Exposing Furry SCAMMERS on Etsy

Ойын-сауық

Etsy has become home for a lot of Furry art scams lately that use AI to create characters and adopts and sell them. We're exposing the worst ones on the site that are a huge detriment to the furry fandom. They offer "commissions" that are just generated images that they often don't even disclose are AI.
My name's Nightzy and I post all kinds of fursuiting videos of the furry fandom. I hope to bring more fun and art to this amazing community :)

@@ZackC I used to do it that way when I was taking coms before I really should have been. I didn't realize what was bad about it, especially since I still had flat color palette squares included on the ref sheet so people could sample from the squares. I get why a lot of artists make this mistake. It's not a tip I've ever seen come up in art advice videos for example.

I’ve seen some of these Ai shops have reviews like “such beautiful art” 💀😭😭 these sellers don’t value art or the community they’re selling to Edit: I’ve noticed some Ai shops hv little videos like, ”tired of boring adopts? AI can’t make art. All it can do is make images based on art. The only place I could potentially see AI images having in this fandom is helping new furries get their fursona out of their head so that an actual artist can draw it, and even that can be problematic, especially when models are overtrained (when the AI learns how to replicate images too well and starts spitting out the training data).

@@Jason-zg4sdAbsolutely. Especially if you struggle with picturing landscapes. I have aphantasia , so I can't see things in my mind. I rely on reference. I've used AI a few times to get the feel of a background and then trace over it to fix it up and render it in my actual style. It's all just reference then, just like I would any photos online. AI for artists could be a great help in references as a tool, but we have to have some rules around it like having ethical sources for training these engines (royalty-free images and things that the companies have gotten explicit permission/paid to use). I used a generator to get a futuristic hallway in a specific fantasy-esque style, and it took a while to get a composition I liked. But, once I got it, it was a great help in designing a scene for an animation I'm working on. :) Landscape compositions are some of the hardest for me to get, but industrial composition (bedrooms, halls, house layouts, etc.) have always been a struggle. So, having something help with that to allow me to get my work done faster and with less energy is always nice. The final product is still entirely my lines, my rendering skills, and my artistic skill...but the AI definitely eased the mental process.

Make a well in the center and pour in the milk, egg and melted butter; mix until smooth. Step 2 Heat a lightly oiled griddle or frying pan over medium-high heat. Pour or scoop the batter onto the griddle, using approximately 1/4 cup for each pancake. Brown on both sides and serve hot. Enjoy!

My take on Ai media generation: It is a great tool to ease communication between artists and clients if there is no previous material like a ref sheet yet. It can take out the (sometimes) hours spend searching through other characters to find an example of the change that you will like to add to the characters because the client might lack the words that would help the artist understand. Ai generated Media should not be allowed to be sold. Using it to assist a person is a greyzone but you even there you are technically using someone elses experience to get yourself started.... not sure what my position on that is yet.

I agree with this. With client/artist communication, it would definitely help with that. So long as the image is used as reference and not part of the actual final product, AI images are usually accepted as a tool. I know a lot of artists who will use AI (myself included on the odd occasion) to get a reference for a specific feel, colour palette, composition, etc. for a project we're working on. But, it's used the same way as any photos we find online: as reference only. That is how it can be ethically used. Many artists will even refer to other people's art if there's a specific element they like (pose, clothing style, etc.). So long as the AI image is not part of the actual final product, it's fine. I've used AI to come up with a style of futuristic-fantasy hallway that looks cold and shiny. It took a while to get a style I liked, and with that, I was able to use that as a reference to draw out my backgrounds for an animation I'm working on. It looks nothing like the original image in terms of the end product, but it definitely helped ease the process and mental drain of coming up with a composition and style when the main project is supposed to be the animation. I've seen some people use AI images as the actual backgrounds, which I would say is an absolute NO. So long as what is in the final image/animation is your work with your skills, your rendering, your lines, etc., then it's safe to use as reference. I'm sorry if I repeated myself a little. I hope I was able to explain my view clearly. :) I hope you have a wonderful day.

And the AI messed up so bad, the fursuit standing behind the car is 20 feet tall and has some among us looking visor for eyes, and the headlights on the CRX look like they left the car out on a hot day in Arizona because they just melted. Honestly I would go to a convention if there was a car scene there. Also that protogen ref sheet is an absolute war crime.

Oh my god! finally someone brings this up, I used to sell adopts on Etsy and commissions! Every time I was on Etsy AI "art" was constantly being pushed into my feed. Seeing how much sells they were getting, and sometimes even how cheap they made them for such high quality art at first glance I felt like I needed to market my adopts for cheaper for something that took way more effort and time out of my day, I still have my shop on Etsy, but honestly I am so incredibly discouraged at this point, I have put my shop in vacation mode for about 2-3 months now, and I really don't know if I will come back because of this, I don't know if it is worth it anymore to keep on trying.

So at this amusement park my classmates went to, there’s a part of the park where you can look at artwork from students that won awards and prizes and I kid you not, they had AI generated art that won 1st place!!! It even said on the description that it was AI! It just really makes me sad to see that people put so much time and effort into something handmade but a literal computer can just boot something in a second that’s probably stolen from other artists and win an award. 😞😞😞

Also to the people who buy these AI characters, you LEGALLY CANT “own” these AI images. Under untied states law no AI image can be owned due to it not being a image crafted by an actual person. This really is sad. And I stand somewhere in the middle of this debate. On the one hoof, AI art is here to stay. No corking this genie, unless our sun fries all our technology in one heartbeat. Right now, it is learning and making mistakes. A year ago, it was really crude stuff. Next year, the decent sized flaws may become super rare. The year after, it may require a professional to judge Ai vs. organic. I also say that in the far future, people will look back at the times we are living in and have many things to say. Like with the crudeness of the AI art. It feels like that slim period in gaming when professional games were placing crude digital photos into their game as animated sprites. Its time was short lived, and things got way better. Right now, I say that this AI art is in virtual elementary school. It's a fascinating thing to play around with. And great for a no budget option towards art. But... people are paying for it? Because, on the other hoof, almost anyone can literally generate this learning/theft stuff for free. Make it virtual wallpaper. Go print it out for next to nothing. And no matter how good it gets; it should always remain as FREE artwork. The true touch of a great artist, documented in making real art, should only fetch more and more money vs. the touch of a machine that will be flooding the world that we all live in. But, for now, the 'not looking hard' flaws of AI shouldn't be fetching any prices at all. These people that are paying for this stuff should be sent e-mails on how to download free software so they can crank out all the flawed images to their hearts content. Being a writer, I have tried punching in my visions to a couple of these. They have, so far, failed 100% to even remotely meet any goals I have. The results are often interesting. But absolutely useless to me. Now, nearly every real commission that I have paid for is something I can be proud for. The real efforts put in by real artists is, hands down, worth paying for.

Especially when they charge A LOT of money for the fake art of the machine. I literally charge less than $100 for my animations and artworks in both 3D and 2D, and people still call it high, and then they buy the fake art for $500. one thing that can help spot ai is the fact that, for the few listings i saw, most of them limit themselves to creating new characters out of thin air rather than actually trying to make a commission with already existing characters. That's sadly one niche i happen to want to fall into: character design. The saddest part is that i understand the appeal of the style the AI images use. The style itself is niche in the furry fandom. Not many people really have it. And it's also nice looking (especially if pulled off by a real artist. See Ross Draws for an example of a similar style) So the AI bros flood in with that type of style that... Probably appeals to the more "normie" side of the fandom.

I mean, plenty of people still make legitimate art. The problem is that the people doing this AI stuff _aren't_ artists. They're people who are probably mild tech savvy who found a pretty obvious market to break into. They don't care about the art, they care about the money. AI art can be made quicker and sold at a lower price which, unfortunately, forces legitimate artists to drop their prices in order to compete with computers. A lot of people don't really care about the human element that makes art what it is. They just want a decent looking image at a cheap price, so they gravitate towards AI art sellers. It's unfortunate but until laws start to catch up surrounding the usage of AI, it's going to be something that a lot of people have to deal with. So those of us who _are_ interested in art that's actually made by a human are just going to have to be careful and really look into each artist that we choose to commission. That said, people should also be careful about going around accusing others of using AI. I have seen some legitimate artists get accused of using AI because someone saw something that looked slightly off and decided that the only explanation is that AI was used.

I decided to look up this shop & read through some of the reviews. This one was a response by one of the “artists” from RoboRender; “Hello Roan! Our art is hybrid art, we tell people all about it in our store's main page, but basically it is handcrafted art over Al made bases. A Combination of both Al and Human art. Our Al use is ethical though, as we use custom trained models and we even pay royalties to the artists that train them - something most competitors dont do as you may be well aware. (You may also notice our style is substantially different from those who just use regular Al). The name RoboRender is exactly because we make hybrid art, but as we said it is Al for the base and the rest handcrafted. A 3 stars review really hurts our store, and it also hurts that you gave it before talking to us first and just because you didnt read our description. Thank you Rui Carreira Lead Artist @ RoboRender” Idk how AI art can be “ethical” tho?
