Not necessarily enjoy it, but it's a very ancient ritual and differs from the Vedic view of divinity. I don't think that should be disturbed.

I lived here all my life and all people I know are having meltdows literally and metaphorically in the heat this year. Loved your vlog btw! glad you enjoyed some of the aesthetics in our city! There is much more to see in Bnegal, come down here again during Nov-Feb, you'll love it.

Although I am not a fan of the institution and some of the Ideological aspects of ISKCON, but he very much should visit Mayapur to ask knowledgeable devotees questions as to why some sects like Shivites etc. do such unnecessary violence via sacrifices. I think they will be able to give him satisfactory answers.

Beware when u r in Kalighat temple.... I'm a local from there.... unlike Dakshineswar it's totally a business place in Kalighat rather than devotion.... u didn't need to open ur shoes inside any shop.... later they would demand money.... just open ur shoes outside anywhere before entering the garvgriha....

The only worthwhile sacrifice is the sacrifice of oneself. Sacrificing the parts of ourselves that are not serving us, or in rare cases, sacrificing our own life to save the life of another. Not taking the life of another.

@@TheWanderYearssYou see, Hinduism has three major sects, namely Vaishnavism, who worship Vishnu and his avatars as the supreme being. Now in Vaishnavism, vegetarianism is forced and the consumption of intoxicants is also banned. It is the most puritanical branch and it is the most prevalent one and this is the one that the westerners most often take it as Hinduism by default due to the popularity of Vaishnavate deities like Krishna, Rama etc. Then comes Shaivism which is also a major branch which worships Shiva as the supreme being. Here, eating meat is still a taboo but consumption of intoxicants like ganja, bhang etc are allowed. The third is Shaktism, which incorporates the "tantric" mode of worship of goddesses and it is here that consumption of meat is allowed. They worship the goddess by the so called "panchamakara" tradition, i.e. meat, alcohol, fish and other offerings and they do blood sacrifices. If you go to Kamakhya and other temples like that, you'll see double the amount of sacrifices. Or if you go to Nepal during their festivals like Dashain. It is because in those regions, the third branch is dominant. Ofcourse, I have omitted several details here about the separate branches of tantra which does not incorporate sacrifices. I personally, belong to the Vaishnavate branch by personal choice and so I abhor animal sacrifices. I too live in Kolkata but I have never set foot in these accursed temples and I never would. Hope this information is useful and you'll be cautious about going into any arbitrary temples in India. It is often wise to read up on the temple and it's mode of worship before going there. In short, if you hate cruelty towards animals, then try and avoid "Devi" temples especially the large and ancient ones. In Nepal however, the above comment won't do you too much favour as in Newari tradition, animal sacrifices are common even amongst Buddhists and they even sacrifice animals to Ganesha or Shiva temples (eg. Suriya Vinayak temple or Bhairavsthan temple).

James Prinsep was an amazingly versatile man. He was an Englishman who came to India and is known for many significant contributions. A trained architect, he is known for his contribution in deciphering Indian ancient scripts like 'Brahmi' 'Kharosti' etc. " He was a scholar, orientalist and antiquary. He was the founding editor of the Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bengal and is best remembered for deciphering the Kharosthi and Brahmi scripts of ancient India. He studied, documented and illustrated many aspects of numismatics, metallurgy, meteorology apart from pursuing his career in India as an assay master at the mint in Benares. A talented artist and draftsman, Prinsep made meticulous sketches of ancient monuments, astronomy, instruments, fossils and other subjects. He was also very interested in understanding weather. He designed a modified barometer that automatically compensated for temperature. He maintained meteorological registers, apart from supplying barometers to volunteers and graphically summarising the records of others. He conducted experiments on practical methods to prevent rusting of iron surfaces."

I'm not a Hindu but I understand why they would sacrifice to Ma Kali. It's because historically she is a Tantric Goddess. I have been told that in the past and still today in rural parts of India they perform child sacrifices to Kali. It is my personal view that out of all the Hindu Gods/Goddesses she is a demon god. Still, people will worship her for Tantric purposes to gain a certain kind of power similar to what the SITH have in StarWars.

About sacrifice of animal: I don't know you know or not Kali worship comes from Shakta traditions in Hinduism specially popular in Bengal, Assam and rest of East India to a certain degree. In shakta tradition animal sacrifice has been always an important thing. My historian friend tells me that East India adopted vedic culture later and many local tribal traditions were mixed into their practices. I would suggest to dig deep on the underlined Philosophy of this particular sect of Hinduism while you're in Bengal as it is most practiced here. Joy ma Kali

A brief history of Bengal(and Eastern India) explaining religious sacrifices Bengal is at the Eastern extremity of Indo-European world. During the spread of Hinduism, many local tribal religions got amalgamated which shaped today's Bengal. This included animal sacrifice, tantrism and shamanism. After that we get roughly 500 years of Budhhist rule in Bengal, most of which is forgotten. However, this Budhhist rule left and indellible mark on Bengali culture. This Budhhism too was influenced heavily by Tantrism, which in turn meant more animal sacrifice. Bengal had turned into a very dark, dark place before the Middle Ages. Like a lot of dark magic, dark rituals, animal(even human) sacrifices, too much gore. By this time though, majority of the Budhhists reconverted to Hinduism. The King of Bengal asked for North Indian priests to emigrate into Bengal to bring some aspects of the Vedas back. This brought in todays Mukherjees, Chatterjees etc. whose main motive was to reform Bengali Hindu rituals. Then we have Bhakti movements brought by Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, who explored the soft side of Hinduism, like on the core principles of ahimsa etc. Finally we have the modern Bengali Hinduism, but some of those dark practises from the past still survive.

You need meat as offering to goddess Kali. Often in some parts of Bengal in old times even human meat used to be offered. Sometimes the Kali temple is close to cremation grounds so that meat could be fetched from cremated bodies. Blood and flesh is part of Shakta tradition. Shakta literally means worshiper of power / shakti. Bengal also had tradition of human sacrifice which was banned eventually.

I don't think people understand Shakta Upasana. I am no expert myself. But certain practices have meaning and they go beyond us. Maa Kali is a very "bhayankar" devi. In order to fully please or worship her, certain things must be done. She holds certain energy although her source is from the Adi shakti, but the 10 mahavidyas have different purpose and they are there for certain reasons and are worshipped in a certain way. Yes it sounds barbaric to us because we cannot comprehend such things. But devi Shakti is beyond us.

Kali is supposed to represent "impurity" as one of the aspects of her divine being. That is why, she is probably the only goddess to whom fish, meat, even alcohol and all other forms of "impurities" is given as offerings. This is also the reason why Kali has such a monopoly of being the God of choice for all the "impure" elements of the society, like the robbers and the lower cast workers, because Kali is the only God that accepts them with all their "impurities"

Hinduism has no central doctrinal authority and many practicing Hindus do not claim to belong to any particular denomination or tradition. Four major traditions are, however, used in scholarly studies: Vaishnavism, Shaivism, Shaktism and Smartism. In Bengal most people follow Shaktism which requires animal sacrifice. Animal sacrifice is performed in very few temples nowadays.

I also feel very bad and uncomfortable with animal sacrifices...but in Sakta ideology it is a part of worship..as Kali is the rage personified of adi sakti... traditionally the warriors did animal sacrifices before battles.... please visit Dakshineswar temple, that one will make you feel good.

this temple is absolutely waste at this point , the evil CM has destroyed the sanctity of the temple, the temple itself is pretty young, however the place Kalighat is one of the 4 Adishaktipeeths which is extremely powerful, but in this avatar ...alas

Bengal was the hub of nationalism back in the 20th century now since 2011 ever since the bangladeshi muslim cm was voted to power it has become a muslim majority state . The worst thing is Kolkata is that when India won the world cup recently there was no hype in the streets it shows how bad things are there in Kolkata and it is already converted into an islamic state created by there muslim cm .
