Extreme flooding in coastal areas

Climate change has just became real, causing extreme flooding in coastal areas particularly in Western Cape.
This coastal area has experienced high rise in water levels which resulted in dangerous and costly flooding in the Western Cape. eNCA speaks to Dr Jan De Vynck a Paleo-ecolgist at the University of the Witwatersrand. #DStv403

Stop talking crap, this was normal storms all the years,in cape town and overberg and up the coast lived in it experinced it, if you build in low lying areas and infrastructue not maintained you get flooding, records of 20 50,and a 100 year floods are available.

News should talk less kak, and more about government being useless and unprepared for these changes.

The flooding is due to an increase in urban expanse. Surface runoff INCREASES because water absorption per soil area has been reduced. DURRR. More hard surfaces eg roads, car parks etc = less water absorption by soil, consequently more surface water. House and property walls retain more water per stand, increasing ground water build up, which on slopes = mudslides, building collapse owing to sub surface water pressure build up. Building on slopes now, highly dangerous, like the informal settlements on river verges.

De Vynk is wrong to the suggest that the current planetary warming can be explained by Milankovitch cycles (he called this the Malinowski theory). It is also not debatable that the majority of this change is anthropogenic.

All pretty normal Ben, we have only been around 40-60 years, in earth terms we can't judge a few storms etc, and we know the sea levels have been higher than now, and we just came out of a min ice age, so why are we all of a sudden supprised?

That's Polital Climate change, how I wish for a Apartheid government that was prepared for disaster management, do you remember the Laingsburg flooding ND government's efficiency in dealing with the aftermath. These ANC political clowns could learn from an Apartment government that were better at humanitarian behavior even if their moral compas were comprised, bring back those days.....
