Also Ive since been to a DC United game at Audi field and I like that stadium as well. RFK was always doomed because its one of those old multi use stadiums that really just ends up being sub par overall. I hate Fedex field and have been wanting them to tear down RFK and build a new football stadium there for years but now that's not gonna happen.

    13:24 the Crown amp racks are likely (part of) the amps for the main stadium PA system. notice they say 'SPK 9 SPK 10' which makes sense, as these are Crown model 'CH2', capable of driving two channels. Also notice the number starts at AMP29, so there is probably a couple of these clusters around the stadium. Usually in commercial fixed installations like this, the amps are run in 70 volt mode which allows for long speaker wire runs, but still, the amps need to be somewhat close to the speakers as with any signal over copper, you lose it the longer the run. These particular amps are rated for 600W per channel when run in 70v which is more than enough to drive the stadium horns. The distributed audio (speakers that run into lobbies, press boxes, corridors etc) looks to have been driven by the CTs 8200 (or similar) amps on the bottom portion of these racks (the ones with the silver fronts). It's an 4 or 8 zone amp, I imagine they sent different feeds to different zones and again is run in 70v mode for long cable runs. Note: TV/Radio broadcasters always bring their own trucks, so none of this equipment was likely used for television/radio broadcasts, only sound inside the stadium. Sometimes the network guys will have maybe the stadium announcers mic coming into the board just to monitor and listen to but obviously that never goes to air - you have your sportscasters for that.

    11:25 Those are for radio broadcasting. Note the acoustic treatment behind the forwardmost position. The glass is acoustically reflective so you have to kill the resonance. If you note how deadened your voices sounded when you were talking there, that's what was going on. You have a couple of seats for dual announcers and places behind them for researching players and coaches on the fly. Then you have places for engineer and producer.

Saw the Stones & Stevie Wonder on July 4, 1972 and The Who on their 25th anniversary tour. My last time in the old place was the Foo Fighters all-day concert on July 4, 2015. As a District of Columbia native, factoids: old DC Stadium (RFK), is a week older than Dodgers Stadium; our Washington Senators top hitter was Frank "Hondo" Howard-- he hit his long-range homers to the left field bleachers. The seats where the homers landed were painted white; the Senators' dugout was on the third base line. Just above was the Presidential Box; the men's bathroom was less than private with an open trough where you faced each other while peeing; and 2005-2008 the Nationals played there while the new stadium was being built.

    I went to DC United's final home opener in 2016, then again in 2017 when they didn't have the new stadium ready. That bit of pavement where you came out of the stadium at is where they parked all the TV production trucks on gameday.

    Great Job on this one!!! @ 11:48 some of those little 2-tiered rooms are for coaching staffs of the teams who are playing... Some teams have their offensive coordinator or their defensive coordinator, sit in that box with other people & spotters, because you can see way better from up there... On the sidelines, it's hard to really see what's going on.... Then they talk on the headset down to the sidelines, call the next play, whatever....

    Yeah those Crown amplifiers would have been for the loudspeakers and playback systems throughout the stadium. They would have converted an audio feed from a mixing desk into speaker level, to be fed to passive speakers. Tons of power in those things.

    You guys need to come do a tour of a building in my hometown of Ironton, Ohio. It definitely has the rich history that you guys enjoy. At one time it was called the Selby Shoe Company and then was later a Wilson Sporting Goods manufacturing company. 🙂The building is fairly large for a small town business. My dad worked in the building during the 90s when it was called CableTron. I’ve always been so fascinated by the building and wished that I could go inside further than the front entrance. 😒Maybe you can do that for me!! 😇I hope you see this message and look into my suggestion.

    Came to town for a non-ballgame event there in 1996. It was cool to be able to see behind the movable stands to look at the grease-dust covered wheels, tracks, etc. Is this the first multi-purpose stadium, the kind that became so common in the 70's (and so retroactively ridiculed after)? The absence of a baseball team after 1971 made it okay to have a grass surface, so it escapes the criticism. I loved being there and miss this kind of place, which has been replaced by the 'perfect' NFL stadiums of today.

    Ah, man....out of all the places you guys have explored, this one feels like the saddest. I'm a football (soccer) fan and I have a fascination for stadiums big and small, and there's just something so tragic about a giant sporting venue like this being left to rot. It's a shame that D.C United couldn't have stayed and redeveloped the stadium, but to be fair to them, they probably couldn't fill a venue so large, and the stadium wasn't built for soccer anyway In England, a stadium of this size wouldn't generally be left abandoned. Build-able land is at a premium here, especially in cities. If a team were building a new new stadium, they would either tear down their existing one first and build a new one on the same site, or the old one would be getting torn down while the new one was being built elsewhere, usually because the old site would have been sold off to housing developers or something, and they were getting to work. If a stadium couldn't be repurposed it would be torn down fairly quickly over here these days.

    What you describe about England is pretty much what happened here. The Redskins had a new stadium built before they moved and DC United also got a nice new stadium. Demolition was supposed to start sooner but was delayed because of Covid. The only reason there aren't plans for redevelopment yet are because the site is controlled by the federal government and has a lot of restrictions on it. It's directly in line with the National Mall and the US Capitol Building so there's probably going to be a lot of tension and discussion surrounding how the land ends up being used.

  • @BadgerOff32

    @BadgerOff32

    Жыл бұрын

    @@TheProperPeople Ah, that makes sense. Covid definitely explains why it's not been demolished yet, but the federal ownership thing is something that doesn't happen here. There are a few teams nowadays who play at stadiums they don't own (like West Ham who play at the old Olympic Stadium which is owned by a private company, or Coventry City who play at a stadium owned by their local council) but more often than not stadiums (and the land they're built upon) are privately owned by the teams. If a team sell their stadium to a company that wants to redevelop the site, that work will usually start as soon as the last game has been played at the old ground (they don't hang about lol) so it's rare for a bigger stadium like this to sit empty for long at all. Smaller grounds are sometimes left abandoned, but they are usually in suburban areas, not cities, where redevelopment might not be as aggressively pursued. Thanks for the reply by the way. Love your content. It's great that you were able to explore a place as cool as this before it was lost forever!

    It's really ashamed this one couldn't be renovated. Up close, the individual spaces aren't that attractive (mostly due to bad renovations and repurposing throughout the years), but the overall architecture has aged very well. This was a fine example of good midcentury design. All that said, I understand the long list of reasons to replace vs. renovate, and that this stadium had lifespan longer that most. Still, when you consider that the replacement for the stadium is already under consideration for replacement (and wasn't well received from the beginning), I'd wonder if a major renovation could have bought RFK another couple decades. I think a lot of the newer stadiums will have even shorter lifespans (20-30 years). Cities are now in a constant race to have the newest and most extravagant facilities, and are at risk of losing teams if they can't/won't deliver. It's really unfortunate given the expense to taxpayers and the amount of resources that are required to build the behemoths.

    Having worked in arenas and stadiums for decades, this video had particular interest to me. Mixed feelings on this stadium. It's truly well past its prime, but seems to have good bones. BUT... It opened in 1961, so the infrastructure was designed in the 1950s and appears to be mostly still original. Bringing the infrastructure up to modern standards would be costly and invasive. The biggest issue would be adding luxury suites & amenities. After that would be ADA (elevators & bathroom mods). Seeing just how close to original this place is was enjoyable though.

    Part of the reason you saw tire tracks is because, not only does security patrol it, but the DC National Guard was occasionally parking vehicles on the field to make some room for their equipment. There was also talk, at one point, of using the grounds to make a Covid treatment area; but as you can see, with all the dilapidated equipment and innards, it wasn't feasible.
