Unmasking Britain's Wicca Man: A Pagan Legacy | Parable

Britain has a hugely diverse religious society, but of all the faiths practised here, only one is truly British. Modern pagan witchcraft, otherwise known as Wicca. Wicca is one of the fastest-growing religions in the world. Its followers call themselves witches, worship the Goddess of Nature and believe in the power to cast spells.

While I appreciate your view, the teachings within wicca would suggest that greater things can be achieved as a coven. So, relatively speaking, a witch within a coven with guidance and support is going to have somewhat of an advantage on a solitary witch.

Sort of, but everything we have access to today comes via people like Gardner, Cecil Williamson and Aliestair Crowley. Most of the early witchcraft practices we simply don't know about historically, same as the Druids. We have a few reports by the Romans when they came over, but that's about it, and even then the Romans reports cannot be trusted, because we know that they used propaganda when it came to describing foreign people's back to their countrymen.

I agree a solitary witch can be just as powerful, I believe sometimes even more so. As a solitary I can follow my true hearts path. The craft, wicca what ever you go by is a religion made to grow and expand on what is already there. In many coven's they have become as the churches are, it's their way are no way. If you are one that has different powers from what they really understand then being in that coven will smother you. All people have different gifts, but the one thing we all have in common is the fact that the divine is both within us and without as in all around us. I am not completely solitary because over time my husband has joined me and even at times my daughter has as well and no she's not a kid she's in her 30s. Since it is a religion that is ever changing just as we as people should be ever changing and growing, it is connection to the Lord and Lady, it is connection to the elements, it is connection to mother earth. It is love, and it is peace. Blessings Be

I don't understand. How can he be labelled the father/creator of wicca when he himself was initiated into the practice ritualistically, by practitioners? You almost trivialise the practice by saying it is new, not ancient...then point out that its been a part of various cultures as an ancient practice. I think the only spell here is the one that's been cast on you in the face of a charismatic, quirky showman character whose familiarity appeals to you.

My belief is that the interviewer may have been respectful and honoring yet at the same time perhaps not terrifically discerning. What plumb line does one use to decide if something is worthy or true? That was never established. It sort of struck me more like: "Oh isn't this fun..." rather than qualitative discernment. You can either be initiated into a wiccan coven where you practice with that coven. They have set rules that depend on the high priestess and high priest and the tradition. Anyone can be wiccan. It's an open religion after all. Depends on what you believe really. My suggestion is finding books on the subject. Look at several different authors because they always write about their personal beliefs. Do research on the different traditions. Think of them of like different denominations of the religion. Gardenerian, Alexandrian, Dianic, Seax-wica are a few. Some make you take oaths of secrecy so you may not find many specifics on them. If you prefer to be solitary(practice by yourself), there are tons of books about solitary wicca. Like any religion you would be interested in, do research in the history of it. People tend to hate on wicca. Mostly because of how it is in the US. It's become a very fluffy religion here. Also, you don't have to be a witch to be wiccan. Nor do you have to be wiccan to be a witch. And witch is a gender neutral term.

This is a disgrace, honestly... Witches cannot fly on a broom, that's ridiculous. In ancient times christians thought that witches can fly a broom (there were even some testimonies which were usually made up), until a christian (I cannot remember his name right now though) wrote a book where he explained that witches do not fly physically on their brooms but it's their astral body. Interestingly enough, he wasn't burned at the stake for claiming this, on the contrary, this theory was accepted by the christian community. Also, witches do not live (only) in the woods. That's only in fairytales, again, it's ridiculous! Witches are everywhere, we live in the city, by the sea, on countryside, etc. Just as regular people do... We are not scary and we are not evil. We love nature, we heal, we cleanse. That's what witches do. But don't be mistaken, do not mess with us, although we are not evil, if you hurt us or our loved ones, you will feel our rage, and you do not want that.

@@littleandre4957 You couldn't be more wrong. This is really sad. First of all, yes, in the past there were human and animal sacrifices, even though you should know that the animals that would be later sacrificed for the ritual purposes were treated with respect and love, their body was used for many other things than just for ritual purposes after they were killed, so that they didn't die in vain completely. It was usually some kind of a sick (ill) animal that would die anyway. Many cultures and religions around the world was doing these sacrifices. This couldn't happen today in the modern witchcraft, of course, and especially not in Wicca religion. I don't know where you got this information about us witches slaughtering and murdering our animals, our pets, and let me just tell you - that is ridiculous and it's a lie. We witches love our pets, we keep them as our company, we care about them and they care about us, many times they become our familiars. We differenciate between the theistic and atheistic satanism. Theistic satanists believe in the deity or being called Satan. It is not evil as christians claim. Theistic satanists are not evil, they just believe in a different being or deity than you do. They have the right, don't forget that, thank you. Then we also have an atheistic satanism (I reccomend you to read books of A. S. LaVey). They do not believe in a deity or being called Satan, they don't believe it's a real entity. They believe they are their own gods and goddesses, they view Satan more as the represantation or manifestation of free will. Also, satanism, wicca, witchcraft and paganism are all different things...

For what exactly you use the power of magick depends on the witch. No, the herbs and plants - that is no nonsense. We work with them to heal, to curse, in our spells/rituals, etc. It's our practise. I myself consider myself a kitchen witch and there are witches who like to call themselves green witches (they especially focus on working with different plants and herbs and the pure power of nature in their own practise). @@jesuslovesyou2427 I don't see why are you so angry right now, you have no right to be. For centuries it was christians and their church who were manipulating, murdering, brainwashing and lying. Now you come here, this is VIDEO ABOUT WICCA, NOT CHRISTIANITY, and you dare to bother everyone with your faith. Yes, I feel very much triggered, and I have every right to be triggered. This is just unbelieavable!

@@jesuslovesyou2427 I can't believe this... You know, you're acting like an arrogant selfish brat right now and I am not interested in your pathetic whines. I never said that people don't care, I'm sure there are thousands and thousands of brainwashed believers who call themselves christians. If you are able, read again what I wrote. As you can see, I stated that NOONE HERE cares about your religion and it's very, very disrespectful from you to "spread your gospel" among so many wiccans and witches. Because how would you feel if we went and told everyone that your religion is sinful and simply wrong, that you're on the wrong path, that you will be eternally damned and punished? How would you feel if we wiccans claimed (like christians do) that only our religion is the right one? Who do you think you are to talk to me like this? You're not better nor worse than me. We are all the same. All the religions and spiritualities have something to teach us. But some christians are too selfish, blind and arrogant to see this. When I read your comments, I can only feel rage and hate. I'm actually sorry for you, I pitty you... So you can continue doing whatever you want, but not here, between my wiccan brothers and sisters who are absolutely content with their religion and have no desire to join your church, and definitely not in the way you've been 'spreading'. Because up until now (and I'm not sure you noticed) you've only managed to spread hate and ignorance. I'm done talking to you, but I wish you to know I don't feel hatred towards you at all. I'm rightfully angered by your words, but I don't have any negative hard or feelings for you and only wish you the best and that you reach your full potential. Blessed be. PS: Have a wonderful day/night.

Do you really want this? because most everyone practices witchcraft without knowing it, even many churches. Do you wear a wedding ring on you left hand's ring finger? That's witchcraft. You know how at funerals they ring bells? That's is protection and cleansing aka witchcraft. You know how people blow out candles on their birthday? it's not necessarily witchcraft but you are worshipping Artemis. Do you have a middle name? That's a ward/ protection magic, it's a barrier put up so people can't curse you. Have you ever blown off fireworks or watched a firework show? that's witchcraft, it's cleansing/protection magic the fireworks are to ward off evil spirits. Those were just some of them, not even including obvious ones like throwing salt over your shoulder. Now, knowing this do you want witchcraft to be illegal and possibly be sentenced to death for practicing witchcraft?

@@bye92 I didn't say they would make you a practicing witch, those examples are ways people practice witchcraft though. (it's different than paganism btw, paganism is just worshipping gods and goddesses witchcraft is a practice, very different things.) I believe in your head there must be a very thick seeming line between witches and non-witches, it's really not all that clear of a line though. To get a better understanding, how would you identify a witch vs a non-witch?

Ronald Hutton is actually doubling down in this documentary! He confessed in 2004 in a book called "Witches, Druids and King Arthur" that not only was he unable to prove Wicca's modernity--despite giving every impression that he had--but, he confessed that as he was writing "Triumph of the Moon," he discovered and intentionally ignored evidence tracing Wicca to remote antiquity for no other reason than it would have disproved him, thus making TOTM an exercise in Confirmation Bias. Furthermore, in this documentary he interviews Philip Heselton and barely gives him a chance to explore his far more up-to-date findings that prove the existence of the New Forest coven into which Gardner had been initiated! Hutton has an anti-pagan agenda, and many of us believe that it's because he holds some personal resentment towards his parents who raised him pagan in a British colony in India.

Emmm... Wicca is not an ancient celtic religion. We know this. Wiccans originally called upon the Elemental Watchers... Which are Hebrew in origin. Most of its liturgy comes from the Crowley. And the Horned God... Don't even make me start of the Horned God.

@@inabsolutedarkness13 No one says that it is an "ancient Celtic religion." You are creating a Straw Man argument! Liturgy is also an inept method for dating a religion since religions consistently change historically to meet new social pressures. In fact, the additional liturgy to the BOS actually fulfills its functions as a "Commonplace Book," which is what all Grimoires in fact are. This should come as no surprise. Hutton himself even confessed in the early 2000s he was unable to prove Wicca's modernity (despite giving every inference that he had), and that as he was writing Triumph of the Moon he discovered and intentionally ignored evidence from remote antiquity that closely resembled Wicca and had DIRECT, historical, linear ties to it because it would have disproved him, which makes TOTM an exercise in Confirmation Bias. I don't know about you, but I value integrity and take it personally when a historian is intentionally misleading me because he (or she) has an agenda. You really need to read the book by Ben Whitmore, "Trials of the Moon."
