Exploring the Canadian Desert (Roadtrip Vlog)

Ойындар

I recently visited Canada to see my Grandpa Jim. He and I took a road trip into the Okanagan Valley, a rain shadow in South-Eastern B.C. Enjoy the video!

I went for a run yesterday and explored Renfrew Ravine Park in Vancouver... The water level was low enough so that I could hop across the rocks along the creek. There were tons of salmonberries for me to eat and they were super ripe (much redder than usual).

@glcried "Well I married a girl from Tonasket, in this very town (?). And we lived in Australia for a year and then I wanted to come here and- you know, an adventure. So I had a secure business over there (in Australia), so I wanted to leave the family business. So I come over here; (Oscar: "so you met her in Australia?") I met her in Canada. So I come over here and I bought this old building, it's an old gas station from my father-in-law. And I started this business, and this town has been good to me. Like it's- it's made me.. you know.. prosperous. Like people say you can't prosper in Tonasket because it's a very low socio-economic community. But, an actual fact, you can. Especially for an Aussie. Because Aussies are all investors you know? And.. and no one here is an investor and I bought like houses for $30,000 and they were giving you like, $100 dollars a week (not sure that's actually what he says), which doesn't match but it pays for itself plus gives you an income you know? So it's- it's really- so this was cash flow in (car drives by so can't hear anything), I've been here 27 years and now I'm leaving." (story ends)

It doesn't sound very thick to me. Sounds like a more broad than general Australian but as an australian it sounded like he picked up some canadian features in his accent, which may explain why it might sound "thick". Like the way he says "yeah" at 12:00 is very much North American rather than Australian.

Great blog Oscar. I lived in Hope for about 6 months when I was a lot younger, and hated practically every second of it & moved away as soon as I could. But my mom loved it, and stayed there right till she died. I still remember one day waking up at her place, looking out the window & 3 black bears were just sitting out in the yard chilling. Yeah, the interior of B.C. (& Washington has some too) has a lot of wine growing. Too bad that you picked last month to come here, when it was raining 50% of the days. Its been sunny & 20+C every day in July so far, getting up to 30 in Vancouver on Monday (39 in Princeton). Bet your grandpa loved having the chance to point out all the things he knows. What type of bus driver was he? A city driver? Or more like regional/cross country? Lighthouse Park is a place a bunch of my followers always want me to go check out, since its a notable filming locations for 1 of the TV shows that filmed here, but since I dont drive I never get there. Now I can direct them to yours (although you didnt get the exact spot they want to see.....but at least they'll get some of the idea of it). Solid job.

I've made that drive many times back when I used to go to the Shambhala EDM music festival many years ago... One time I got food poisoning after eating at an A&W restaurant in Osoyoos. We stayed at a hotel in Castlegar, but I couldn't sleep cuz I kept puking up everything, even water. In the middle of the night, we ended up driving 30 mins to Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital in Trail, BC where they put me on an IV drip. There's no hospital in Castlegar.

Early in British Columbia's history they did not have a wine industry but between 1919 and 1933 the US attempted, disastrously, to ban alcoholic beverages and farmers in the Okanagan Valley found they could sell wine to certain Americans who bought in bulk. W.A.C. Bennett, one of the early entrepreneurs, ended up being the premier of the province.

So cool glad you could visit the PNW and my home area! Really cool you pointed out Mount Baker I think I definitely take it for granted that I live in a state with 5 volcanoes. So cool you could go on the Crowsnest Highway (Highway 3), last year I got to go on it to Manning Pass was really cool. That was US highway 97 which goes all the way from the border to Weed, California. Next time you come, I would recommend coming either in July-August or late September or early October. That's usually when there is no rain and temps are usually around 80. Great time to go to Olympic National Park, Mount Rainier NP, Mount Saint Helens, and Artist Point (Mount Baker) in Washington. Also would really recommend the North Cascades Highway especially in early October with the larches at its peak. There are a few trails like Maple Pass Loop and Blue Lake that I would really recommend.
