Extrema Ratio Selvans Expeditions Review

Спорт

In part 2 of my field assessment of the Selvans Expeditions by Extrema Ratio, I explore how easy it is or how hard it is to perform basic outdoor tasks as apposed to more crazy tasks as seen in part 1 about the Selvans Expeditions. Please read my extensive blog about this model and see how it differs from the original Selvans. See also a quick introduction and first time comparison with the mighty ONTOS.
Whether or not one takes such a blade on a real expedition depends upon many things, for example but not limited to: Location, (tropics, montane regions, Artic (I doubt it?), desert/arid regions etc.) Funding; Purpose of expedition, eg bush bashing through solid jungle to clear a helicopter landing space in PNG for a caving expedition? You would be carrying machetes as well, guides etc etc.
For me, this is just a name on the knife, rather this knife is a sort of evolution of the ONTOS (they even say similar) whereby the Selvans Expeditions has a more optimal cutting capabilities due to a reduced overall blade thickness.
A tip that more resembles a drop point than the pronounced tanto tip of the Ontos or other basic Selvans. The blade is also much wider than that of the ONTOS and without the upper swedge and having a full width spine near the tip allows one to easily place the palm of their hand here for added downward pressure as what can be applied when cutting through large fish.
The overall shape of the Selvans Expeditions has of course it's roots in the ONTOS and has thus been around for almost 12 years and I believe there is a bit to say about it's design, too much for any one video. For those who liked the ONTOS but hated the spine serrations then the Selvans Expeditions could fill that gap.
Hence IMHO the Selvans Expeditions is better suited for more general (but heavy duty work included) work around campsites. With the very versatile sheath it is easily accommodated on various packs other than just worn on the hip. With the synthetic type rubber welt there is no chance of any edge being dulled by insertion or extraction.
What did I notice in particular about this blade?
The blade finish appears to be easily removed and this is I believe because the blade finish is simply the raw finish after heat treating with a brief stone wash. If blade finished are your thing, then this could bug you as every time i wiped the blade to clean it.
More to come.

You can do anything with it. if you haven't already seen my adventures with the ONTOS, similar in form to it in Australia, check those videos too. You know what it's like there.

There are blades that can stay razor sharp, after shopping that wood! Just try a Vanadis 4 Extra or even a good custom ballbearing steel knife! They will chop that wood, and do all the rest of the tasks all day, and they won't need sharpening at all. Extrema Ratios uses soft steel, because they are hard use knife designs and they also chose stainless which makes the steel even softer! I won't say, that they've done a wrong choice there, because I've never seen an Extrema Ration knife fail (break), and that's how they should be, since they are military/survival style knives.

Exactly, well stated! For exampleI own a Linder very high Rockwell hunting knife and so far i haven't even though about touching up the edge LOL. Tis was made with ATS-34 and if followed correctly a proper scientific heat treatment regime, this knife steel can def hold a very sharp edge for a very long time. Yes the high vanadium carbide content in the steel you mention can easily hold such an edge.

Is the blade full tang? It looks half tang.

It goes from being almost full width to a slightly tapered end. Don't worry, it's 6mm thick and very very strong, belted the daylights out of it for all sorts of extreme tasks in the Ozzy bush/jungle. It's been around the globe with me too several times. You can see it featured in many videos here on the channel. Feel free to ask me anything about it. If you can't find the other vids or have any questions about them just ask away. Thanks for watching and commenting.

@@BushCampingTools I saw 2 screws in the handle and didn't know if 1 or both actually went through the tang. Thanks for the info.

You really shouldn’t food prep with a coated knife.

I guess you aren't using PTFE coated pots and pans but it is just a black oxide. Maybe you are concerned with nano particles ingestion?
