EXPRESS Trains | MUMBAI - PUNE | BHOR Ghats | Indian Railways -1
Enjoy watching the Express Trains through the heavenly Bhor Ghats in the peak Monsoon with a wide variety of Diesel and Electric Locomotives making this place a paradise for Rail Enthusiasts. Bhor Ghat is a mountain pass located between Karjat (KJT) and Khandala (KAD) along the railway line between Karjat and Lonavala in Mumbai - Pune route Located in Sahyadri Hills or Western Ghats of the Maharashtra State. The train climbs 566 meters in total 28 kms. Its having a ruling gradient of 1:37 that means for every 37 meters run there is a rise of 1 meter. Famous hill stations like Khandala and Lonavla are in this route, its one of the most scenic and green route to travel during monsoons.

The Bhore Ghats comprise of 3 tracks. The 1st track is for traffic going from KJT - KAD towards Pune, the 2nd track is bi-directional meant for two way traffic and the 3rd track , the oldest alignment is for traffic coming from KAD-KJT towards Mumbai/Kalyan.
All the UP Hill Trains towards Pune are attached with Bankers at the rear end of the Train (Locomotives help the train climb up the gradient) while the Down Hill Freight trains are attached with extra locomotives for additional Braking.Index of Trains captured :

I used to travel in these ghata back in my childhood, Kanyakumari express, from Mumbai to Kanyakumari. Kalyan electric locomotives were my absolute favourites. The screaming generator sounds were such an eargasm.

I have traveled these ghats since my childhood days (1977 onwards), then they used to change the diesel loco at poona and attach an electric WCM-1/2/3 for descending the bhor ghats and vice-versa while coming from bombay to hyderabad , i remember sometimes bankers were added even while descending the ghats.the bankers were WCG series engines , they were really beautiful. Beyond poona towards hyderabad we could see only diesel and steam loco action Looking down into the kathaldhara valley and its thick jungle was probably the most beautiful sight i have ever seen

Bankers are attached if the train is Going high up to push the train Deccan express uses the Karjat route and does not have bankers

Bro all the trains going south have diesel engines only. They are slowly getting electrifiied now.

@@mihirnayak6717 no not all trains towards south are diesel. They have diesel as they have a high pulling force. Also the bankers are attached as an suppliment for climbing the hill. South side also has electrified tracks but they are more hills there so Indian railways use Diesel locomotives.

Fantastic! Done painstakingly.Two clarifications please. Why a large number of trains are hauled by diesel locos -WDMs and NOT by AC traction locos -WAPs? Are all the AC locos are always used as bankers at all times? Are there shortage of AC locos? It is a colossal waste of oil where on the electrified lines-especially between Mumbai and PUNE- diesel locos WDMs are used instead of AC locos WAPs. Why 2-3 bankers for one train at times? Why some strikings are seen on this comment after it is saved to be sent?

Previously it was only DC and was converted to DC + AC , Now there are no more DC locomotives all are converted to AC.
