EXPLORING THE VALLEY OF THE QUEENS - PHARAOH'S FAMILY TOMBS! LUXOR, EGYPT
Explore with me one of less visited and astonishing burial grounds - the Valley of the Queens in Luxor. Located in Upper Egypt on the western bank of the Nile, opposite the ancient city of Thebes, this ancient cemetery lies in the vicinity of the ancient workmen’s village Deir el-Medina and the Valley of the Kings. Called by ancient Egyptians Ta-Set-Neferu “the place of beauty, the place of perfection” and today Wādī al Malekāt the ancient site is most famous for the QV66 - the tomb of Nefertari, beloved wife of Ramesses the Great. Nevertheless, it is only one of 111 tombs of queens and royal children discovered in the Valley of the Queens.
We’ll have a chance to admire QV44, QV55, and QV52, tombs of princes: Khaemwaset, Amunherkhepeshef, and queen Tyti all dating back to the 20th dynasty. We’ll also encounter the smallest mummified body I’ve ever seen, learn more about the mummy and the lives of ancient Egyptian queens and royal children. We’ll watch beautiful carvings, paintings of ancient Egyptian gods, funerary texts.

Irena, this has to be my favourite video, to date. It seems that the Queens of Egypt were (unfortunately) not lauded the same prominence as their male counterparts - but then given the Patriarchal society - then, as now - one can only wonder as to why this may have been so prevalent; it is better to consider that these female deities carry with them greater significance in the modern world. You are, as ever, brilliant in bringing this to everyone's attention. I cannot recall having ever seen such beautifully preserved (painted) cartouches, & similarly, a pity that one cannot film inside certain Necropoli (tho' it is appreciated that condensation is a huge factor in maintaining that preservation). First rate !!
These videos are great I will see all of these places in 6 weeks

“Stylistic maturity” what an apt way of wording a phenomenon I’ve learned about the world over Every culture’s aesthetic motifs started out crude and dripping wet, and then “matured” over centuries and millennia into the most beautiful “outfits” for their architectural staples

But how to account for the quality of the colouring or the preservation? These are supposedly not buon fresco pictures, but paintings executed on top of already dried plaster, a secco. Elsewhere in Egypt there are temples above ground of carved and painted stone, wonderful surviving remnants on soffits and the undersides of lintels . But the first tomb Irena shows us, QV55, was opened up over a hundred years ago and is still fresh. If the state of preservation is due to the climatic conditions of Egypt and the exclusion of natural light and air from the tombs, how are we to account for the original execution of the work in the (half) dark? These pictures are so finely carved and painted they are still admirable under strong electric light 3000 years later. Even the excavation of these chambers would have been an extremely difficult task, never mind their decoration. Narrow spaces where light barely penetrates, where open flames would have been required in order to see and oxygen is quickly exhausted, yet which sometimes go on seemingly forever....mysterious!

As a pointless addendum to my above comment it seems that the white paint ground employed was a mixture of ground white calcite (alabaster), gum (unspecified) and water. This at least according to the people at the Fitzwilliam Museum. Whether the artists painted on to this mixture damp or dry remains unclear as does whether it was used only for linen covered wood coffins. The fact that these were originally varnished is also fascinating. Modern varnish does not last. If any one's interested there is this short demonstration video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oqOJ28OEZq3Heps.html

Hey AS, the tomb of Nefertari is my favourite tomb. It is spectacular, she was obviously a very special woman to have a tomb more beautiful than the Pharaoh's themselves...but they don't let anyone in there. I can only find 3D lidar scans of it. Anyway, great vid as always AS...much peace to you and your amazing camera person.

well done, great job, carry on and I wish you great success and your channel someday becomes number 1 in the world....They were true believers as they quickly started digging their graves early in their life as they knew that death is unexpected and comes suddenly.... surely when you read captions from the pyramid texts and hymns to Iten or even to Amen they assured that all the creatures are bound to perish and they had to meet god with pure and sound hearts ...

I don't know the reason, but I know that it's forbidden even without the flash. Sometimes they allow you to use your phone, but not a camera, but they actually don't say why. 😅 Nevertheless, with a special permission form Cairo filming is allowed so I just gave up to search any logic behind all these bans.
