EXPOSING FOR BACKGROUNDS USING ISO (EP.232)

Sometimes it makes sense to set your background exposure BEFORE you set your foreground or subject's/talent's exposure. Using ISO to do that also sometimes makes sense. In this episode I talk about the subject in a controlled environment and show examples.

It all makes sense. A lot of my decisions around ISO are also driven by the particular camera. Some cameras like M43s are best left at ISO 800 max due to possible unwanted sensor artifacts. We don’t all have the latest and greatest cameras. If possible, bring in more lighting.

Thanks for all this daily content. Always something to think about. Could you tell me where you got your Grey Card holder please? I assume it has a cover too? I've had a look on the web, but can find nothing similar.

Yep. It's called the Calibrite ColorChecker Folio Case and is designed to hold two of their targets. You can see it in this video: studio.kzread.infoaEVWZt8Uukg/edit Here's the link to the product on B&H: bhpho.to/3U9Rwc0

Helpful video, but note there's considerable spill from the fill light onto the background, so when you dial back the fill to recover the foreground exposure the background becomes noticeably darker.

Thanks for the post. It's actually the key that's affecting the BG and I acknowledge that in the video. The kicker light is in front of the BG so it isn't spilling on that at all. The kicker is set to a very low level but the key is a large source that is definitely hitting the book shelves but doesn't really reach the far background.

ISO isnt letting twice or fours times more "light into the sensor " its just boosting the signal electronically , like turning up the volume of a radio . Only way to do that is add more light or lower the shutter speed.

Thanks for the post. That's technically accurate and may have been a poor choice of words on my part (I usually do these in single takes), but really what I'm focused on regarding this topic is exposing for the background and stops. While ISO doesn't actually let 2 times or 4 times more or less light in the way aperture and shutter does, it's the concept and result I'm focused on. When going from 400 to 800 or from 1600 to 800, the result is a stop of difference in terms of exposure. This can, as you know, result in an increase or decrease in noise levels (grain in film), but with modern mirrorless and digital cinema cameras we can do so much with ISO. It is important to be technically accurate but the core idea is there in this video.

@@theC47 sorry to be a nit picker :) but there are folk out there who think that adding gain is actually adding light or making the sensor more " sensitive " . Interesting side note that Sony cameras in EI mode wouldn't work like this as the actual recording will always be in one of the two base ISO,s . Changing the EI value , with an MLUT , just allows you to set a constant exposure off set .
