Extreme Mustang Makeover 2022- Newt's Journey (100 Day Training Challenge)

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Newt is a 3-year-old mustang gelding from Diamond Nevada. He was my randomly assigned draw for the 2022 Extreme Mustang Makeover in Fort Worth Texas.
We picked up in May and had approximately 120 days to tame, train, and compete with our mustangs September 8-10. Trainers and mustangs spend the time preparing for a handling & conditioning class, trail class, and maneuvers class. Top 10 competes Saturday night and a competitive bid and auction follows the makeover.
110 trainers picked up initially for this competition, 55 made it to the event.
Newt and I made the Top 10 landing 6th overall in the Prelim classes. We had steady compulsory and freestyle classes which gave us a great placing overall of 3rd. He is going to a really good home in California.

I'm not crying, you're crying. My gosh, what a beautiful tribute to a very cool little horse. He's such a sweetie. His snorts always made me smile. Every horse that is lucky enough to be assigned or picked by you, Sam, is one lucky horse....and the new owners are even luckier to have a horse so wonderfully trained. Your love of working with these Mustangs just shines thru and thru. Congratulations on Newt's third place! Hope we get to see some sneak peaks as Newt continues to mature.

There is nothing plain about that horse, bay is a beautiful color....nice black mane, tail and legs...and he has a whole lot of try in him for such a young horse. I hope somebody that keeps working with him got him as he'll make a great horse for a long time. Nice job and thanks for the video

Thank you for reminding me that horses can start out very reactive and still be a super solid citizen with some time. I just got an overgrown (16+hh) 2 year old and whenever she is reactive, I worry I made a mistake. Hope she turns out to be like Newt!

  • @loncho5079

Try not to worry! Horses pick up on the slightest stress that you're feeling and it has a negative affect on them. Conversely, they can also sense your positive thoughts and happy emotions, so try to think happy thoughts and visualize them successfully obeying you, and how good you both will feel because of it. They pick up on any positive visualizations that you have in your mind and it helps them feel secure about trusting you and wanting to bond with you as their leader.

4:20 When first got my Icelandic & having to treat his sore ears, he would do that same behavior. Turn & bolt & pull. Unlike you, I was unable to hold the rope or handle that situation. Got a rope burn & pulled over. Every time he would yank out of my hands & get away, even with wearing gloves. He'd take off to the safety of my other horse, as they were buddies & other horse was his safe place. I'm impressed with your rope skills & strength / patience & athletic abilities. -- In my case, no rush required & being older (not aso strong / athletic) ended up switching to liberty with positive reinforcement clicker training & letting him choose to stay. A really great ear cream (Dermafas) also helped soothe the sore ears. -- Very strong back end on that young gelding. You are so talented!

Do you suppose in his old age he'll be standing in the paddock telling all of the young geldings about the wonderful adventures he had in his youth with a girl named Sam?
