Extreme Minimalism | Week 2

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Oh my glob, sorry I was such a Sad Susan this week! I honestly cannot control my depressive episodes and this one came out of nowhere with no warning. :( I wanted this week's vlog to be more interesting, but it looks like that backfired, haha.

I think you are very honest, genuine, and brave! A lot of emotions can come to the surface after decluttering your space, you are less distracted by your material possessions and are starting to do the real emotional work that needs to be done. You are growing and it's wonderful to see! Saying things out loud that you'd like to change can be very healing. Emotional eating is a way of numbing these feelings that are coming to the surface. Don't beat yourself up too much about Pizza Hut, it's incredibly addictive! Just remind yourself of the way it made you feel the last time you had it when you feel the urge to eat it again. You are doing great! Thank you for sharing your journey :)

Hey! Don't feel so bad!! Enjoy spending money on sushi!! Keep doing your channel if it makes you happy! Gerty is so cute, and she makes you so happy! I think we all go through emotional rollercoasters, keep your head high, and move on from your financial decisions that didn't make you happy. Keep working on surrounding yourself with items/people that encourage you. Keep going!

It was so nice to see that you ended your week on a positive note! Something that changed my life after becoming somewhat minimalist is taking my dog for long walks. At any time of day or night. My dog whines all the time (much like Gertrude haha) so exposing him to stimulus and exercise makes him happy, helps us bond, and there are absolutely zero negatives when you're outside soaking up vitamin D and getting a bit of exercise. Keep your head up and get that comfy chair if it makes you happy! Also - I have a standing lamp with a calming green bulb in it that I only turn on during the night that helps tell my body that it's nighttime

Give yourself permision for just being. I know it sounds like "too simple", but I tell you because it has worked for me: Say to yourself that it's okay not to be perfect, that you are not your stuff, if there is some mess, whatever! You are awesome and unique. Be thankful for your journey. The reason you are doing this minimalism thing on the first place is because you know something needs to be changed. Change hurts, but thank your pain, because that's what tells you to figure out how to be the best version of yourself. I started watching your videos because I'm on the same journey, and I totally get you because I felt the same way about things not being perfect, I promisse if you keep working on yourself it will get better.

Don't be so hard on yourself when it comes to spending money on necessities or just in life in general. I know when you're feeling down one tends to be hard on themselves, but you have to challenge yourself to think positive everyday. It's not an easy task at all but take it one day at a time.

I love your raw honesty. You are really learning alot about yourself. Thought- when you feel like crap it is going to be nearly impossible to think of ways to pull yourself up. On a good day/hour create some lists- Freezer list of food to keep so I don't eat Pizza Hut, Things to do that will break the cycle of crappiness- walk with Gertrude, play in a new park with Gertrude(she makes you smile every time). Use the library- free wifi, free resources, lists of free activities on message boards. Bottom line- you are worth i!

Don't worry about spending money when you're low, its just a coping technique, that isn't necessarily bad if its stuff you need. Hell, i remember having a panic attack and buying £44 worth of make-up without thinking.

my heart goes out to you. you know, there is a difference between minimalism and being frugal. its ok to spend money on stuff that adds value to your life. when i first moved to a minimalist lifestyle i had depressed moments. cause i didnt have stuff to distract me and everything was so empty that stuff started coming up. its like a natural impuls to fill the space somehow. you are not alone with that. greetings all the way from germany

I dont know, I have less of an issue spending on consumables that I will use and enjoy. The only tweak I would make is make healthy choices for food :) easier said than done sometimes tho. I'm really liking your videos. I especially enjoy how you share why you will keep or discard, esp your books.

Feel for you and your depression illness, and in particular the tough relationship with food (I struggle with a food-associated mental illness and body image issues). Really appreciate your honesty as you struggle with this. Your ability to communicate about it is a huge step in the right direction. In terms of guilt over buying beauty products, I saw some you tubers who switched to using bicarbonate soda for basically everything (shampoo, face wash, bodywash, toothpaste) and after some research I switched too and it saves money and eliminates multiple products as you can use the same thing for nearly everything. Carrie Simple (now just Carrie) has a youtube video on diy beauty products, take a look! xx ( she also struggle(d) with depression and eating/food issues and communicates well about it.

shoeboxenterprises Linda thank you so much for commenting! If there's anything I've learned from this experiment, it's that admitting things and being honest about issues are the best way to deal with them in my case. I do have to warn you though that sodium bicarbonate is a basic substance and your body's natural pH is acidic. Using basic products can damage your skin by breaking down the acid mantle, a layer if fatty acids covering the skin, that protects against bacterial infections and also keeps moisture on the correct side of the barrier. I went to trade school for skincare, so I'm really particular about what I put on my skin and definitely prefer to have a non-minimalist approach.

If you want something that you will like don't feel guilty for it because in the end of it all of it you don't do what you like and spend money on a food item you enjoy or whatever then what is life for to not enjoy things?

I'm a stranger on the net so I don't know your whole story but perhaps your feeling down because you're living in such a simple way without creature comforts that would normally help you get out of a depression funk. Super cool that you're experimenting with the way you live. As for food habits have you considered meal preps or meal plans? If you have food already made up you'll have less take out temptations and can budget better. If you're making food that's healthy make sure it's meals you enjoy so it helps you be motivated to eat it.

  • @TheBadMinimalist

Funnily enough, that was one of my shortest depression stints. A lot of my "creature comforts" are hella unhealthy (like staying burritoed in a bed all day, overeating, etc) and while I was feeling down a.f. I was still functioning at a pretty decent level. I've tried meal prep before, but batch cooking for me leads to overeating. >.>

The Bad Minimalist that's great that you had a shorter stint of depression (see didn't know what I was talking about 😝). Pity that meal prepping didn't help, good luck with you relationship to food, I hope you find something that will work for you.

I think you are actually doing great. Being able to acknowledge what makes you unhappy or unwell and learning lessons from what you experience is key to improving your life and you seem to have mastered that. Also good job on that extreme minimalism experiment. It is really interesting to hear you talk about what you think and learn along the way. Thank you for sharing. :)

Ok, Sad Susan, Bad Minimalist: please take some feedback from an Irresponsible Debbie Downer who only seems ok because she's "faking it": you are doing so much for yourself and have come so far with how you treat yourself. Realizing that Pizza Hut is bad for you emotionally is SO important. You are working hard, and you should take some time to sit back, breathe in and thank yourself for devoting time and energy to your well-being. I have been seeing a psychiatrist who is also my talk therapist weekly for over a year and can honestly say that it has saved my life. Keep up the good work! I believe in you.

I have so many things to say, but first, the guts you have to film in the bath! I hope KZread doesn't remove this video. Second, you have NO reason to feel guilty for buying things you need. So what if you had a little bit of shampoo left? You needed to replace it soon anyways, it's not like you bought a lifes supply of $40 shampoos. In fact, that lush shampoo bar is the best you could possibly do, especially environmentally. You go girl! Keep your head up, you're freaking awesome even without the fancy-ass editing everyone has. Love love loving your channel And it's definitely okay to treat yourself to some pizza when you're feeling down, okay? Maybe try vegan pizza next time with some yummy veggies? Might be easier on your emotions and your tummy Also, I'm not into beauty videos, but you keep mentioning your other channel and there's no link in the description?
