When I got divorced I bought a 38 foot ketch in San Francisco and sailed her to Baja, Mexico. This was the song I had playing on the stereo when I sailed under the Golden Gate Bridge. Evertime I hear it I think of the ex-wife and the sense of freedom of starting a new journey.

Best three-part harmonies in rock. Wonderful song - The line "we never failed to fail, it was the easiest thing to do" hits me every time. The song feels personal for quite a few people here in New Zealand - he's describing a boat journey from the US (starting in Avalon, on California's Catalina Island) down to the south Pacific (past Papeete and the Marquesas in French Polynesia). The Southern Cross is a constellation only easily seen in the Southern Hemisphere - our equivalent of the north's Big Dipper. Its even on our national flag.

The Southern Cross are the Stars that are on our (New Zealand) flag and also the Australian flag and obviously a constellation in the sky above us so this song has a deeper meaning for us. I believe stills wrote it after his divorce and it's about finding himself and figuring out life's problems when you are at sea in an expanse that is bigger than life itself and the problems we face navigating it.

Hi guys, I built fishing boats and worked on the ocean as a fisherman and lobsterman. There are a lot of references in this song that might not make sense to people who have never sailed or been around the culture of the sea. Like a "reach", a "following sea", "the trades", " The Marquesas", "midnight watch", "all my flags are a-flying" etc. The name itself is a reference to "The Southern Cross" which is a star constellation used for navigation below the equator, where you can't see the North Star. It really is a beautiful song that uses those references to tell and build up an emotional story. It seems idyllic and romantic to think of sailing as only freedom but there is a lot of loneliness, sometimes gripping fear, and time to think about regrets and happiness, who we are, set in the enormous sea of the universe, which is spiritual..

Steven Stills album "Manassas" was named after his boat. Crosby was onboard his schooner "Mayan" when he wrote the song "Woden Ships".. He owned Mayan for 4 decades. when his wife ws killed in a car crash he sailed Mayan from Florida to San Francisco via the Panama Canal. Crosby started sailing dingies as a kid in Santa Barbara. You may associate boats with "rich people" but I associate them with peace, freedom.,and adventure. When "sailing on a reach in a following sea" you are not thinking about your bank account.

You need not be rich to own and live on a sailboat, in fact quite the contrary is entirely possible. You do need to be willing to work hard while living a minimalist lifestyle, which most probably won't enjoy long term. The payoff...you won't enjoy the same freedom anywhere else on this planet and for some there is an instinctive appeal to experiencing our natural world while connecting with the the wind. I should also note, while the lifestyle can be intoxicating the seas abide no excuse, meting only consequence.

@@RickZackExploreOffroad I grew up on the coast of Maine. Almost everyone I knew had a boat of some kind, mostly sailboats and/or fishing boats. Manassas was a fishing boat. Just because someone owned a boat or wrote a song about one doesn't make their music "yacht rock". The Beatles "Hey Jude" was about John Lennon's son. So, I guess every song with a similar feel should be labeled "child rock"? Plenty of rockers owned sports cars, so I guess they all played "sports car rock". Your argument has nothing to do with my point. "Yacht rock" is a ridiculous label.

Because you can feel free on a boat (which is absolutely the case) doesn't make all slower songs "yacht rock". And yes, you can work toward owning a yacht without being ultra rich, but when you say the word yacht, a very high percentage of people are going to think of luxury and money. I like these reactors and have complimented them before, but I'll stand by what I said, that "yacht rock" is a silly label.

And it arose from an Internet Parody in the 2000s by a group of Gen Xer comic wanna bes because they hated Micheal McDonald. The parody is like a 7th grade SNL and is still on YT. It was NOT a way to celebrate those types of songs, it was a DEROGATORY PARODY, A SPOOF. IT WAS INSULTING AND INACCURATE ON TOP OF IT.

As I said in your Steely Dan Hey 19 reaction, "Yacht Rock" is a made up long after the fact term created by an early internet parody in the 2000s. It was a derogatory term applied to soft lite rock songs. Back in the 70s and 80s when most of these songs were created, there was NO SUCH GENRE CALLED YACHT ROCK. Having said that, IF YACHT ROCK WAS A REAL GENRE, this actually would make sense as a "Yacht Rock" tune. Its actually about going recreational sailing, taking a trip on a boat. So this is one of the few songs called "Yacht Rock" that logically fits the made up silliness. CSN were great writers and harmony singers, and they captured the feel and language of sailing the seas. Btw, the "Southern Cross" is the prominent star formation you see most prominently in the Southern Hemisphere, and actually points to the North Star. Thus, recognizing the Southern Cross was essential to navigating a boat at night. Hence, the name and reference.

Fagen's heroes were Coltrane, Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, Dave Brubeck etc, Jazz Legends. @@Deborahtunes I posted a few comments in this reaction and in their recent Steely Dan reaction explaining it. Basically it was from an internet parody in the mid 2000s by a group of fairly lame SNL style comic wanna bes who despised Micheal McDonald. They apparently thought that McDonald, who sang back up on a bunch of Steely Dan songs, and then became the Doobie Brothers lead singer before starting a successful solo career featuring his "blue eyed soul" voice, was too "everywhere" and ingrained in American music, so they created this derogatory video parody in about 10 parts in the early days of the internet. They took aim at all soft easy listening pop/rock of the 70s and early 80s as lame "yacht rock" for well to do white "yuppies" etc. Unfortunately this got noticed by some radio station corporate suits programmers and the newer digital radio stations like XM, who glommed onto the idea to lop all soft rock/easy listening type songs into "Yacht Rock" for marketing purposes. So what started out as a putdown and derogatory label got all lumped into this new made up genre. Steely Dan was guilty by association because they used McDonald's vocals on songs such as Pretzel Logic and Peg etc. Lmao 🤣

Yacht rock is a made up term from 2004 I don't agree with this classification of music

I disagree with putting every singer and group into a niche. Music is too creative to have that done to it.

Unfortunately, the industry has done this to help the audience find artist with a similar music styles. And yes, I agree, it puts creatives musicians in a box because they become limited in scope in the style of music they can produce.

Add this song to your list. It involves paddle boats near New Orleans so it qualifies, doesn't it? It's a masterpiece by The Doobie Brothers prior to Michael McDonald joining, my favorite era! "Black Water" kzread.info/dash/bejne/hKeEldR_eq3RYbw.html
