I have these on a lot of large undercarriage bolts on my car. It's a hassle having to buy new sockets, and finding impact sockets was almost impossible, but the ease of mind, being able to just go crazy with the impact or breaker bar with no worries of rounding off the fastener, is great. I'll also add that I only got three sockets. E14, E16 and E18. Those are the high toque bolts for my car. I have some smaller sizes, but since they don't bear very much load, a regular 12 point or 6 point will work perfectly.

Torx bits are great too. For small bolts and screws you can use flat head , which is terrible because it slips. You can also use Philips but there are only a few sizes, like 4 or something so it doesn't maximum the size of the hole compared to the bolt. With torx you get more grip and there are more sizes.

I bought a Mercedes-Benz a couple years ago now. It's my first experience with torx. And I honestly love it! And in a pinch if you need to remove a pulley or something, my 12 point sockets work very well on em too like you said. Although I did buy torx/E-torx sockets also. Some people hate em, but I've had a very good experience with torx fasteners!

Thank you for a brilliant explanation. I have never even seen an etorx bolt but I now feel aggrieved that any other type of bolt exists. I enjoyed my contentment while it lasted.

Nice video and explanation. You can use those "universal" or spline sockets too. there are some companies that make e-torx wrenches which are very nice to have, but they don't come cheap. As you mentioned, it is really best to get the proper tools for these fasteners, especially if you know you be dealing with them in advance. Even if you do get the fastener out, the damage might be enough to require a replacement, which will also not be an easy task.

Great video you managed to answer the one question i've been scouring the internet for which is why certain sockets don't seat properly.

There actually is a need for shallow chamfered E-torx sockets as such E-torx fasteners do exist, just less common.

Great discussion, I also wondered about these fasteners as I have them on the brake calipers of my Honda VTR1000F.

I have used e-torx sockets to get worn out hex bolts out, you can use a hammer to get the socket into the bolt and you'll be able to apply a lot of torque to it, probably even more than with the right socket.

I'm not a fan of these fasteners in under vehicle applications. Here in the rust belt, the sharp edges corrode off quickly. Also you didn't mention about Torx and the 'new and improved' Torx Plus.

Yes that's a little of my problem right now and it ain't fun I don't know if I should reuse the e torx screw or go with other ones what would help keep them from rusting up is like a heat oil resistant rubber cap over each screw head but no one makes those

The edges rounding off has been my experience exactly. Even with quality sockets that have a proper chamfer, and ensuring I apply forward pressure, I've rounded off e-torx bolts. I've come to call them "external Phillips." What can I say? This is what happens when the focus is on the convenience of the manufacturer rather than the consumer or mechanic.

@@mattruth7109 how do you remove them. I got one that stripped between the engine and fire wall. No way to put a grinder or Dremel so in kinda screwed lol. I'm hoping a set of socker extractors will work. Just want to see your input before messing the bolt up some more

I work at a jeep only salvage yard and they use e12 torx on almost all bellhousing bolts. Its amazing how many people round them off servicing the clutch rather than buying the correct socket. Have to slam my e12 on with a hammer sometimes.

I bought a e type socket for my car and it still rounded it, I don't know why they use those dumb sockets, probably to make you spend more money on tools but its annoying. I'm just taking to take seats out to clean underneath and they have something so hard for a piece that is taken out alot for cleaning or repairs. Thanks mazda

I have all sizes in shallow and deep 4 to 24 ...only used them twice in 20 years

socket head uses a smaller profile for counter bores (e-torx is not an alternative for counter bore fastener installations. The E-Torx although less than a Hex-head will require a larger external socket than socket head. I totally agree using powered drivers, this head design is better getting on and off and providing better engagement.

I would also mention the External Torx PLUS bolts. Different socket set for those

I have a mercedes that I work on myself and I'm trying to figure out why etorx is so cool. The sockets always seems to not fit the bolt itself... it either seems too small and does not reach the bottom or it seems to have too much play on the size up. Is the larger fully seated socket with play acceptable with etorx? With hex bolts there is never any question.

I've taken lots of motors and interiors apart and can't recall if I've ever run into one of these. I'm really racking my brain. I have a small row of these socket bits in an 80 piece set I recently bought. Trying to think of a single place these are used, from a manufacturer- specifically and where...

2007 pontiac g5 wheel cylinder bolts.

I think it's stupid that they didn't follow the metric sizing with these "e" bolt numbers. Thread or head size could have been an option as well. Or maybe I am the stupid one. Is there any good reason they went this way?

if youre a small engine guy; they have nice quality sets on amazon. don't buy the first kit you see scan down a few pages. i got a E4-E20 plus all the reg torx sockets 1/4,3/8,1/2" drives and bits for $10 in a case. again small engine equip we aren't torqing the shit out of stuff. its pittsburg tool quality; plenty good for saws snowblowers and such hoonda and briggs is using these alot now

If you use a six point on an external store bolt that is torqued tight on a car suspension, the socket will strip and damage the bolt. Ask me how I know. I now have three sets of external etorx socket sets to fit all of the fasteners on the two German cars we own.

Why would one need a deep-well E-Torx socket if all you need them for is bolt heads? Couldn't you get by with a shallow set and a set of extensions?

tbh I hate Etorx eventough you have great explanation it waste a lot of my time just to replace water pump damn a job that suppose to be 20minutes became 3hours smh

I really enjoyed the conversation on E-Torx. But l do believe that this is just another way for the manufacturers to see more tooling accessories and use less materials and cheapen the process. Nothing more nothing less. Also, one more way to keep the average person from working on anything these days. VF

Get grey pneumatic. They make 1/4,3/8, and 1/2 sets. I have them all. There great.

I don't like the e torx ones in mower transaxle transmissions they're stubborn to come out of those tight places then some are a bit stripped so now I might have to buy more tools

Do you remember the "metrinch" claim? They said that the walls do the gripping as opposed to the corners ? Their sockets and wrenches still had corners and that to this day still bothers me.

Snap-On just announced new flank drive plus which is basically the same thing... tighter tolerance sockets would make special fluting or geometry irrelevant as they would grip then entire surface from middle to edge... yep that means all your old snap-on sockets and wrenches are useless and have to be entirely replaced full truck prices... :)

I have that metrinch set and I love it. Been using it for about 25 years now. It works on both metric and standard. Doesn’t matter. Now I’m curious if the metrinch sockets will work on etorx. I will have to find a bolt and try it out. My daughter’s chevy cruise has a lot of etorx bolts. Great great video by the way catus. I was kinda annoyed by etorx but you’ve given a whole new perspective on them that I never thought about. Very well done. Thanks and keep up the great videos.

In case they are recessed and there is not enough room to use a standard socket with an extension.

@@sfx1999 precisely....although I've rarely come across that situation, and was able to get by it by using a smaller drive size (E12 in 1/4 drive versus E12 in 3/8 drive), or using a wobble to avoid the obstruction.

That isn't good how that icon etorx doesn't seat fully on the head of that etorx bolt you had there. Hopefully icon/harbor freight is aware of this.

The Pittsburgh e-torx sockets have been like this since forever. They're junk and you can't really use them in high-torque applications (which e-torx is commonly used for).

Though much less common, there are shallow headed E-torx fasteners in the automotive sector. ...but they should be marked as such for identification, which HF/Icon hasn't....whether HF is aware of it is another matter.

I know I might have already fucked up the screw heads that's why i didn't buy those cheaper tools from there cause they'll either crack or slip around the head more and I can't chance that with cheap tools

Yeah a 12 point 15 mm wrench will work besides the external torque 18

What's the trick to getting one of these buggers loose when it gets rounded? We tried going down a socket size, extractor sockets.. Nothing grips the jello mold shaped nub.

A 'ton' and a 'bunch'. For these reasons, I'm in.

Not recommend but it you are using a non E Torx socket on a torx fastener, spline sockets are your second best option not any of the other options.

If your spline-drive wrench/socket isn't fully seated squarely, you'll marr up the E-torx fastener pretty good, along with a greater likelyhood of getting the tool stuck onto the fastener. The same could be said for 6pt/12pt sockets/wrenches, but I've found they are less likely to get stuck. YRMV.

Hex doesn't work on torx it'll strip the heads i done it might feel like it's on tight over it but its really not and it slips hope i didn't ruin mine to bad maybe a 6 will get them loose it just stripped the tip ends of the heads so all i can do is wait I'm not gonna buy no cheap tools

Dont be a cheap bastard, get an e-torx socket set, or buy them individually, eg an e14 socket in 1/2 " is about 4eur. But i didnt use one and broke 2 out of 3 bolts in my turbo. Mechanic to take the turbo out and machinist to get the broken bolts out cost me 500eur...

To replace the starter on my BMW, it required 2 etorx screws to be removed, accept they were put in from the back of the bell housing facing forward and they were right up against the firewall and a etorx socket would not fit. 🤬 Luckily I discovered that the box end of a craftsman universal 3/8 swivel wrench fit perfectly and it worked like a charm. Every other damn bolt on the car was metric accept for these POS’s 😂

That's how this transaxle transmission is I'm doing all the screws are upside down when they all should be at the top not underneath them being underneath the heads of each screw will rot out faster

I hate E-Torx and torx in general.. solution looking for a problem

I kind of thought that too, but torx may be the best drive ever invented for higher torque screws. I thought square drives were fine, but torx are enough better that over time I think square drives might be eliminated. Phillips drive have some advantages in lower torque applications so I don't see Torx ever eliminating phillips heads for things like smaller dry wall screws.

These things are evil. Run into one broke down on the side of the road, you're gonna round it off unless you have this random specialty socket in your roadside tool kit.

Im not gonna look at your videos no more your tools are all brand new and you dont do repair videos i cant take advice from you and im not im un subscibing Next......

That's a terrible metric to judge someone by. Regardless of what he does, he's presenting information the guys who turn wrenches on KZread don't. You take all the information and you've got a better picture. The people who feel like only professional mechanics deserve an opinion are tools themselves, just not very useful ones. I don't know what he does, but he presents very well. He covers a huge variety of brands as well, not just the normal truck tools or gw/tekton. I'm sure he's got a serious collection, almost seems like a compulsion at times. Anyways, I wish more tool guys presented like he did, he's top notch in his reviews if you're actually interested in seeing the guts of what you buy.
