I remember in Amway when I had a couple sit down so my "mentors" could show them the plan. The husband asked "so where does the money that we spend go?" and my mentor said "it gets shared amongst all of us" - Somehow I didn't catch that until after I left.

Recruiting people to sell for you is a way to create your own competition. This is hilarious when you also consider that people in MLM often bring up how "selective" they are with who they work with, or how "1 out of 10 people will say yes to the opportunity." So logically they should have an even smaller pool of people to pitch that dwindles exponentially as time goes on.

  • @anons000

Not necessarily. Many recruits in direct sells are the appointment setters and those who train them are the closers. Marco is mostly correct but there are in fact still direct sellers who are successful.

@@anons000 MLM companies use the term direct selling to mask the fact that recruitment is the real goal. The products come second to the opportunity. Also, *how* do you know that someone is successful when they haven’t disclosed what they spent on books, trips, event tickets, etc.?

It isn't anymore but the idea was legitimate back in the days before mass media and the internet: you leverage social networks to market a product. This works really well where the product in question is better marketed through social networks rather than via more impersonal adverts in newspapers, radio and TV (Tupperware and cosmetics for example). 1) You "salesperson" holds Tupperware parties to directly market and sell your product to their social network - this is much more effective marketing that is low cost to you - the company. 2) You also utilise your salesperson to expand your sales force by recruiting their friends - the "upstream" acts as an incentive and a reward to your salesperson for expanding your business. This is also much lower cost than you (as a company) manually expanding the business. 3) This form of network based marketing has significantly lower costs to you as the actual business owner as you don't need to have massive warehouses and brick and mortar storefronts everywhere, as your "salesforce" works out of their own houses and don't require extensive logistics to market your products. But yeah, today they are pretty much unviable business models.

He kept the positive mental attitude posture and kept trying to deflect by dancing around my direct questions. If we keep expanding and adding more teams and yall have already been at this for 3 years to start with how long until we run out of people to talk to and then what? There was never a good answer to that one. And even my manager conceded he sometimes thought about that himself.

These groups brainwash with their live and online training meetings giving you the illusion that you can make “a fortune of a lifetime” and then you invest more time and money into marketing materials and talking to people when deep down you know that this isn’t a sustainable way to make income but “don’t give up! Keep going” the ‘mentors’ will say.

I was a lifeguard for a private pool birthday party a couple weeks ago for a bunch of rich families celebrating their daughter’s birthday and I noticed one of the dads had the primerica logo TATTOOED on his back. I thought that was weird but what was weirder was the fact when the daughter of the dad was about to go down the slide (she looked no older than 4) she randomly said “We love people more than anything.” in almost an automated cult like tone. I was on edge the rest of my shift and researched primerica after I got off work and found this channel, keep up the good work Marco!

I asked about it because my daughter needed a new job. I knew something was up when she told me to PM her about it. when I asked her who she worked for, she gave me such vague answers. I finally figured it what it was by looking up her FB profile. It was one of those diet MLM's.

It actually made me laugh, thinking about how ludicrous it is to consider murderers changing their name to something that seems justifiable such as “Life Status Changers” just to allow infiltration into acceptance. Great analogy. I think that is the part that will help those on the fence the most with the way you related it to a real life example.

It seems to me that MLM, although outdated for FMCG, may (!) only make sense for specialized services, as long as it does not involve an initial fee, although in the long term the MLM structure must be getting lower (flat) to remain profitable. What do You think?

Romanian here & PhD student. There's no "profitability" going on no matter how you look at it. The products are overpriced for their quality level. Let's take Avon which people are selling now in tiny self-made shops in Ro. The recruiting is just not really happening anymore due to market saturation and also the person to person sale is not happening anymore due to those shops existing. The majority of the sales of the Avon shops are bath foam, one of their lipstick lines and nail polish. All the make up is too expensive for the quality. You get the same quality as the cheapest brand in DM (the german shop line) for the price of L'Oreal which has a much better quality. The face cream used to be as expensive as Avene. Of course I will buy Avene and not Avon because it is much better and it's a French brand. Regarding services MLM, Romania was flooded by OVB Allfinanz. They are recruiting like crazy, but for how long will they be? I see them choosing only high school graduates/Bachelor degree dropouts. But on what can they compete with that? For optional pension fund, there was an offer from my workplace, NN (large established pension fund) came, they presented their offer, our workplace offered to add money on top of what we would like to pay to our pension fund. Everyone took that offer. So no way of competing on pensions. I switched jobs, my new workplace pays me a life insurance from Erste Group. So there's no competition possible on life insurances. Poor people don't buy such luxuries, well paid people get it as a work benefit. The only things left are car insurances and house insurances and here the majority of the people just pick the cheapeast which MLMs can't offer due to their need to make commisions. Both Avon and Oriflame are having financial issues, so becoming flat without improving the products or decreasing the prices is not the path to profitability.

My crosslines were pressuring me into idolizing the diamonds and emeralds in Amway. Also the team I was in had headquarters where they all live together and go to meetings together also staying up listening to motivational audios all night. MLM organizations are based on the traditional system of patronage. Instead of finding out who is easily convinced that they are the star, IBOs are credit worthy patrons who find customers with a need for such products which those clients can choose to retail as a service provider with a respectively high potential in regards to revenue and marketability. After sales increase from such clients and the promotional tiers of achievement are accessed and recruitment of your customer base begins. That is MLM and direct sales as it pertains to the patronizing efforts of these organizations.

Hey I’ve been in direct sales for the last 3 years. Typically the only successful direct selling roles that are viable are services people need. I was specifically selling solar panel systems (energy). But I know people who do well in pest control and cable. Granted, these are legit direct sales roles. There’s really no aspect of recruiting in the jobs functions. I haven’t recruited anyone in my 3.5 years at the solar company I’m at. Of course if you recruit someone who comes in and does well that helps boost your career similar to any job. A lot of these roles come with a base salary + commission. another key differentiator is that you’re not paying to “join the job” similar to how you see with Herbalife, IM academy, etc. Versus having a salary + commission Edit: I’m glad you cleared up that MLM’s are not direct sales. I agree that direct sales is a dying profession because of the advent of Amazon and online shopping. However, there’s many people making a lot of money in door to door sales. You should research it, might make for an interesting video

The craziest thing ever is the people hardcore fighting for its defense despite the fact they are still low enough that they are not making any profits. It's such potent mind control for the dumbest shit known to man.

Hey Marco. And anyone who keeps up with this stuff … I work in a union job. And the other day someone told me that’s unions are also pyramid schemes and I’m lost on that. I feel like that guy is … not bright. That also just doesn’t make sense to me. Can I get some … other insight to this ?? Thank you.

Union’s aren’t perfect(Corruption from the top of union board, depending on who’s leading) but its not a pyramid scheme.

Nope there is not! Use to be with 2 of the tops distributors in Herbalife when their sports supplements were coming out 2 brothers both had houses in Pelican Hill Newport Beach Cali. 1 brother lived 2 doors down from Kobe Bryant. Overlooking Newport Beach and PCH 18k sq ft home. $30million dollars They told everyone they did it from the ground up only to find out his wife opened the market in Japan with her contacts in government. They did nothing from the ground up and ended up on Netflix in a documentary on deceptive marketing practices I know for a fact its a cheap way to advertise “word of mouth” marketing knowing only .05% only make $500 year. They didnt have to pay anyone to blow their brand up and spend minimal amounts on marketing
