Extreme Budget Living: Car Tour of Living SUPER Cheap in a TINY Car!

In today's video we see a miracle happen before our eyes-a tiny car turned into a comfortable tiny home, that gets 37 MPG! A good friend of mine converted his sub-compact car into a remarkably comfortable little space by taking out the back seat and the passenger seat. He then used 2x2's and plywood to make a flat floor with openings to use all the storage room in the foot wells and where the seat was. Finally, he used inexpensive bins to make excellent storage and organization. I think you will be amazed at what a pleasant life you can have in such a small space! I hope if you are forced to live in a car, this gives you HOPE that your life is not over, in fact the best times of your life may be ahead of you!

LOL I was just thinking the same I went from having a beautiful house with three living rooms all furnished book brand new because nobody was ever home to sit in it hubs always in my bedroom LOL and when I had to leave I had to put stuff in storage and I send the biggest storage unit cost me a fortune it was heated and everything else in there and me and my dogs are in the car at Walmart living out of my car and I'm thinking what's wrong with this picture I didn't ever own those 12 rooms of beautiful furniture. That looked brand new, lol 😆 beautiful out was, nooooooo ever sat in any of the many rooms, not even me, Except one of my tan suede recliner that was in front of a wall 😅 of a TV, where my husband comes, a foreman for big construction, walk in with his oooler, boots got kicked off, next socks, remote wrestling 😊and he was on doggies heaven, lol, Anyway... that didn't last long, zap my hip in half out on a black rock, two Thanksgivings ago and during the worst storm we've had in decades and lol, I'm out that, can't swim, my leg floating away from me and me trying to grab what felt like a two pound water tree stump , my two dogs up on the landing and the water was forecasted to dust start to freeze over, and I'm in it. My phone in my truck, 6 hours later of my just literally finishing cervical cancer, that they said they wouldn't even treat, it be useless... We're the words that will make me do anything, sometime telling me, I CAN'T DO SOMETHING I WON'T MAKE IT. .. I SAID, LOOK DOCTOR, FOR THAT LAST SIX YEARS I WANTED TO DIE, FOUND MY BEAUTIFUL ALCOLHIC SISTER DEAD IN A DUMPSTER UP NORTH PHILADELPHIA , MY MOM WAS ALREADY HOOKED UP TO A HUGE TANK TO BTEATHE AND MY BIG BROTHER AND BEST FRIEND 💙 COULDN'T GET UP OFF HIS KNEES , WHEN WE GOT THE CALL UP GO TO INDENTIFY THE BODY, I BROUGHT MY BEST FRIEND WITH ME BECAUSE SHE KNOW AND LOVED HER FOREVER TOO. ANYWAY, THE SHOWED ME HER. AND I SAID THE WORST THING AFTER IMMEDIATELY IT REGISTRING THAT I ACTUALLY SAID WITH SUCH A SHOUT OF GLEE. I SAID AFTER LOOKING ACTUALLY AT THE FACE. NO. THAT'S NOT HER THANK .... THANK GOD THAT'S NOT HURT.... AND I STARTED TO CRY LOOKING AT MY BEST FRIEND 😢 AND SAID, NANCY.. WHAT KIND OF MONSTER AM I TOO TRULY SHOW 😔 THAT WASN'T MY SISTER BUT SHE WAS SOMEONE'S BEST FRIEND DAUGHTER, WIFE MOTHER, ETC ??? I LOST IT, AND HER HOLDING ME, SAID YOUUUUUUU REACTED THAT'S ALL, BUT I GOT TO MAKE YOU HEAR ME, AND KNOW I'VE NEVER LIED TO YOU. NANNIE, THAT IS MOZ, (nickname)=MAUREEN.. I got definite and was calling her a low right Lier... She said, Nannie the Cormier explained that her face deflates and she looks nothing like her beautiful self. Anyway ,I have no idea how I got to this point of, that awesome guy talking about trying anything in to something. Other then, growing up semi poor, I don't think now is ever would of changed that... because necessity is... THE MOTHER OF INVESTMENT 😉 , RIGHT ????1😀. ANYWAY, I LOVE THIS STUFF, MAKING SOMETHING OUT OF NOTHING, XO I'M SO SORRY I GOT DETAILED, AND PULLED YOU INTO A MOMENT OF MY PAST, IT TRULY WASN'T MY INTENTION, XO PLEASE FORGIVE ME.

Now my high top cargo van is coming in a few days but I'm more and more thinking I'll just build it out (for the fun of the build as I adore building stuff), sell it, and get something much much smaller for myself. Yes, the economy is going bankrupt and a lot more people are going to need to live out of their cars because that is all they may have as homes are outrageously priced because the US government allows the rich corporations and elites of the whole world to come over here and buy up our houses and apartments and farmlands and then gauge Americans rent. Americans need to demand that Congress pass laws making it illegal for foreigners and foreign corporations to buy American real property or corporations.

One thing I think which would make this build even better is to leave the hole on the right hand side of the bench seat empty so that you can sit upright with your feet down there. It also makes getting into the car through that door easier. There would still have to be a panel to close it off when sleeping. You'd lose some storage space but it is nice to be able to sit upright in a chair type of position. Perhaps allowing one of those floor panels to be propped up to form a backrest when sitting at that spot could be a nice addition too.

I'd imagine the hybrid version though more of a slug with the 1.6 v the 1.8 should beat that especially in combined city driving. and yeah it's got a very low profile the front of the car cant even clear a typical parking block so you can pull all the way into a parking space.

Hi bob! I am planning to buy a small car like this size and make a similar build like this, but i would only make the sleeping platform and keep the area behind the driver seat a bit free. So i can sit on the bed platform facing the left side and make something like a desk / kitchen on the left side, but keep some space for my legs. This way, i can make a bucket size hole in the bed platform with a lid, so i can hang a bucket with a plastic bag underneath the bed, creating a toilet system in the car. The bed platform wil be able to recline upwards to be able to lounge as well. It is still an idea, but i want to buy a cheap old car for this to try and test it out. 😁

@@sarahvegangarden4822 I'm a vegan also! For one thing, my dogs (also rescues) are smaller: the largest is only about 26 pounds. But it's ongoing trial-and-error. I was a tent camper and decided to use my car about 4 or 5 years ago, before I knew about Bob's videos. That first year I taped T-shirts over the windows and slept in a mess of gear with the pups fighting over spots. After I discovered Bob--and Suanne in her Prius--my methods became more refined. My seats don't fold down flat, so to create an even sleeping surface I have a storage box that's the same depth as the recessed area above the spare tire (and I keep my food and cooking supplies in that box). For a bed I place intersecting precut boards end-to-end, covered with a comfy tri-fold outdoor lounge-chair cushion and a sleeping bag on top of that. I use clothes bags to create 3 sleeping spots for the dogs that approximate their preferred spots in my bed at home, and they immediately learned to go to their own spot, even tho they aren't nearly as smart as staffies (I love them just as they are, tho). I keep my supplies on the non-sleeping side and in the foot wells, but squeezing my luggable loo into the car is a struggle. My neighbor at the RTR inspired me to buy a decent tent to use as a dressing room/bathroom/living room, but I haven't had a chance to try that out yet. And in order to sit outside in hot sun or light rain, I attach a tarp to the car roof with the incredibly strong magnets Bob recommends. However, because I'm a generally careless and disorganized person, I can't stealth camp, as at times we kind of just spill out of the car. And my sweet dogs would be too barky with people walking past at night. I hope maybe something in all my blathering is helpful! :)

@@susanbradaninibetz1493 Bless you! That was super-helpful! I really admire what you're doing. One point, and maybe it's the rainy British weather (I'm English, btw), but if I wasn't extremely careful to keep airing them, I found the ex-sofa cushions I was sleeping on tended to get very damp and mouldy underneath, even though I placed sturdy perforated plastic squares under them to lift them up off the car-floor slightly and allow airflow underneath. (The squares are the type people use to stabilise earth or gravel on driveways etc). Even in hot weather they still got damp and needed turning and airing every day. Do you find anything similar with your bed? Maybe it is just what my cushions happen to be made of, and I need to find another solution. I was thinking of a lounger seat, as you are using, but I didn't have one available. I might look again. I haven't used magnets outside the car (I'll check that out) but I used magnets to hold cloth to the windows for curtains at night. I used bungee cords to fix the tarp to the car roof. I have a Skoda Roomster. The seats lift out, which is why I chose it, but the floor is very lumpy so like you I needed to create a smooth sleeping space. I'm also fortunately short (5' 3"), so I can lie behind the passenger seat with my feet in the boot area, by the tailgate. Like you, I haven't stealth camped (only one - very sleepless! - night) because the dogs are too barky. Great to meet another vegan! 💕💕 All the best with your travels!!

@@sarahvegangarden4822 With your climate, car size, and dogs, you are generating a LOT of condensation. Your bedding must have full breathing space between the car and the cushions.. Look at IKEA type bed slats. A crib size might fit your space. Otherwise you would need to cut a queen size in half. You could end up with respiratory issues if your problem isn't solved. Airing out, even on a regular basis, does not get rid of the mold already growing in the foam and covers.

I've recently removed the rear seats from my car, it's a Nissan Note & converted it into a camper-car. No building & nothing is fixed to the car. I used plywood to create a level floor & glued some insulation to the underside (I live in the UK lol) then carpet on top of the wood. I use a foam chair-bed to sleep & sit on. I have a camping toilet, cooking area, chill out area & still plenty of creative storage space. It all works perfectly well & love it. I don't live in it, I use it for camping as I can't use a tent. I also just bought a second hand roof box from facebook marketplace to store my outdoor chair & table, firewood, BBQ & the usual car stuff that I don't need all the time. It's brilliant & barely cost me anything at all as most of the things I already had at home, it was only the wood & the roof box that I had to buy & I enjoyed the whole process.

In daytime driving mode you can't see a thing except the top of the chest fridge sitting behind the passenger seat on the floor (though you don't know what it is), the front seat organizers (which are very neat and plain), the 4 lb dog's small puff pillow and the solar panels on the top of the car which you assume are part of the hybrid alternative fuel system. No one would ever guess this car is lived in 24/7.
