Thank you for taking the time to film this video. I was there from 86 to 89 and I wish I did a better job of preserving those memories with photos and video. My parents had a video camera but I never thought to film the high school or my friends. I see some things are exactly the same and other things are completely different. Thank you.

Lived there in the early 90s, good times

They didn't just leave it up. The base still belongs to Japan. If we are ever kicked out, everything nailed down goes back to Japan. I served on the USS Kittyhawk 2000 - 2003. Lived in Yokohama 15 years after.

Thanks for this video! I was a Navy brat living there in 1984. Got my first drivers license there. Got my first job there lifeguarding at the outdoor pool. So many memories at the bowling alley. Went to Kinnick HS there, but not the new building you saw…we were in the old torpedo factory which was in the same spot. Benny Decker theater. I lived in officers housing just inside the gate and up the mountain. Thanks for the walk down memory lane.

An awesome tour of somewhere most people never get to see - really felt like I was there!

I went to Yokosuka back in March 1984 while on Westpac 84, part of the Kitty Hawk Battlegroup. I was on USS Long Beach (CGN-9). We also did an exercise with the South Korean Navy, Exercise Team Spirit. There were a lot of protesters and news reporters etc because our ship was there. We totally understood why..! I remember those jackets you showed and back in thee day a lot of guys had them in San Diego. I can still see and hear a lot American sailors with beautiful Japanese women speaking Japanese to me. Those women would be covering their mouths and laughing at me because I didn't understand them. I regret getting on the train and going to Tokyo like a lot of my shipmates did. Japanese students wanting to practice their English helped them get there! I have been to Taipei, Taiwan last year and loved it. Going back to the Philippines and visiting Thailand for the first time this year. I wouldn't mind retiring in Japan after seeing this video...! Thank you for sharing this video and everything you said about the base was true! I felt the same way when I was stationed in the Philippines!

My husband is getting stationed there soon, so I'm trying to prepare for the big move, and this really helped! Thank you!

NEX means Navy Exchange. It's the Navy store that basically provides everything. I was there in the early 90s. All I remember is Popeyes bar. Place has changed a lot since I been there.

Hi Adam, great video! I spent five years stationed at SRF in Yokosuka from 2015-2020 and am trying to get orders back, best five years of my life hands down. There are some really awesome live jazz clubs out in town too. There are also some really cool (and probably haunted) tunnels in use by COMDESRON that were used during WWII. One note on the Filipino restaurants off base: a large proportion of US Navy sailors (or spouses) are Filipino / Filipina; you'll find a HUGE Filipino aisle in the commissary and balikbayan boxes next to the post office.

very cool I lived there for two and a half years back in the 80's. My ex husband was a Marine stationed there and our oldest son was born there. I'm amazed at how much it has changed and yet still the same. This video made my day.

I grew up on Yokosuka base early to mid 90’s. It’s so fun to see how much it has changed. The middle school didn’t exist when I was there. I also was a kid/teenager that explored off base unsupervised with other American kids that attended those schools. It was such a special privilege and responsibility to have (not sure if kids today still have that privilege. I wouldn’t be surprised if that privilege was revoked because unsupervised American kids can possibly be a bad thing 😅). Even though I had lived on an American base for so many years in Japan, moving back to the States was a little bit of a culture shock. I may have been born in a different country besides Japan, I’m still American and I love America but if I had a choice and the money, I’d still prefer to go back to Japan. Even over my birth country. I understand life on an American base is different from life in Japan but that’s how much I’ve come to adore that country. It’s a part of me. ❤ Thank you for this video!

I lived here in 1969 & 1970 i attended Sullivans Middle school which had Grades 6,7,8. The school was located in the middle of the base west of Thew Gym. Yo Hi was in Yokohama at that time. My Brother went to High School with Mark Hamill AKA Luke Skywalker I met him once while on an Ocean liner in Yokohama seeing off his Girlfriend girlfriend at the time, whom was the daughter of the Navy Commander my Dad relieved change of command

Wow. Seeing the Green Hill arcade again. Talk about bringing back memories. Thanks for the tour. Looks like some things have changed, but not really all that much. And that On yasii is going to get attacked the next time I'm there.

Today we join Adam as he goes to Yokosuka, Japan to explore the US Naval Base where he shows off how American it looks and feels while also showing of the Japanese side of the city as well. Meanwhile the Sunny Human Man climbs Mountains to go Video Game hunting. Later the to of them along with a Maple flavoured human living in Japan, go and get the MEAT SWEATS. Adam also finds a controller for an Irish gentleman, and gives him bonus Japanese candy.. - Thanks for the tour Adam. Looking forward to the finale of this grand adventure.

Thanks for sharing. Basically you going to the Honch and base gave me nostalgia. Miss being stationed there! And also we do have a Panda Express here on Okinawa without being on base!

News to me!

Haven't been back there in over two years, I see a lot still hasn't changed.

I was stationed there from 89-91 on the USS Midway (CV-41). Nice to see the base again. Lots of changes.

Interesting video. I was there 77-79 on the USS Knox. In my off time I drove NEX on base taxies when the bars got old. In 1978 when building the Commissary, a bulldozer pulled a 500 pound bomb out of the ground like a carrot. The serial number traced it back to WW2 and was part of a group that was dropped on the Dry Dock, this one going into the mud. It was still alive. Ordnance Disposal took it. I really enjoyed my time in Yoko. Visited 13 Countries of my 27 from Yoko. 75-95 FCC(SW)

The air raid siren is a relic from WWII; the base shipyard still uses it to signal the start of the day, lunch break and close of business. Stationed in Yoko for 12 years. (USN, retired).

The sailors walking around are on duty. They're looking after the American heavy areas and keeping sailors under control....to the best of their abilities.

Are you talking about the Sailors off base? This time of day there’s no Shore Patrol. Those Sailors are either heading out in town to eat or are heading home.

FWIW the 'sailors' bit *did* make it into the anime just ask my wife about me freaking out 'he said the thing!' haha. (well 'sailors' wasn't in the line but it was otherwise the same) also that 'all you can eat in an hour' place sounded amazing though for sure.

Interesting how some things haven't changed but a lot are new. Was stationed there 1980-83 ..no fast food places at all. The white building ( red cross) was the overseas calling station. It cost me $35 for 15 min.( Remember no cells and very snail mail 😂) Japan still owns the base, the Navy just leases it.

didnt know you've been to australia. Singapore is a great visit if you're ever down. loved seeing the giant godzilla slide

Stationed there from 99-02 A few of the bars located in the Honch would allow Sailors to bring their own beer (if you knew the bar tenders well enough). We would buy cases of beer at the Navy Commissary and bring them to the bar (the bartender's held the case behind the bar for you, then they would just give you a drink from your box of beer whenever you needed another). At the time beer was around 700 yen, so BYOB was a much more affordable way to drink. Often times you wouldn't finish all the beer you brought to the bar, so the bar would just inherit any of the beers you didnt drink....lol A write of passage in the Honch for a Sailor was to take a shot of Habu Sake at Popeye's, and walk down to the Chu-Hi station (not a official name) for a freshly made Chu-Hi. Good times

I love this video. I was stationed here December 2000 to October 2003. Walking all over that base in summer was brutal because of the humidity. There was a Taco Bell on base. I never chose McDonalds over Taco Bell.

It's not a Best Buy exactly, but it's supplied by them. All the electronics are American.

It’s not supplied by Best Buy at all. The contracts are handled by NEXCOM with the product companies (Sony, Microsoft, Apple, etc.) to provide those items for sale.

You could have taken a base taxi to the other side to check out the Chili's and Navy Lodge.

I lived here when I was 6-9. Went to the Sullivan's Elementary School. Just curious, why couldn't you get up to the Navy Lodge and those areas at the top of the base?

That road your on in 1975 to 1978 was called Honcho 1 and the next street was Honcho 2 where they had bars and places that me and friends in the US Navy would party all night and be sick at morning muster!

Cool video! Would love to visit there one day as an Aussie. Btw, contrary to common belief, I believe that the land on which US military bases overseas are situated, while under US military control, is the sovereign territory of the host country--as is the case with embassies/consulates.

They don't have to switch sides. Remember, Japanese civilians work on the base and all the cars are Japanese. All Americans have to get a new license to drive. The train system was so good many of us never felt the need to drive. Really miss Japan.

I was in Yokosuka 2 weeks ago (First time in japan) and tried hunting down a shenmue guide but couldn't find any. On dobuita street I asked and 2 older ladies even looked up and down for it in the dobuita tourist center (They looked for it really hard and I felt bad and thanked them anyways though), the military surplus store didn't have any either. Maybe I should've looked harder in the tourist office by the train station and asked there too. I'm kicking myself, but I hope to return to Japan very soon! I'm really liking your Flying & Eating channel btw!

You have to have someone eligible to be there vouch for you and sign paperwork to that extent. If you have that, as a US citizen it's pretty easy. Provided you aren't a criminal or anything. But if you're just a nice guy on the street curious about the base, you can't go beyond that little room at the beginning.

I saw that Indian restaurant when I was in Japan last month. I wanted to try it but I had to eat at that burger place you ate at in a previous video that had presidential burgers. I had to try the Trump burger for how sickening big it was 😂

I think you mean San Bernadino, and not...exactly. The original McDonald's brothers location was there but famously kind of stolen and moved to Chicago in the 1950s.

@@AdamEatsTheWorld Seems that in such cases there is an agreement that the base is controlled by the military but it remains territory of the home country unlike for example with embassies.

@@FranzBinder20 In the case of Cuba Guantanamo base perhaps doesn't apply what the rule says, otherwise the Cuban dictatorship would have kicked out the US operation since long ago. Same as was with Hong Kong, the UK shouldn't have honored their pact with the current communist regime which didn't represent the will of the people that live in the former British territory.

You stated only US Military can go on base: Untrue. Family members, US civilians as well as Japanese civilians (Master Labor Contractors) and there is also a contingent of Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Forces on this base. It is also NOT US territory - the base is still Japan.....unlike our Embassy which IS sovereign US territory.

Dude, you're taking that too literally. I went on to the base myself. My point was only US military and their associates are eligible. Meaning, a random Joe with no reason or connection to it could just waltz onto the base. As for the sovereign nature of it, that's not exactly true either. The territory is spoils of war logic, as opposed to say Korean bases where we're invited. Yes, politically speaking, if the Japanese wanted to reclaim it, they could. But, clearly, they don't. So until such time, US soil it is and US soil it remains.

@@AdamEatsTheWorldThat’s factually incorrect; Japan retains sovereignty of the land. Case in point, if a Sailor gets in trouble out in town and is being chased by the Japanese Police, they can’t take sanctuary on the base (as they could in the US given state police don’t have jurisdiction). The only time they (the Sailor) would be “safe” is if they get onboard one of the ships there (the only true US territory there).

Because the Chinese didn't have a navy or a force to speak of. They were in the middle of a feudal civil war when the Japanese invaded.

I think the actions taken were the correct ones. Senseless revenge wouldn't fix anything, it simply perpetuates the violence. The Americans were correct to step in and stop the fighting. I recognize the Chinese never got to feel their personal justice, but they need to understand...they won as best they could.

Interesting about Denver. Unfortunately, you HAVE to have an address there for them to ship anything. We found that out the hard way.
