Extrema Ratio Dobermann IV Big Knife Field Review

Спорт

Extrema Ratio Ratio Dobermann IV Big Knife field Review. I took the Dobermann IV out in the wilds for several weeks and put it through the paces in both wet and dry weather. From chopping tests to cutting meat off the bone. It performed flawlessly and I have to say it was extremely comfortable to use, It's a big knife and if you like big knives and find them your thing then the Dobermann IV could be right for you.
Blade steel N690 Bohler/Uddeholm martensitic stainless with Cobalt. 58 Rockwell, best of both worlds for easy to sharpen, holdinbg and edge and optimizing corrosion resistance. There is a plain polished version of the knife for civilian usage and comes with a leather scabbard. The Dobermann IV comes with a lifetime warranty and 6 years warranty on the tactical scabbard, which is fully Molle compatible. Shore hardness of the Forprene handle is 80-90 giving a great tactile grip wet or dry. Anyway check it out!

    Hi, thanks for watching! When I first saw this crazy shaped handle I didn't know what to think but in that second I had my hand on the handle, I thought mate, that's some comfortable grip but not just comfortable but resists twisting. Then I started to look into how Extrema Ratio came to this design and found all this stuff they did with a bunch of crazy scientists (like me-just joking!), no but seriously, some very good research into human biomechanics and this handle came out of their experiments. I have to say I can not fault it. When ur cashed up, go for it, you'll understand what I mean. The only other knives I own with also a well-thought out ergonomic grip are those from Kizlyar Supreme tactical echelon series, they are also extremely comfortable.

    thu lay Hi there are parts of Australia where there are actually native occurring bamboos, northern Australia. The species you see here is sort of naturalized from over 150 years ago, so it's not native but is found in many northern parts of the country (if you know were t look for it). Banana's have been grown commercially in Australia for many many years and there are "wild escapees" too to be found. Of course further north of Australia, Indonesia has plenty of wild banana's to be found in the jungle. The sweet potatoes I show in the video of the EXTREMA RATIO TASK are wild ones too but introduced many many years ago. All Northern Australia. Thanks for you nice comments about my reviews, there are not many at present but I hope the quality shines through and they are informative, not just for knives and tools but for the odd bit of survival techniques etc. i will endeavor to post more videos specifically about wild food gathering etc in the future too.

    Is the tang strong on this knife ? I saw the exposed tang on your video on the ontos and looked good, although tapered, corners were rounded and tang was thick, in this knife is it the same ? Thank you

  • @BushCampingTools

    @BushCampingTools

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hi, the tang is exactly the same as the ONTOS, very strong, you will break before it does LOL! There is no problem with these tapered tangs, similar tang although not stepped, in my M7 also very strong. The Dobermann IV is a great knife if you like a big knife. In my experience (I've used mine extensively both in the southern and northern hemispheres in all kinds of environments on all sorts of stuff and I think it's, in reality one of ER better designs for outdoor usage. I'm not a military person but would think it's just way too big for strapping to a soldiers already plentiful equipment.

    Nice review mate. I've had the doberman in my mind as a possible candidate so I'm glad to see you've given it some stick. I just wish ER didn't bother with all the bs markings on it. Why would you need to be reminded of the hrc ?

  • @BushCampingTools

    @BushCampingTools

    9 жыл бұрын

    Hi thanks for your comments. As to the markings, I sort of agree on the overly large reminder of this but I certainly do like to see a manufacturer who is confident enough to put down (literally in writing) the HRC. They could have done this in smaller text near the handle. A lot of people don't like the markings. As to the knife, yes I like it a lot and it can take the "stick" as you put it. As far as big knives go, the Dobermann IV I feel is certainly better in my hands than the 299B i reviewed earlier on from Cudeman and a whole lot more comfortable, of course the is some difference in price but the differences are chalk and cheese. Hoping to review more of Extrema Ratio's knives................well see. Thanks for watching.

  • @BushCampingTools

    Alwyn Roberts Hi I d say for general bushcraft stuff and even heavy duty stuff like busting some wood up (if u are mindful of the tip)-using knife to start the split and finishing with wooden wedges/branches/stones etc, then the Extrema Ratio Task is very practical in this area. You saw me cutting through some big palm fronds, this needs a sharp knife and strong. You can thin down Lawyer canes (if u r in the tropics) to make friction material for fire starting, plus loads of other stuff etc and it cuts up food just great. The advantages the Dobermann IV has is, it's a bigger bad ass blade that you can pry with that tip and has the weight and perfect balance for chopping, something the TASK is not intended for. The ONTOS is a bit of an allrounder but of course it is intended as survival equipment, not a knife I'd take camping hiking all the time but if on an expedition (where u just can'tt take everything but the kitchen sink) then I'd take it. Hunting and camping, First TASK then Dobermann IV.BTW, I'll be showing some more vids on the Dobermann IV soon, am OS travelling with it so stay tuned and thanks for watching!

    Hi there, I know you've already done a sharpening video for the Ontos, but how do you sharpen the re-curve blade on this model? I've never had the best results with re-curve blades. Great video again.

  • @BushCampingTools

    @BushCampingTools

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Darren Turner Hi thanks for your comments and question. Ok recurved blades (where the curve is concave in shape- as apposed to a slight belly) are certainly more trickier to sharpen than a straight edge. For me, and I'm sure there are numerous techniques to sharpen such curves, I sometimes use a round steel rod wrapped in high grade emery cloth, ie wet and dry or some call it carborundum powder/silicon carbide. I only used this for blades where the edge has a symmetrical flat bevel. For the Dobermann IV or similar convex edges I'll use a narrow strip of wet and dry on a piece if soft to medium hard foam rubber sitting on a piece of wood. I always mark the edges first with a marker pen (like Dean O (kzread.info )recommends too that way I can see clearly what has and what hasn't been removed and as a check to make sure all is ok. NOw if you have a 20-22 degree beveled edge you can use a commercial sharpening device as these will definitely keep the same angles- I'm not a snob when it comes to knife sharpening and sometimes these devices work very well and get the knife razor sharp. However, as you know they won't work on a hand ground and or convex edges. For the Doberman IV I'm moving the knife in more of an arc. I'll Tell you what, I'll make a video about this.\\Hope that helps! BCT

  • @BushCampingTools

    Hi I think the ESEE knives are great but I think they too are expensive as 1095 costs nothing as a raw material. Ontario 1095 are more reasonably priced and that's why I have one and don't own any of the ESEE line. Yep love my ER Dobermann IV. Different blade geometries, different steels, different handles, no one can argue which is better or worse I believe. But yeah, I do know that thing about the "ESEE guys" LOL!

    Hi, it's much bigger and the Dobermann IV has more of a tapering point and the blade of course goes all the way to the hilt, so u have more cutting real estate if you like. I would have dumped the choil on the RIMOR. probably I think the Dobermann IV is more comfortable to use in the reverse safety grip if that's something u do when using a knife. Rimor has a straight beveled edge whilst the D4 has a convex grind. No recurve of course on the Dobermann IV either, or rather it is a very shallow recurve, not straight but not s pronounced as the Rimor. Hope that all helps!

However, it is about $380 USD, which puts it higher than some handmade knives like Busse, WC, and LT Wright here in the US. I like that your field tests are not just batoning and feathersticking. • @BushCampingTools

    @BushCampingTools

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hi the tang is hidden but believe me, their tang designs are more than adequate for a serious beating. At 6mm thick it is a kind of triangular taper to the rear, it's not a symmetrical design, so it's hard to describe but give me about 30 minutes and i'll post an image of a tang on the facebook page, so you can see it. This is one of my favorite knives and is of excellent design. The fact that the anchoring bolt is well away from the ilt also makes this type of tang less likely to fail under a bending moment as there are no holes close to where large bending forces could occur (if one decided to use their knife as a lever LOL). OK let me take some pics. In the mean time you might want to check 9if you haven't already) my vid where I modify one of their knives, the Fulcrum S (I wanted a K9 but they stopped production, so I removed the upper guard so it now looks a bit like the old K9 of theirs, which BTW I think was a great knife, oh well.

Also I didn't end up buying it. Maybe if I go back to the store and check it out again. Bang for (my) buck, it also seems a bit too high price?? But that is totally personal op and not based on any review. To be honest I reckon at a fraction of the cost, that Muela Rhino, with a good tip and 14C28N Sandvik steel-seriously I can't fault it-not some marketing BS, is going to be more practical at least for me. Anyway just my thoughts at this instant. LOL!

    This is the perfect jungle knife! What's your opinion for a knife, at a completely different enviroment? Something like half and not so dence woods, half area with olive trees and some pine trees here and there. Hot climate mainly with perfect weather most of the days of the year. What would be the perfect survival knife, for such a place?! Thanks in advance

  • @BushCampingTools

    @BushCampingTools

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi there, thanks for watching. Ok as you know olive wood, especially dead stuff is hard as. Pine the opposite. I'd be carrying a small saw for cutting of the large olive timber say 4-5cm and bigger, dry or green, the saw can handle anything on the pine. The knife for hacking off olive branches for meat skewers or the like could be anything with a 4-5mm thick blade anything thicker-it will be tough going I reckon. Dry weather all the time, no need for stainless blades unless fishing constantly and or hunting and being sloppy at cleaning the blades, so a 1095 or D2 or O1 tools steel type blade would be just great. D2 will give you some corrosion protection and as far as I know it isn't affected at all from pine sap and olive sap, I doubt it would be affected as well. For a survival knife (if I had to put a brand and model to mind straight away) in such environment, i'd go for the Kizlyar Supreme Survialist X (my one is AUS8 but u can get them in other steels, i think D2?) -t's not too thick, it's only 5mm, with the full tang. This knife has def proven itself tome i from the coast to the jungles. Why I mention it is because you can use the spine wedge to hack down/break small branches for tinder as in my experience olives and pine tend not to drop branches but will retain a lot of dead material on the main trunk at least that's what I've seen on wild olives in the Australian bush, they were usually scrubby too and not to big as were eaten by goats and cattle when desperately hungry. Hope that helps don't hesitate to ask away if it didn't or you have more questions.

    +Ministerfister Thanks for your "concern" But hardly the last second, from where I was, looking at it there was no chance of this thick branch (and i've cut thousands of them from that plant) suddenly snapping and cutting my leg off in the bush LOL. Plus as u might have noticed, if you noticed this, was the the ground is covered in dead vegetation, bark leaves etc so you have to continually change your position.

    It seems to me that this peculiar handle shape allow a backward grip of the hand with the index finger still secured around that step in order to use the knife as an axe.....don’t you?

  • @BushCampingTools

    @BushCampingTools

    3 жыл бұрын

    HI, THANKS FOR WATCHING. I'm not sure I understand you correctly here? Maybe this is what I understand from what you say. The shape not only prevents the handle twisting but allows ones fingers to securely grip around the cut out area near the guard region. The tapered back end also is ergonomic because it allows ones small finger and ring finger to close properly as our hands normally grip objects. This also means total security if one chooses to swing such a knife, you don't have to grip the daylights out of the handle because it fits the ergonomics of the hands very well. When I hold an axe I am relying upon the end of the axe handle being wider, not narrower and this large width will stop my hands (both hands though of course) from slippage but not rotation if a bad strike.

    Hi on this channel I never talk about the cost of the knives or any products for that matter, that I review. The reason is simply because the words "cost" and or "price" mean different things to different people and their associated values and or disposal income/s. My reviews are about the products and products only, based on my field experience of many years usage of knives during extensive camping, hunting and trekking activities around the globe. The choice wether to purchase a given product seen here is entirely up to the individuals own desires, not mine. Once again thanks for watching and commenting.

    I think a survival knife needs to be full tang. Since no one mention this fact, I assume it is not.

  • @BushCampingTools

    @BushCampingTools

    25 күн бұрын

    Hi, thanks for watching and commenting. No this knife is more than strong enough because the width and thickness of the tang is wide at the hilt and only tapers (but asymmetrically) towards the butt. I'm 66-67kg and can easily hang off it, not problems and it will not snap. I used a parang from a coconut farmer all over Indonesian archipelago as a "survival knife, eating cocnuts every day practically for 3 months, no problems and it wasn't a full tang if you mean the complete width of the blade. it is a marketing thing which convinces us to only consider full width tangs all the way until the butt end. This only makes for an overly heavy knife, In my experience.

    58HRC is hardness. It's about how easy you will sharp it. It have nothing to do with corrosion resistance!

  • @BushCampingTools

    @BushCampingTools

    2 жыл бұрын

    As I indicated before to you, the HRC for martensitic steels, this one in particular, N690, plays a crucial role in corrosion resistance if you don't believe what i wrote before please simply request the data from Böhler, , the technical department will tell you this. If you don't believe the metallurgists then I don't know what to say and we can no longer discuss this aspect of hardness and corrosion resistance in high chromium content martensitic stainless steels. certain HRC plays a role in how easy it is to sharpen for the harder it is the more time and higher grade abrasives needed to remove some metal. Personally, i have found HRC' under 60 are a lot easier and quicker to re sharpen then HRC values of 60 and above. I tried once to re grind a HRC 60 blade ad it was extremely time consuming and even at HRC58, this is still very very hard in real practical terms but many get hung up with having knives hardened to HRC60 and above, great but it comes with a price of taking longer to sharpen if foolishly left to go blunt.

    Many people ask this question. I film both in the Northern hemisphere and the southern hemisphere and attempt to show knives in the widest practically possible environments I can, so everyone can get a idea of how it performs, as some knives will do better or worse depending on the environment it was originally designed (if it was at all) designed for. I live in the northern hemisphere but the review was conducted in Australia

    Say Heah, Now I really like that Doberman 4, Aces, Joe. This weekend I took my Rodent Rucki and my Ratmandu teamed it with some other gear just to see if I can utilize carrying all that gear, I took a Comanche Single Shot .410/.45 Colt Pistol in a M-1 Canvas Sheath that fits it perfectly. Yeah, I tested it over this weekend, Infact we going home in the morning. But I had to change my Piggyback Carry with my Rodent 7 and my Rodent 4 to my 7 and 3, It did reduced the weight alittle, But I still Baldric Carry it. I also put together my Rodent 9 with the Rodent 4, This way the knife proportion s where closer to the same. I'm also doing that with my Busse Combat Ergo Series, My Badger Attack Ergo and my Steel Heart Ergo and my Ergo Battle Mistress. I'll make a Piggyback but exchange which combo to carry. But Yeah, I really like that MDobermann 4 Thanx You, for sharing it. ,, .

    LOL! Well that depends upon whether you got the jump on the Grizzly before it got the jump on you LOL! But seriously, the best weapon against the grizzly bear (or any bear for that matter) are your ears and eyes! in other words don't get caught out being negligent in bear country. As an ozzy we don't have them but one when living overseas in a country which doe have wild bears, we rode mountain bikes will bells attached. It really annoyed hunters we came across but that was ok since they were hunters and not bears LOL! It's a great knife and I have no problems being stuck on a deserted island with one and a good fishing rod and a bunch of lures, I'll be good to go!
