....better than wasting money at a gym & you are probably in better shape than 99% of the people there chugging workout supplements :) haha.......but my dad is getting older & I am trying to help him do things the "easy way" so he doesnt end up pulling his back or overworking himself these days. At least you know IF you get to that point, these things do actually work!

You can get a good work out with a splitter... Manual splitting one core of wood in a day vs Splitter Ten core of wood in a day... Nice work out either way... Right The only difference is I make 10 times the money per day... LOL

I have large maple rounds you can't split. I've dared buddies to split one with mauls, wedges with sledges, etc.. total FAIL. I own 40 acres of heavy timber including old growth and 2nd growth

I bought a 28 ton yard max upon starting I noticed it rattles really loud ! Is this something anyone has experienced ? And if so is it possible to make it less noisy ? Thanks any info would be helpful !

+Nitro Nick it may be your hinge pin for the beam rattling. You could add some washers to it possibly & that might stop it.

+Peanut Man : I buy it all the time. It is 94 octane. It is all I use in my small engines. Check the link above in +Adam Rivera's post to you to see if it available near you. The best part is I haven't had to replace a fuel line in years.

.... So, I would have appreciated seeing some real time non speed up working with this unit.. Hard to tell with it all sped up to show work done faster....

I get aggravated with the way manufactures over rate their products. 35t = 70,000 psi. Lets do the math. 5in cylinder, area=pi r squared. 2.5 X 2.5 X 3.14= 19.625. 2 stage hydraulic pump, 3,000 psi. Splitter valve kickout pressure 2,750 (typical).19.625 X 2,750psi = 53,968.75 psi = 26.98ton. lets try full pressure, 19.625 X 3,000psi = 58,875psi = 29.4375ton. This false information is partly why I decided to build my own splitter.....and for a little more money, i built a FAR superior splitter.

Deceptive video because the play back speed is doubled or tripled or MORE. No way to tell the speed of this unit by watching this video

The cycle time on this is rated at 16 seconds. That's not very speedy when you're doing several cords per year.

You don’t have to fully extend/retract….. just enough to split and back off is the quickest method.

I do not recommend yardmax, my log splitter broke down spill hydraulic fluid and I have to replace the cylinder too, stay away from yardmax, they don’t honor the warranty either.

So you make money with that thing? You go to someone's house and chop the tree and split it up?

I have made money on my 20 ton splitter, I charge $35/hr 3 hr minimum . First job was 10 hours 2 cords pine and 2 cords Eucalyptus, the pine kicked my butt

If that amount of wood split was split on a full tank of gas, it is a gas hog, I have one that is 37 ton and will split 4 times the amount you had split, and only has a half gallon and the original engine was replaced with a china knock off of a Honda engine, I have never had luck with Briggs and Scrap Iron engines. as that manufacturer has cut too any corners in making their engines, how those engines got past the quality control is beyond my comprehension.
