Extracting oil from walnuts. The Soxhlet extractor 🌰⚗️🥜

Ғылым және технология

#walnuts #chemistry #fattyoil
Hello there¡¡¡ This time I am extracting oil from walnuts using a Soxhlet extractor. Remember it is not recomendable to use or eat the extracts when using glassware which has been in contact with other numerous chemichals; and also by using hexane as solvent. I use it because I want to share with you my extraction process and also to have a small sample of walnut oil. The other portion of it will be used in another video.

    7 жыл бұрын

    Well. The amount of solvent used depends on your soxhlet extractor. If it is 100ml apparatus you will need 100ml or a bit more. Mine is 250ml so I had to use like 275-300ml aprox. Is not essential. What I meant to say is that the Soxhlet extractor is very efficient in how many sovent do you use, compared with other techniches... Imagine using fresh solvent with each extraction... An 10 cycles extraction in a 250ml soxhlet extractor doesnt need the equivalent 2,5 liter of hexane if you dont use the soxhlet (dont know if you follow me :S ).

    How might I get a better idea of which solvents are best for a particular extraction? For example, demonstration of extracting capsaicin from peppers calls for ethanol, while extraction of essential lemon oils uses steam, and extraction of walnut oil calls for hexane. How would I know which to use? Thank you.

  • @Glattuh

    @Glattuh

    3 жыл бұрын

    It depend on what do you want to extract and with which technique basically. You can also extract capsaicin using hexane for example, and extracting fatty oils using petroleum ether. Generally there are a full list of well known and very used solvents. You then have to know their properties and compare them to the compound/compounds you want to extract. For example, for extracting the anthocyanins, watching the molecule itself tells us that probably just ethanol is quite a good solvent for that extraction :D

What should be the level of purity of the N-Hexane? and what grade it should be in order to be safe to consume? 3. What other solvents can be used beside N-Hexane? 4. Would it be possible to use Ethanol in this method instead of N-Hexane? 5. Is it possible to extract oil from spices that have very low fat content such as turmeric?

  • @Glattuh

    @Glattuh

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi thanks for commenting and asking. Let me see: 1. Chemically there is no difference, same molecule. The N stands for normal and means that the alkane is linear, or in other words, non ramificated. I believe there are solvents sold as hexane which contains a mixture of its isomers. 2. Ideally it should be food grade solvent. That ensures its purity for this purposes. 3. All that are non polar such heptane, compressed butane even. 4. No. Ethanol will dissolve the lipidic fraction of the material but more things too. Ethanol is a protic polar solvent, for lipidic fractions nonpolar solvents are the best choice. 5. Yes! But turmeric is more suitable to be used in extractions for its flavour compounds rather than the oil (lipidic fraction). Do not mistake oil with essential oil, they are not the same. With that being said, remember doing this experiment is not meant to encourage people to eat it afterwards, just a demonstration on how the soxhlet works. Bests, Glattuh from NOOH

    I could not measure the temperature in the extraction cylinder but its normally high, something between 60C and the boiling point of the solvent probably. Efficiency is always higher when the temperature increase, but think even if it is low, the soxhlet extractor allows you to do as many cycles as you want so in theory you could always get high yields. I cant say at what temperature the extraction is higher just because it depends on what you are extravting, the solvent and other things. Thanks for commenting :D

    As far as I can tell hexane is safe to use as an extraction solvent for food as long as care is taken to use glassware that isn't contaminated and you make sure to boil off any remaining solvent. Is there something that I'm missing that would make the resulting oil dangerous to consume?

  • @Kloashut

    @Kloashut

    It aint always easy to boil off the last traces of solvent nor is it always the best option [thermal decomposition of extract], however applying vacuum could help. I have no personal experience with extracting walnut oil but looking at the msds information, hexane wouldnt my first choice especially if food grade ethanol would do. If you defenitely would need a more apolair solvent and have access to a safe working space & setup I'd prefer butane over hexane healthwise. When in doubt what solvents/chemicals to youse, do check msds from major companies/institutes and compare them objectively.

    When I worked in a laboratory it was always advised NOT to use hexane unless it is absolutely necessary. A good alternative is n-Heptane, which has almost the same chemical properties but is far less toxic. Another is cyclohexane. Nethertheless I am sure that completely safe solvents like ethanol and ether would work too even if solubility isnt optimal. Soxhlet extractors can make a lot of solvents get to work.

Of course one is not completely sure if hexane has been removed from the oil but the ammount of it remaining in the oil should be minimmun to null after heating the mixture above of its boiling point. I dont remember very well but I think it was at about 120C for a few minutes while filming so yeah, it is expected all of the hexane has been removed after that. On the other hand I have found that n-hexane is a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval solvent for edibles. Many things we eat has been extracted with hexane, such many other oils (soy for example). Anyway is not good idea to use any produced or chemichal treated products made in the lab. here is some information from internet. Like their essential oil counterparts, absolutes are highly aromatic liquids extracted from plants. Absolutes, however, are extracted in a complex manner that requires the use of chemical solvents that are later removed during the final stages of production. A trace amount of the solvent, however, can remain in the final aromatic absolute. Although the amount of remaining solvent is considered tiny in carefully extracted absolutes, steam distilled essential oils are preferred within the scope of holistic aromatherapy. Having said that, absolutes do hold their place within holistic aromatherapy and natural fragrancing applications. As with steam distilled essential oils, absolutes must be used with care, respect and knowledge. While essential oils can offer great benefit when taken internally by those properly educated in the internal application of steam distilled essential oils, absolutes are generally avoided for internal use because of the trace solvent they contain.

I do some reasearch and yes, i could find that absolutes needs to be extracted and not steam distilled but I think i cant help you anymore. There is nothing I could find in my language for that, and for me it looks pretty much as EO, with the only difference they are more "contaminated" with many other compounds. I saw absolutes are more colorful, as I said, due to colorants and other compounds in the plants, for example carotenes. Anyway Im pretty sure you can use this method to produce absolutes yes. What I dont really know is which plant material, solvent and corresponding procedure can be used.

    You warn not to eat the oil due to the resudual of hexane. It gets me wondering how olive oil could be considered organic if it's got residual solvents in it, such as hexane. Can you show us other extraction processes where the oil will be safe for human consumption?

    Hi¡¡¡ First of all, let me thank you for all the comments in the videos, it means a lot¡ About the oils, yes I can ahaha. Many oils we consume are extracted using hexane, as it is aproved by the FDA (Class II solvent which means it can be used but it has inherent toxicity) as a safe solvent for extracting fats and lipidic contents. Even though it is considered to be safe used as solvent, it is indeed a bit dangerous. It is quite volatile and so it is flammable but, when inhaled, it can produce some neurological diseases with time. I am not too expert in metabolisis of this things when they enter the human body, I just, as a chemist, read the security and danger phrases. I often think why it is aproved by the FDA being so dangerous. With that being said, I could eat my oil without noticing any danger as probably and as I said, many things we eat in our everyday consuming may have been in touch with hexane. But there is something which is key and is the next: Just compare a industrial standarized method, with all the research that entails, animal tests, studies and so on... with my amateur and more lablike method of extraction.... It probably dont differ so much but it is still me extracting this in my home.... I guess you understand now haha. I have no guarantee that I dont have hexane left in my oil. Maybe I can speak with the university to see if I can perform some analysis and see if it is some hexane left, but thats another serious project ahaha. I can only thing now in other extraction method and it is called cold pressing. It just consists in applying pressure to the material and getting the oil out of it. Not so much efficient as the chemichal method but much safer and cheap I guess. Thanks for commeting ;D

    Edit, n-Hexane is not approved by the FDA as a safe solvent but it is know that, due to its high volatility, no residues are found in extracts after removing the solvent. Because of that it is used in quite a lot of things, but mainly in seed oil extraction.

    First of all... thanks for commenting!! Actually I just uploaded the last video with subtitles. I bought a good microphone and so I will be doing voiceovers for the next videos from now!!! Not many people knows this by this time so feel lucky (along with the people reding this comment hheh). I decided to start giving some voice because of that exact thing you said. In adition I am feeling like I need to give you my viewers so much information that it is no longer viable to write. Also I loss lots of time arranging the subtitles for each video so... Voice is coming :D

    Although it is aproved by the FDA, it is not guarantied if you use it in lab conditions and so. Hexane is mich more harmful than heptane. On the other hand I wont recommend eating any thing produced in the lab, even if you just use ethanol or water because glassware and the place where you work has touched lots of diferent chemichals. In the industry hexane is removed completely I guess by other techniques so... Its just diferent!

    @@patriciaantoinettesantos4133 It is not better. They are different processes for different compounds. Do not confuse essential oils with fatty oils. Walnuts and many other seeds have high content in fatty oils, which whom we cook and fry things. Essential oils are much more expensive and volatile and are used for perfumes. So: Essential oils -> Steam distillation Fatty oils -> Extraction with solvent or cold pressing

    Hi¡¡ I didnt know about that exotic fruit but after a quick research, yes, it can be used to extract the oil from the seeds. Just one observation I made, better try to let the seeds dry a little bit as I guess the fruit has very high water content, in order to have a better extraction performance :D

    Nation Of Our Hobbies thank you! :) And by the way, since we are students and our facility doesn’t have a soxhlet extractor, do you think boiling the seeds and the hexane together in a flask would be effective? Then after that just filtrate it and use the distillation apparatus to separate hexane from the oil? Also, what is the ideal number of extraction cycles? Is it also 6?

Rotovaps use motion and vacuum to accelerate the elimination and recovery of the solvent. How did you perform the experiment so?

    The use of a Soxhlet top for extracting the goodies is senseless, I'm afraid. You use a Soxhlet if you want to extract some unwanted byproduct, e.g. fat, from a heat-sensitive material.
