Exploring Tasmania, Australia - Fly Fishing Plateau Lakes & Small Creeks by Todd Moen

Fly fishing Tasmania, Australia. High Plateau Lakes and the small creek Twigwaters for brown trout on dry flies. For this project I filmed on the Twigwaters and high plateau lakes of the amazing Australian island of Tasmania. Flown Under Down Under by Tourism Australia, I met up with Daniel and Simone Hackett of RiverFly 1864. RiverFly 1864 recently won the 2017 Gold Medal from the Australian Tourism Awards. I filmed Simone and Daniel stalking small creeks, or Twigwaters, of the north-east streams in search of small, gorgeous brown trout who live in a playground environment.
In the second segment of the tour, Daniel and I hiked into the Northern Lakes region inside the Tasmanian World Heritage Area near the Walls of Jerusalem National Park. Our basecamp was private RiverFly 1864 huts. I was able to capture some truly interesting animals on film, including the spiny little echidna, the famous jack jumper ants, wallabies and the venomous copperhead and tiger snakes. Tasmania is a magical place, and for a camera operator it's an exciting landscape to film and a place I’d like to return to with my family someday.
Special thanks to Eddie Bauer & Bauer Fly Reels for promoting Catch Magazine. Also many thanks to Tourism Australia, Daniel and Simone Hackett of RiverFly 1864 and Karen and Josh De Groot for their generous hospitality and new friendship. Finally, I'd like to recognize and appreciate Trevor Green Music accompanying this video, which include guitar, didgeridoo and percussion instruments in songs from 'Sacred Seed' and his newest album 'Voice of the Wind. Incredible video of the fishing in one of the world's greatest spots for it! I'm so thankful to be able to live here and experience what it has to offer on a regular basis. For those who don't live here, don't plan a trip to Australia without including Tassie! For a small island, it has such an incredible natural diversity.

    They're not as big as I thought, but size doesn't matter all the time, yes the river bottoms are very much like Rotorua in New Zealand and the same sort of colour water - I'm not sure about aussie but other places in the country get emerald water from the surrounding beech forest and some go blue because of snow fall and others are just plain and clear, an example is the Taupo fishery especially the Tongariro river just plain clear water.

    Hi there! 99% of the time it's all business. I did not hold a rod on this trip at all. No fishing was had on this one even though it was a huge time commitment and a once in a lifetime location. It's work for me, I have a family that I need to take care of and if I put the camera down to fish, something amazing always happens which means I could potentially miss the shot of the trip. Not worth it. I've learned to love getting the take through the lens. Some people call me crazy. Maybe I am... its a great job, but it is work for me. Dealing with fish and work is not easy.

  • @uncutfishing

    @uncutfishing

    6 жыл бұрын

    Joey, thanks for the answer. Not sure I got what you mean by blackfish (Girella tricuspidata? But it's not a freshwater fish), but this sounds like awful little. Are there species that were totally replaced by trout, or is it so that these rivers did not have large freshwter fish prior to the introduction of brown trout? Thanks again :) Edit: sorry, it appears the blackfish you were talking about are from the Gadopsis genus. It's a cool fish, never heard about it before. BTW, I'm asking this because it's weird to see brown and rainbow trout fished everywhere. I'm certainly not the one to judge, but imho if one goes across the planet to fish in the exotic waters and pays thousands of dollars for guiding alone, is it really a plus that (s)he finds the same darn trout there as (s)he would anywhere else or at home.. Anyways, at least it's summer there right now. Can't say much against that :)
