"Before her eleventh-hour decision to reverse course and “indefinitely pause” a landmark plan to charge drivers higher prices for clogging up Manhattan streets, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) received $36,000 from lobbyists for state automobile dealers. Half of that money came from a lobbying group that opposed congestion pricing, citing “consequences for dealers and the thousands of people they employ.”
As recently as two weeks ago, Hochul told world leaders at the Global Economic Summit that investing in public transit like congestion pricing is “what cities are meant to do.”"

  • @ericpmoss

Maintaining roads in Manhattan is inherently very expensive, because businesses expect the roads to be open every day. So crews have to dig down and fix only that part of a problem that leaves them time to get the road above passable again by morning rush. Then they have to do the next part of the fix and get the street passable again. And all that is at overtime wages. It's not like that in every part of Manhattan, but I watched a LOT of that in lower Manhattan over the years.

I have to wonder about that question! Continuously voting in these Democrats, then continuously complaining about these over reaching government policies/laws, makes everyone wonder about the stupidity of most New Yorkers. New York is a great city, and this is coming from someone born and raised in the State run by Boston. Don't think I don't also question the mindset of people in Massachusetts either. For two cities/States with such rivalry, they are the same when it comes to continuing to watch the Democrats destroy their beautiful historical States.

The problem is, most people dont know how things work. Most people think their cities are ran on tax dollors. When in fact your city run on Muni-Bonds (municipal bonds) , which is a loan against your social security number. Your tax dollars actually go to other countries to for the things you want and need. For example.... America has given Israel 85 billion. Israel has universal health care, free education, etc, etc. Meanwhile Americans are struggling to put food on the table and keep the lights on.

I disagree a bit with Waz about people not choosing to drive. People absolutely choose to drive. So many people are practically married to their car, and the freedom of coming and going as they please. So I definitely don't buy this idea that everyone just has to do it and have no other choice. That being said, the city of New York hasn't done anything to make public transportation desirable for most people. And there's just no excuse for it. Go to London, Tokyo, Seoul....giant mega cities with great, clean, reliable, public transportation. It can be done.

It's supposed to limit traffic for both New Yorkers and surrounding suburbanites. There have been aggressive ads in the Subway encouraging us to support the plan, touting how it would pay for so many city services. I live here, and I can see both sides of this issue. We really do need to reduce traffic in midtown, but nobody wants to pay to make it happen. This is an amazing 180 degree turn for her... this was HER plan from the get go, right up to last week.

I am a NYC'er. If I want to go to a show or dinner and drive in, parking alone will cost $45 or more. But I am willing to do that because it's not safe to walk the streets to the subway and take the trains and bus home at midnight. Add another $15 congestion fee to parking, plus bridge tolls of $17, it's almost $100 before I even pick up my fork or my program. The MTA is nothing but a cash cow with a hollow leg. It doesn't matter how much money they receive. It's never enough and the MTA cry for more funds goes up before the current check has cleared. Fares for riders are far too low, constituting about 23% of the actual cost of a ride, while non-riders pay to subsidize every fare through the bridge tolls (over 50% of bridge tolls goes to support the MTA), license fees, fees on phones/cellphones/internet, real estate taxes, motor vehicle registration fee, auto rental tax, taxicab tax, gasoline tax, heating oil and natural gas surcharges, and payroll taxes, for starters. Congestion taxes are just another way to sink money into an inefficient operation at the MTA. Before I paid a congestion fee, I would like to see efficiency experts take over the MTA and make them account for every penny spent--and every dollar wasted.

As a non wealthy commuter who commutes into New York City, Congestion pricing was a plan by the MTA to force people who don't use MTA to fund the MTA, it was a cash grab. Prior to the pandemic the MTA continuously raised fares without cleaning or improving Subways or bus systems, no effort was made to handle any influx of new commuters, subways were not made cleaner, safter or more appealing. I have no dog in the NY Governors race but Congestion pricing was a shit plan and I'm glad it's been paused.

Speaking as someone who's lived in NYC since 1976, I can say that the MTA is just purely corrupted! They receive billions of dollars and yet the system is still a mess! Most of the station improvements are in higher income areas, every weekend there are disruptions (which is why I avoid taking subways on the weekends!), the buses are still late, and I'm still hyper alert when using the subway because there are still a lot of weirdo's around. Yes there are a lot more law enforcement in the subway system, but they are mostly standing around chatting and looking at their phone's in the upper levels and not down on the platforms where most of the crimes happen. The MTA is just a black hole, the money goes in but not much goes out! As for the $15 congestion toll, it would be another financial burden for the average working class New Yorker, and as far as I'm concerned, it would just end up into the MTA's bottomless money pit! I usually don't drive into Manhattan unless absolutely necessary, but sometimes I go in to do a job and I have to carry a lot of stuff for that job, but I decided I would decline jobs from Manhattan when the toll would take effect, it just didn't make financial sense to me. Maybe if the toll was $5, I would pay it, but $15, absolutely not. And don't get me started with NJ Transit! If they want people from NJ to take public transit, NJ has to be reliable, and it is just as bad as the MTA! On top of that NJ Transit wants to raise the fares for their crappy system! 😡

Yes, the deal sucked for working people who have really no choice but to drive into Manhattan. However, studies and surveys showed that would have only affected up to 5% or fewer in the grand scheme of things, meaning that the vast majority of New Yorkers (especially those in the outer boroughs) utilize the MTA. The only way to make the MTA better, safer, and more reliable would have been the funds from the congestion tax proceeds. Unfortunately now, the vast majority suffer and miss out on much needed improved upgrades to mass transit. Now did Hochal flip because of the blue collared motorists getting screwed? Of course not. She flipped because of the donors and lobbyists. For the most of us, we will have to suffer a deteriorating MTA, people will continue to complain about the service, lack of safety and cleanliness, and will reinforce the stigma New Yorkers have felt for far too long

I'm a retiree born, raised and living on a fixed income. I live in Staten Island. I have to pay the round trip toll on the Verrazano bridge which was supposed to be free once the bridge was paid for. Additionally S.I. is the only NYC borough you have to pay tolls to enter and leave S.I. either via the Verrazano, the Geothals, the Bayonne and Outer Bridges. I suffer from chronic back pain. I have to see my pain management physician in midtown every month. Adding insult if I use the B'klyn Queens Expressway to get into Manhattan it is damaging to my vehicle bc the BQE is one of the worst maintained roadways in the country. To preserve my vehicle I pay another roundtrip toll at the B'klyn Battery Tunnel which saves me ½ hr in drive time getting me to the reasonably well maintained FDR Drive to get me to midtown❗

"London has a fantasic public transportation systen. New York City hasn't invested in its public transportation in a long time.", clearly Ana doesn't know what she's talking about. I'm a US/UK dual national who visits London and NYC each year. In London, I stay in Zone 3. If I travel to central London, then my TfL (Travel for London) charges are capped at about 14GBP ($18) per day, ($126/week). Whilst in NYC, I purchase a one week travelcard for $32 that allows my to ride the NYC subway system 24/7. Personally, when it comes to public transportation, I'll take New York City over London! Finally, the Tube stations and trains (subway cars) in London are hardly a model of modernity and cleanliness, with perhaps the recently opened Elizabeth Line being an exception.

A weekly travelcard for the London subway zones 1-3 is £ 50.20 which is far from your indicated $ 126/week.

@@petermastenbroek7719 Who uses travelcards these days? I use my UK creditcard which the last time I was in London topped off at GBP 14 per day. However, I did go to Richmond Station which is in Zone 4. I haven't used an Oyster Card in years. BTW, I always use the same creditcard for travel. Depending on where I go, I use trains, buses, and the DLR on the same day. However, I never go further than Zone 4 and usually stay within Zones 1 to 3.

as a new Yorker, I was stressing about having to pay 15 to drive in and then out again for work. it's already ridiculously expensive to pay for parking. not to mention that the subway didn't feel safe nor clean. I loved in cali and their trolleys were clean and much safer.
