Probably the best review I have seen from anyone, for any of the 49 inch superwide monitors available. I currently use 3 x 27 inch Dell Ultrasharp monitors but they just take up too much space and too many cables now I want an adjustable height desk. Borrowed a Samsung G9 for a couple of weeks and hated the curve as someone only concerned with productivity not gaming. You have inspired me to order the Dell! Thank you

I also have a 32:9 monitor, but I use Linux with a tiling WM and it's absolutely an amazing thing. I got myself the LG 49WQ95X-W.AEU because it has a 144hz refresh rate but retains the usbc dock. I must say I absolutely love this thing.

@@ApplicableProgramming You probably won't get DisplayFusion working, but Linux being Linux it already has all that functionality available somewhere else. The most user friendly of those is probably PopShell, but even more customizable solutions are available with proper tiling window managers like i3, awesomeWM, herbstluft, dwm, etc

Awesome video - thank you for sharing - and making it very entertaining! I am replacing my 2x uneven monitors with a nice 40" and a 23" to sit above it on a long neck stand I will be telling my boss that in 6months it will have paid for itself based on my "increased productivity" 😂😂😂😂

It's an MSI gaming laptop I got from Walmart

I use a 34" ultrawide, and find that using its sides is much more comfortable when I slide sideways on my chair which thankfully has wheels if I need to work with the side portion for a longer time :) Generally I keep my main windows in the center and Secondary stuff to the sides

hehe, that is one way to solving it :) I never found the need to slide the chair on 49'', but I do not use edges actively though... I mainly use central part for active reading and work, and edges for status and occasional info (consoles and things like that)

I regret getting a 49” monitor. It’s MUCH better to have 3 and be able to have one (or 2) in portrait for coding. I find the height of a 49” monitor too constricting for coding. The reason I went with the 49” was that having 3 monitors would have required an external graphics box because my laptop was too old (thunderbolt 2) to cope with 3 monitors

@@ApplicableProgramming I work at a university doing medical imaging research for almost 27 years. I use Visual Studio Community. Usually the center 24 inch monitor has the code I am working on. The right portrait monitor has the organizational windows like Solution Explorer and the build log. The left most monitor may have the application if I am debugging, or code if I am comparing code from different versions. Also that is the window I have my web browser in most of the time and my file explorer.

I currently have 4 24" monitors together and 2 24" monitors on portrait mode. When the budget allows it in the future, I'll have 2 49" ultrawide and 2 27" on portrait. I just love reading documents, books, even comics (manga) on portrait mode.

Thank you. I have a smaller wide-screen that's curved which I wasn't sure about, similar as the concerns you mentioned; finding I really like it. Only have it configured for two windows at a time (Gnome keyboard shortcuts are set up to make that easy, Win+Left/Right). Am using "workspaces" so can quickly shift between them with Alt+Win+Left/Right. You motivate me to find a solution that gives more than two spaces with the Win+Left/Right key combination. Thanks again!

It is only pleasure. I tried smaller ultrawides about 32 or similar, and were a bit unsure of comparing it to two or three screens. So I took a chance for super ultrawide of 49, and it is definitively a different beast. Main problem is that I haven't found good review of using it effectively with more windows at the same size. What size are you using?

@@ApplicableProgramming Thanks again! This one's a 35". I do find that I tend to be "looking left or right" so having a third in the middle as my main focus might be an improvement. Also I'm a special case, my left eye mostly doesn't work, from birth. (So I have to turn my head more often anyway.)

@@ApplicableProgramming Yep, neck fights with eyes for dominance. :) ("Eye", that is! :) Mostly the left eye stays closed due to muscle weakness; seems like I'm winking a lot more than I actually am!) Randomly: I've been trying methelyne blue recently and it seems to help with brain fog (also have had several concussions in last decade). Don't know if you have issues it'll help with, just sharing that it has helped me. Thanks again!

For me the only thing that's kept me from biting the bullet on these is low PPI (108). Now that they have the 57" model that's a much higher resolution and PPI (140) its much more appealing.

yeah, I suspect that 57'' checks much more boxes :) I do like the ultrasharp color balance though, I've been using it for 10 years now, and I immediately notice something "wrong" when I sit in front of some other panel and color spectrum...

49" is clearly overkill for me, had a second hand G9 at 700$ and it involves too much turning of the head, and i ended up not using all the space anyway to avoid having to make so many neck movement + not needed. Ended up reselling it and getting an LG 35", can dock 4 windows side by side and perfectly does the job, no neck movement

that is actually a good point. I 80% of the time use central two screens in "simpler tasks". But I do still appreciate the possibility of using more if needed :)

My 43" Dell U4320 monitor shows its age and probably needs to be replaced soon. So I'm thinking of U4924W curved monitor. One con is sacrificing the vertical space. My current monitor is 2160 pixels high, I feel reluctant going back to 1440. Sure there is more real estate in width, but you read text vertically, so that limits the number of lines you see. One of the problems with my current 43" monitor is that it's hard to see the edges, because of the acute angle. So I keep the two Visual Studio windows at the center and consoles, other less used software closer to the edges. I wonder if curved monitor solves this problem. Unfortunately, there are only a couple of curved 4k large monitors manufactured and they are very expensive (I think they are all OLED), most curved monitors are ultra-wide with low vertical resolution.

that for sure is a valid thing to consider. I was "lucky" that I used monitor with 1200 pixels heigh before, so I didn't miss on anything :) but if you are used to higher resolution then there is a adjustment period for sure

yeah it is ridiculously expensive. I had one old arm that says it holds 13kg, so I just used that one. As long as I do not move the screen, it holds quite ok. Once in a month I need to readjust as the gravity takes its toll, but other than that it works. (disclaimer, do not use arms that do not support the monitor :) )

@@ApplicableProgramming First dual monitor was VGA & amber B/W monitor on a 80286 with math coprocessor yes back then that was bragging🤣, that’s when I learned Phosphorous green is the only way to go, I hated that amber monitor, but it was sure nice to run the program in VGA, and monitor it’s behaviour in the B/W monitor. I’ve always been multiple monitors when ever I can since then, but I have been thinking about those extra wide curved monitors are any good with Linux?

Great video. Some nice productivity tips with Display Fusion. Would love to see a video on it and how you use it to setup your windows. Little surprised you don't make use of Windows virtual desktops. This is a huge time saver. At work I have desktops dedicated to their own specific functions. Big time saver. I just wish Windows had the capability to jump to a specific desktop instead of having to cycle through all of them to get to the one you want.

Thanks! I am making a follow up on comparing three monitor setup with ultrawide, it should come out during the week, or next. About virtual desktops.. I tried it multiple times, I just forget that I have a program opened 'somewhere". My brain just doesn't remember what is already opened, so I keep either opening windows or keep searching them. As I concept I like the idea, but there is something missing for me in order to be able to use it in practice :( maybe I can research some additional software that helps with that. Do you imediatelly know where things are, on which desktop?

@@ApplicableProgramming I hear you and for the life of me I don't understand why Microsoft doesn't add the option for a text overlay to tell you the name of the desktop when switching. You can name the desktop so when you hit Win + Tab you can see the names of your desktops. Once you get use to it though you should know what the desktop is for once you switch to it. Now this is on Windows 10. Maybe Windows 11 has some improvements. I can't stress enough that virtual desktops are essential to productivity though. Once you get use to being disciplined about opening things on their respective desktops it gets even better. Just think of how useful having a fresh 49" desktop with a single keystroke would be.

@@yzScott I was never fan of side by side, but 43'' could be sufficient for that actually. Do you prefer one monitor over the other, do you keep your head only to one side? I do similar thing with ultrawide, my main screen is left part of the right half (if I would split screen in 4 sections, then third from the left is the main one). Then section 2 is the secondary, and others are when needed. Do you split them or use them full screen?

I use a 32:9 for work mounted to a hefty monitor arm, although part of the Samsung OLED G9 lineup. I find that there is never enough space for the type of work I do regardless, but with Mac it helps to use their Magic trackpad to quickly switch workspaces effortlessly when needed, and this monitor has changed the way I work to love being at my desk rather than being okay with working with just my laptop.

right? all small things add up.. At my previous home office, I just put up things together, so that they work. But over time a lot of small annoyances made me not want to work at home at all. Then I used some time to note them, and when we moved I used some ways of mitigating them. Now I like more working from home then going to the office, as I have better and more pleasant setup at home actually. do you do programming as well?

@@ApplicableProgramming I'm not sure what I am, undefined. For work I am a front-end developer or designer; occasionally it is beneficial to understand programming for work (Ruby), but I am not ultimately responsible for it. Hobby-wise I dabble in programming sometimes, like Python & Machine Learning with simple databases or in game dev. The visual side takes up quite a bit of extra space with referencing customer mockups and user interfaces. And projects I usually have multiple instances of my code editor open for reference and Github. Then working with clients, I have communication open as well. There isn't room for all of these communications and that would become disorganized, so I use Arc Browser which organizes clients by folders containing saved tabs, runs on Chromium (Arc B is for MacOS only). On my MacBook Air with the M2 chip multiple external displays are not supported and my main display puts my Webcam at an odd angle, so I use "Sidecar" to wirelessly extend to my iPad for video calls which is on a tilty stand below my main monitor and has a webcam clipped on it. I like the idea to take notes of how to improve your setup. I used to draw blueprints and take measurements to consider ergonomics, but having an adjustable standing desk and monitor arms for mic, displays, has made the process of getting comfortable fairly hassle free and not so stressful on my back. Now for my vision diminishing, the best thing for me has been having a window to stare out of and taking occasional breaks outside and keeping my monitor brightness reasonable when I am not doing color work. I also am trying whiteboard desk, but I find I don't use it often and would rather keep it clean. Sorry if that was a lot of information, I generally overexplain, as I work for a forum web software company, and we overthink everything. It can't be helped.

@@ApplicableProgramming Ah, and I work from home! I switch one cable into a Thunderbolt 4 dock for peripherals between my personal PC and work MacBook, the PC mounted below my desk. It can be finicky sometimes to get the MacBook to wake up. In Texas, USA I really appreciate working somewhere that allows WFH. This state is too spread out. My commute before at a different dev job was 3 hours per day during normal traffic, and that was not sustainable, but I also didn't want to live in the metroplex.

Great video. I thought about getting the Samsung G9, but according to the comments on Amazon; its alot of unhappy customers with receiving the G9 dead on arrival or monitor flaking out in 5 months. On top of that, they say Samsung customer support is the worse. I have 3 Dell 32 inch 4K monitors and absolutely love them. So why not get another Dell. I will pull the trigger and get a 49 inch before August and Dell is definitely the front runner.

OMG, I just saw, in your setup the biggest productivity hack for a web development. With that screen real estate you can have your code editor open, desktop size browser, tablet size browser, mobile size browser and live reload them all as you code + have space for Figma to be shown also.

that is pretty much how I use it, except that I do not have the Figma, but some other references I am coding of. But yeah, that will work just fine. It turns out we rarely used full 1080p resolution for web, so 1300px wide is good enought.

@@MrZerosixZeroone Hehe, nah.. you cannot do the same with two 27 monitors, I've tried. You can certainly achieve the same result with just a laptop, but you cannot open 4-5 apps side by side, and that is where ultrawide gives the advantage..

Hi, the screen does not care which laptop or desktop you have. If you want your laptop to charge via single cable, then it needs to support usb-c charging. If not, then you can use hdmi from laptop, and regular usb cable to access monitor built in usb hub

I use the dell 16x9 43” which gives more height for coding and I can see more width at once.

@@ApplicableProgramming when I need to, but my typical workflow is editor, tests, editor, etc and I often do that in stage manager so the windows just swap back and forth.

After trying different setups, I found the one that works best for me is an LG 43UN700-B and an LG 32UN880-B in portrait mode. The 43 gives me the flexibility to have wide or tall windows and the 32 in portrait allows me to see very long blocks of code when I'm trying to debug. I found myself moving my head to the side way too much when I had ultrawides.

@@ApplicableProgramming Both the LGs I mentioned above are 3820x2160 so I suppose regular. I find myself moving my head far, far less with these regular resolutions than an ultrawide. Try it yourself first with a cheap 43" TV and if you enjoy it, I highly recommend getting the monitor(s) above, especially the 43".

@ApplicableProgramming Thanks for the video! I noticed you have a Mac Pro on your desktop. How well does this ultrawide monitor work with MacOS? I'm particularly interested in screen splitting. Have you encountered any issues with that?

It is quite old machine and doesn't work with this resolution natively. I had to purchase some software that allowed at least similar aspect ratio, and then it kinda worked. But I did use it to debug mobile phones on it, but not as a main pc. The newer Macs work just fine with this screen, at lest the M1 machines we were testing, no issues at all. would you use Mac as primary pc?

I'm curious whether I need to open an app and manually split my monitor into three sections.. This is what worries me the most: can I have the same split-screen setup at each startup?

I used to have multi-monitor setups a decade ago but I switched to ultra-wides because I prefer them. My Visual Studio software development computer has a Dell 34-inch wide and so does my Unreal Engine editor computer. I can't get wider than 34-inch onto my desks, or I might go even wider, but I find the 34-inch to be a really good size for my seating placement and vision. I have six computers, a NAS, a scanner, and a multi-function laser printer all in one regular size 8x10 bedroom, so my desks take up both walls, with limited space for wide monitors.

@@ApplicableProgramming - I have recently had to spill over into another second bedroom for my computers, after purchasing a new Intel Xeon W7-2495X 24-Core, ASUS Pro W790 ACE, 512GB DDR5, RTX-3090 24GB. As I purchase new computers, I dedicate my older computers to specific roles. So my Unreal Engine 3D computer doesn't run Visual Studio. I have a Xeon W7-2495X 512GB for UE5/TerreSculptor. An R9-5950X 128GB for UE5/Max. An i7-6950X 64GB for VS2022/MSOffice/VMs. An i7-6800K 32GB for Linux/Windows. A 12th Gen for DEM Storage. Plus a few others (CCTV, HTPC, etc). I have an Asustor AS6704T for one step in my 5-2-1 backup of all of my computers. I develop the TerreSculptor software, so I also use all of my computers for various hardware levels of development test systems.

Yes, on windows I use DisplayFusion, but windows also has native support for similar functionality inbuilt now. I saw few software on mac as well, but forgot the names

I don't think this screen would be half as useful without it. I used the app on two monitor setup, and even then it made a lot of sense to split the second screen into multiple virtual ones

Interesting I found this. I got 2 Samsung Ody49 inch monitors. I had to get that 500 buck monitor stand to have them on top of another. Anyhow, I have been using Display fusion for over 8 years. I use to have a 6 24 inch monitor setup. I never knew Display fusion could control the monitors. I have been using MS powershell for the auto snapping windows. WOW. I love the DF view and usage better. So thank you for sharing this experience. I don't coide per say, i do build websites and I am old school so 6 monitors was my way of designing. Now with 2 49's I love it and best setup ever. And one last comment, I have a 5.1 logitech surround for my audio and 2 JBL Studio 8 monitors and it's tricky and tight on my desktop but t works

You can get 55inch 16:9 curved (such as odyssey ark 165hz) which pretty much exactly the same as two 49inch 32:9 curved on top of each other

Hey there. Did I get that right, you have a network adapter connected to the monitor? Currently, this is the only thing whats annoying me with the U4921DW - it has no network port. Is the adapter working well and do you use the USB-C oder the USB 3.0 port?

Hi. That is correct, I have a network adapter to the monitor, and it works just as expected. It is a Dell adapter, quite expensive but it was paid by the company so... I took the original. On the monitor I use other ports for peripherals, so the speed is fine. I connect the external drives and phones directly to the pc, just because it is easier for me to reach them, and probably goes faster (although I didn't test this). Is the 21 version some better then 19?

I think "this.translate.get(..." pieces can be extracted to avoid copy/paste

Yeah we tried few times, but we never figured out how to successfully do it with multiple observables. Granted we didn't try that hard to be honest, so after a while we gave up on it, as when mapping all observables with some functions, the lines of code would pretty much be the same. As you need to collect all the terms you need, and then you need to map all the terms back to their variables. and the old app we are migrating from already has this syntax, it is actually easier to use the same syntax then to do a lot of mental arrhythmic and still end up with same amount of code and copy paste. So... we haven't found anything prettier then this mess :( do you have some experience with rxjs?

How do you divide a single screen into multiple smaller screens like that?

I am using the Display Fusion software, and without it, the ultrawide experience would actually suck. It makes using the multi screen experience so much better for ultrawide

Great video. I have been using this monitor for years and love it. I do have a question about your desk. I have a 72"x30" Uplift standing desk. The desk is sagging a good 3/8" in the middle (I'm guessing due to the weight of the monitor being in the middle of the desk). I'm working with the Uplift warranty team, and so far I'm not impressed. Have you had any similar issues with your desk with this monitor combo?

Nah, nothing like that on my end. The monitor is big, but it is actually not that heavy compared two monitors. I mean, I can climb on any of my desks to change a lightbulb or anything, and they would not bend (at least not something noticeable). And monitor is under 20kg, while I am over 80...

Uplift Desk rates the lifting power at 355lbs...but failed to say it will sag with barely 60lbs of weight on the desk top. Their warranty is trash. I'm in the market for a new desk. May I ask which one you have in the video?

Thank you for the review. I bought the U4924DW. Do you notice a "grinding/buzzing"'-ish sound? It's very noticable especially when scrolling on a website.

hi. no I haven't noticed anything like it. I did notice that on a previous screen in the office, but not on this dell one. contact the support maybe? I doubt they will use much energy, but if you can record it somehow it could help

@@ApplicableProgramming Thanks for your quick reply! I powered the laptop through the monitor. When powering the laptop through it's dedicated power supply it stopped buzzing. Seems odd to me. The laptop has a max of 130w and the monitor 90w. Maybe that's causing some issues even though I have nothing open but chrome

@@mthvam yeah that is a capacitor in the power supply. It definitively doesn't sound right, and I am afraid it will just get worse over time. Unless it is a common problem that others have, I would try pushing it back for repair/replacement. It is better that you replace it now then later. but having that said, my hue lights have same problem (some of them), and it is a common problem. So I returned them and went for different lights which didn't have same problem . hope you resolve it!

yeah I tried it , and it works. Not good enough for my likings to be honest. Mac is pretty much forcing their own "this is how you should use it" philosophy which is, in my opinion, not suited for ultrawide. Even multi-monitor setup is hard for me on the mac. There are some programs, which at best allow you to manually position screen, but on windows this goes much much smoother I think.

In this video you have one source (notebook) and one super wide monitor, right? But that monitor has multiple separate windows screens (you have three Starts button). How exactly to achieve this??

@@immickful that is the magic of DisplayFusion, it handles all that out of the box. You can configure pretty much everything per screen, individual wall papers, start menu, snapping, default apps and so on. Check some examples they have, it has a bunch of customization. Are you on windows or ios?

@@immickful Yeah same here I guess. I use mac often, but my main go to is windows. I like tweaking and changing things that I want to. Not just by windows, but by software as well. But I had, and will purchase one m1 mac air, to use in the living room for surfing and similar office task, as there is just no equivalent windows pc that is reliable, silent, fast enough, great screen and with that powerful battery. So I guess I do not care about the system, just what is easier for me :D

2:56 whaat no no. Leave the laptop at the office. That friction is good. It’s not a bug. It helps you not work from home.

I tried 49 inch and returned it. For me it's not my thing. I prefer a wide screen 34 inch with a 27 inch nearby.

IMP Query: When this monitor connects two laptops or Desktop side by side say one side windows from my personal computer and other windows from my office laptop, can a single mouse and keyboard work on both windows without switching or clicking any additional buttons? I need to buy only it it works in this way....

Everything that is connected to the monitors usb will be switched to the second pc once you change the input source. If you want to show both sources at the same time, you can do that but then the monitor doesn't know when your mouse pointer has reached the end of one screen. For that you would need to install some software on both pcs, something like Mouse Without Borders or Synergy. But I have never used these programms, so I do not know how well they work to be honest. But that has nothing to do with the monitor then, you could do that with pretty much any monitor, so you can easily test that yourself

I work as a consultant, so sometimes we get same setup (10y old laptop, because that one is "security approved"), and usually there are no extra available screens at the office, so laptop it is. Then I try to work from home, which thankfully a lot of companies allow lately.

Hi! I would like to ask you if it's possible to use this monitor with a laptop with a good GPU (at least the RTX 4060 for laptop) for gaming. Because of my job, I travel a lot, so I am planning to buy a laptop for gaming instead of a PC and I would like to buy a 32:9 monitor for playing video games when I am at home. Hi, that is exactly how I use it in this video, the pc in the video is dell precission 5550, and it works just fine. Sometimes when I play full screen videos, or some other full screen application it would spin up the fans. But that also could be adjusted I think. About playing video games, if the graph card can push 5k video games at 60fps (max for dell ultrasharp) or which even monitor you buy, the you are of to the races. But it is about 5k screen or something like that, so... At home I game on desktop on something like rtx 2060, and it is not great, but... I play mostly skyrim, so.. I survive somehow

just one thing you didn't mentioned about economics. these kind of monitors usually replace a 2 or 3 monitors configuration. 2 or 3 monitors uses much more energy than only one with approximately the same area (and if the old monitors are very old they use more power too)

i just took a look at the spec sheet, both typical and maximum consumption of the 49" is about three times larger than a single 27" with comparable resolution and hz (U2722D). so if the specs are to be believed, there is no net saving.

@@4L3xN3t yes, i used the most recent comparable 27" from dell. my point is that the (new) 49" doesn't save energy when comparing it to three (new) 27" monitors. so energy consumption shouldn't be a factor when choosing between buying multiple monitors or this single widescreen. in other words, replacing three old monitors with three new ones should net the same energy consumption benefits as replacing them with this single widescreen, which is the argument i thought you were making.

What brand and type of standing desk are you using to carry the monitor?

This is some scandinavian desk, not sure exactly the brand and model. It uses the Linak legs, so I would call it a quality brand, but not very popular outside of scandinavia. I think they do not even have a b2c sale, only sell to companies

How well does it work with Mac Pro on your desk?

it doesn't :) well it does, but it does not have native resolution, only some weird zoom. Newer mac airs and pros laptops work fine, but this old cylinder does not support it. I used it occasionally just to copy some logs to iphone or similar

Hi, does anyone know how the shortcut windows + arrow right/left works on this super ultra wide monitor? I mean, in the ultrawide one, it allocates the windows to the half right or left. But as these ultramonitors screen works with more windows, how does it works if I wanna put a specific window in the middle right, for example?

I've just tested it on the ultrawide from the video, it woks as you described it. Win+ arrow left it allocates window to the left half, then circles to the right, then restores the size. I am sure display fusion can override that (or set something similar) to move window between its own predefined spaces.

The one in the video had a dedicated cart, not sure which to be honest, I believe it was NVIDIA Quadro T2000. It would work fine most of the time, but when watching youtube it would know to spin. But that seems to be problem with some fan settings that were set to high or cool or something. I've changed laptops and am using dell 5570 which has RTX A2000, and this one is silent, no problems at all. But again, it could be that I've installed some dell "noise manager" which just sucks, and it would spin fans whenever pc would use cpu for anything

Not really to be honest. I had 1200 screen before, so this was somehow an upgrade for me. And I am sucker for UltraSharp series from dell, got so used to colors and image quality that I chose Dell mainly because of that. I figure that at this size and price, pretty much everything is always a compromise, so... I am actually ok with 1440. where do you find it short, for which tasks particularly?

I will prefeer Void Linux with i3 window manager, virtual monitor manager and polybar in the middle :)

I used M1 Mackbook Air, and it worked just as expected. Older mac from 2015 didn't support the resolution natively, so I had to install some fix. But new ones work fine. I don't think Mac was ever in big and cluncky, or even multiple monitors. Apple was never much interested in raw "ugly" productivity, the would rather want you to use their pretty shiny white screens, and have a nice looking desk. This ultrawide is waaay ugly and outside of beauty standards mac users are allowed to use. But it works with M1 Mackbook Air and Pro, I've tested it before

sorry don't know what you mean by 4m, from the desk to the screen? I think there is more, i think like 12cm at least. I've mounted my screen on the desk mount, so I am not sure about the fabric stand. I don't have access to the 38 UW sorry, cannot compare them

Mate, I'm going to buy an UW monitor. I haven't decided which model I want to buy yet. Could you give me an update. I'm particularly interested in your UW monitor bundled with Macbook M1/M2. Have you heard of the project called Rectangle for MacOS? There is a PRO version providing more features. Can you test it with Macbook and the monitor? Is it good? My second question is why you didn't buy U4021QW? Why were you in favour of U4919DW, the price of the former is higher. Thanks.

My colleague uses Mac with this screen, but she uses max 3 screens, so she doesn't use it a bit more advanced then that. But she was also very very happy with it and she purchased one for her home office. She is on the sick leave so I cannot test it exactly like you described that easily. about 4021qw, i don't thing it was available when this monitor got out. Besides I see it is much more expensive, and a bit narrower, and I was not satisfied with narrower monitors to be honest. Haven't used them to test them, but they felt not big enough. We will get some similar screens at the office, so I might review them as well.

What is the Laptop brand - and GPU in the video which is driving this monitor?

It was also very loud, but that could be also my vent settings that I might have configured poorly. Do you use laptop for something graphically intensive?

Awesome review and video! I have just bought the monitor and I can't wait to receive it. I haven noticed that you use an external hub despite the monitor already provides many ports. What hub is it? I would like to stop using power cabels for my 2 laptops (Mac book pro 13" for work and XPS 15 for game dev and other personal stuff), but the monitor has only una usb-c port so I can't relly charge both of them at the same time, plus I probably have to use an HDMI cable or DVI-Port one for at least one of them (probably the Dell 😢). What do you suggest? Thank you

I think that is your only option. I would use Power Display port, or what ever the name is. Then you will need another (provided) usb cable to xps for using KVM and built in ports. I was using additional USB hub just for convenience, because it was already in the desk, and is easier to plug in temporary cables when testing different phones. But at home i use it pretty much as you described. So for second laptop you will need either multiple cables, or additional hub (that is quite expensive, but if you can get it from the company then it is worth convenience

@@MauroFranchi That is not the hub, just some "local generic" charging station for all the phones we use in dev. I do not know the name, Ive quitted from this company. The hub is the thing inside the desk, it was just there with the desk itself.

Thank you. The one in the main video is 160 with 70 I believe, and the one near the end at my home office, where I play some video games is 120cm, exactly same width as the monitor itself

Thank you for that informative video! At 1:58 I can see that you connected RJ45 via your monitor, which RJ45 to USB-C Connector do you use? Would be great if you could quickly describe how your connectivity from your laptop to your monitor looks, assume you only use one cable (usb-c)? So data and video is all via the monitor handled (network, mouse, keyboard), right?

that is the usb network adapter, I think dell brand, because of dell pc and dell screen. The connectivity works as you described it. I connect peripherals to the screen, and have a single USB C cable that goes into the monitor. I do use built in KVM of the monitor at home, meaning that I can switch from laptop to the desktop by just changing the monitor input setting, and mouse and keyboard will switch as well

yeah, 34 is great for two apps side by side, but that means you will always have your head turned more to one side only. And that is pretty much the solution of having two monitors side by side, a pretty bad for health if you ask me :( but it is great if you use single app full screen, and can utilize the realestate

That is exactly how I use it. That is how the keyboard and mouse are connected to the pc, as well as phones I use for development etc. So one cable goes to the monitor, and via that cable you get the monitor, usb hub, and a PD charger for the screen. Of course, this cable has to be USB 3.2 (I believe 3.2 is correct, might be 3.1, so check that) and your pc needs to support it as well. Another thing is that if you connect another pc via Digital Port and another USB to that second pc, if you switch input on the monitor from usb3 pc to the DP pc, all peripherals will be moved to the chosen input. That means that you have your laptop on usb3 with key and mouse, and if you switch monitor display input to second pc, same mouse and keybaord will be switched to the second PC as well.

@@ApplicableProgramming, it's still a little confusing me. Power from the monitor can only be from usb-c PD (got it). My question was (may be you know) some monitors doesn't have that feature with ucb-c connection and use usb-b instead. So, for example a popular gaming monitor AOC 24G2SPU does have that ucb-b hub, and I would like to find information may I still use that type of internet adapter with it. And one more addition question for you, cause ucb-c PD on my current AOC q27p3cv monitor constantly running. I tried several ways to make charging stop working, on macbook (aldente app), but nothing helps. How to stop constant charging macbook from the monitor? For this reason, I want to return it back. In order not to be tied to the built-in rj45 port in the monitor, I would like to know more about the method of connecting through an adapter. Your answer can be very helpful for everyone, thanks.

@@MovingToUSSA Sorry I am not nearly an monitor expert. I can tell you about this particular model that I am using, but not more out of that unfortunately. I just plugged in monitor into dell pc, and I plugged in rj45 adapter from dell, into dell monitor, and all worked fine. I never used any macbook on it, nor any other method then what is described above, sorry

Have you tried FancyZones? How it is in comparison with DisplayFusion?

I haven't tried it, I think Microsoft come up with it after I was already using DisplayFusion. I see it is easier to customize zones with FancyZones, in DF it is a bit clunky to define zones. But I do set them only once in a while so... DF can also put buttons on top of each app that I do use, and it has also macros for different layouts and windows positioning (that works like 80% of the times for me). But since FancyZones is free, and it is quite powerful, so I would start with that first and then see if you grow it out :)

This review is very helpful! The plan is to purchase 2 49" Dell monitors for home and work. Do you know how the monitor would handle a remote access app like SplashTop? When I work from home I access my desktop in the office with SplashTop. I figure the 49" monitor would be limited to what the app allows. If you have any insight that would be awesome. Thanks for doing what you do!

I haven't used SplashTop, perhaps emailing them might give you some insight into how it works. I've tested remote desktop at home, and it works just fine. But what it does is it adjusts windows size to my client device, that way windows always adapts to my screen, regardless of which monitor I have attached, if that makes sense. (so if I my main pc has a 49'' attached, and I remote into it from 13'' laptop, windows will just adapt all windows to 13'')

how do you mean it doesn't support window management? isn't that the software thing, or is there something more apple is doing? few of my colleagues use this exact model in the office with apple, they have no complaints

meh i prefer multiple 4k 43"+16x9's. Not only is it ultra wide but its also twice as tall. i have 3 of them in a slightly angled u shape but for coding/etc i only use 2 of them at a time. A total of 7680x2160 pixels (with the 2 monitors) is plenty of real estate and comfortable to look at even at the far corners. some times i play videos on the 3rd one but that is more of background distraction while i work. the first one is 144hz and is great for gaming.

have you ever seen windows apps on a 43 inch monitor? unless its a game or a video its overkill. i use multiple windows for coding debugging, runtime, database, browsers , etc.. although sometimes i do stretch sql across both monitors so that i can see every field.

with Display Fusion? It seems fixed now. It always worked fine on my home desktop, only problem was my work laptop. I've got new laptop for work and never experienced the same problem, so it is either fixed or it was that laptop issue.

Great video!. Have you used it to switch between "personal" and "work" pcs? I have two 23 monitors and a 24 and I switch quite constantly. My keyboard already supports two pcs, but not mouse and other peripherals. I don't do programing all the time, but would like something seamless to switch between pcs. Still looking for a reason as I still feel this is quite overshooting to me? Thankss

yes, that is how I use it at home office. The screen has a built in KVM and is able to "move" everything that is plugged in in its usb ports to two different pcs, depending on the source you are using. So I have keyboard, mouse, streamdeck and audio DAC plugged in into the monitor, and when my picture source is usb-c then all those devices are plugged in my work laptop, and when I just switch sources on the monitor to my desktop, all those devices are then being "plugged in" into my desktop pc automatically for me. @@bessalf good question. I think there is keyboard shortcut, but you would have to install software to both PCs, and I am somehow too lazy to do that, so I just use buttons on the screen itself as I switch maybe once every few days. Although I could check out what possibilities are

@@bessalf that is possible with LG ultrawide, i've seen recently someone showcasing that. In practice I've used side-by-side view maybe once, so I haven't pursued it further. Using two at the same time reminds me of using two monitors, so... kinda defeats the purpose of the ultrawide for me :)

I use a 43” 4K VA Gigabyte monitor for gaming and now I use it to revise C++ on MS Visual Studio in console mode. The VS window takes up a third of the screen and I use the remaining real estate in searching for C++ hints and Stack Overflow etc.

@@ApplicableProgramming Yes, and the monitor has good speakers, so I relocated them, and it also has a KVM built in so I used it working from home on the office laptop. So getting this monitor reduced the clutter, when I got rid of the second monitor, I didn’t miss it. BTW this monitor runs at 144Hz. So it’s not just a big monitor, it enabled me to relocate other equipment like 2nd monitor, speakers.

@@darylcheshire1618 if you do not notice then it is good, dont think about it :) Have you used IPS panel for text? If you get a chance, try and compare I am curious if newer VA panels are much better. The ones we have at the office are clearly not good. But if you move your head left to right, you should notice that dark colors are changing opacity and contrast, especially noticeable on dark themes in text editor. Whenever I used VA panels the text has slight background shadow and washout, and it gets difficult to read. So I figured that on ultrawide it has to be annoying to deal with considering the size. I find it super annoying on 24+ screens we have at the office, so I think that on ultrawide it would drive me crazy. But I do a lot of photography and pixel peeping so I notice that black color contrast washout

Great video! i just purchased a samsung 49", but i always wonder, can you use multiple inputs from a source and have them PBP to simulate 2x27"?

@@TimothyTrisnadhama so that you can have two monitors side by side on the same pc? :) I think that is how it works internally. the monitor has two 27'' panels that via some drivers gets presented as a single monitor (with two screens). Or I completelly misunderstood what you are trying to achieve :(

i have been thinking about getting an ultrawide - Samsung Odyssey Neo G9, LG 49WL95C-W 49, ASUS Republic of Gamers Swift PG48UQ 47.5" 4K HDR 138 are my current options(any suggestions are welcome) any one who is currently using an ultrawide what is your experience? my main concern is that I don't want to see individual pixels, I plan to plug the monitor into an asus zenbook pro duo 15 oled ux582, will there be any issues on the monitor? will it look as crisp as it looks on my laptop screen, I will mostly use this for programming in vscode and intellij, anyone with similar setup please comment which monitor you think is the best option

While you wait for someone more relevant, can you compare it with some other monitor that has similar pixel density? I use dell precision 5570, and it has waaay clearer display, because it is 4K on a 15'', so a lot of pixel in a small space. It cannot even compare with other bigger 4k displays. So check your laptop pixel density, and compare that with other external screen. Usually Laptops will beat everything else out there (maybe not Apple displays), but then try to find similar display to the one Neo G9, and see its pixel density. That should give you the idea about what compromise you are making (and there are always compromises to be made :) )

I have a widescreen LG used with a MacBook, and I HATE it because of having to move the mouse cursor to the far ends of the screen for window control, etc. HOWEVER, your video looks like the Dell screen can create multiple virtual monitors; do I understand that correctly? If so, I would love a video on how the software works to configure multiple virtual monitors. I'd also love to know if the same can be done to support macOS with virtual monitors (I think I saw a Mac Pro on your work desk?) Thanks in advance if you can cover those things.

yeah it looks like that, but that is the DispayFusion software that is only on windows. My colleague has mac and has a software she uses, but for me it is not that poweful to be honest. She is very happy, but she uses about 3 apps at the time. She is on the sick leave, but she was using one if the three most popular ones, which you are probably familiar with. But again, it is unfortunately not as good as tools on windows. You basically have to manually position windows each time, which is so annoying for me. To be honest, I love a lot of things on macs, but the least polished experience is working with windows in custom sizes, and using most of the real estate. I guess they think this 4-5-6 windows at the same size looks ugly when someone walks into the office (which it is), so they refuse to let you customize it.

BTW, I switched from Windows to Mac in 2009 - after many years on Windows - because the Mac was so much better for web development than Windows. There were many things I missed from Windows that Mac did not have, or did differently. And 14 years on some of those things about macOS still bother me. But now and there are many things from macOS I miss when I use Windows. And switching back and forth between Cmd-key and Ctrl-key is really painful. #fwiw

@@gearboxworks Yeah I know what you meant, unfortunately I do not have any experience with it more then DisplayFusion. I have found what works sufficiently good for my usecase and wanted to share it here, so I do not experiment very much with it (lack of time). I use both mac and windows, for clients but also at home. Apart from ctrl and cmd, rest I sort of ignore at both systems. But I've been using windows for 25 years now, so I somehow will default to it. Although I do appreciate a lot of things that IOS has (lack of really powerful tools for tweaking the system on different levels is not one of them)

can I use 3 or 4 PCs simultaneously with this monitor?

Hi, I know you can use two, but I think you can use three PCs. I remember seeing that in the settings - however check the documentation if this is critical for you :)

I am actually considering them for when working on the road, in hotels and public spaces. So far my understanding is that reading and writing on them is quite tricky as the text is not as easily readable. But that is just a matter of time I think until they are so good that you can use them professionally. Right now the image quality is just for a "gimmick" as far as I had understood it..

@@himawanthsomarowthu9897 oh no sorry I haven't used any of those. I used the one from microsoft, and works great. But it is a bit bulky. But any of them are for sure not replacement for screen that you want to sit in front of for 8-12 hours. That is still far far away in the future

@@ApplicableProgramming yeah absolutely they are not at all replacement for that long real work hours maybe useful for couple of hours in college and any place where screens doesn't exist and need a big screen to work , but as you said you have tried Microsoft Halo ones but now tech dimensions have completely changed they are just 80grams and almost 4k , try them ones 😄 ar glasses for productive are so fascinating as they are available for masses now.

There is though, the G9 OLED G95SC, announced at CES in January it will soon be hitting store shelves (especially considering Samsung released the product page n their official website just a few days ago) Definitely NOT recommended for programming though, as QD-OLED is more affected by burn-in than even W-OLED technology (as per RTings burn-in test 2023) and the triangle subpixel structure causes color fringing on text.

In this video I used dell precision 5550, and I feel it was a bit weak/loud for the screen. It would spin up the fans quite often, if I would to listen to music on youtube even. But now I use dell 5570 which has a bit stronger graphic card, and it works just fine. It could be that some fan setting was just wrong, not sure to be honest. I also use some amd desktop with 2060 gtx, and it works fine for what I use it for. I do not play that many games, so that helps as well. do you use only laptop at work?

This might sound like an odd use case, but how does screen share on applications like MS Teams / Zoom work with such a big screen. I'm thinking of replacing my 3 screen setup with one ultrawide, but am worried that when I am using MS Teams / Zoom for work purposes, the image on the call would be skewed if I shared my 1 extra wide monitor.

Excellent question, and I am now editing my "3screen vs ultrawide" video that I recorded as a lot of people are wondering how they are compared. You can share the screen yes, and they cannot see anything on it no. So... What someone has suggested here in the comments is the software called "Just share window" or something like that, which is pretty much a transparent click trught window with nothing in it, and you would then share that "window frame" and move it around the ultrawide. And everyone would see anything that is behind it. So far I am doing ok with sharing one particular app that I am presenting, seems to work fine, however... it basically sucks. Luckily most of my sharing is done on the company laptop, and then I just share that entire monitor, so somehow I get by. But yeah, test some alternatives before you sell and see how annoying they would be (and for sure they will be). What is even more annoying is powerpoint, when I maximize it in full screen on laptop monitor that I am sharing, notes and every other thing covers my ENTIRE ultrawide as well.. So I can only see powerpoint. Shomehow I managed to fool it last time, but as soon as I click chrome to google for something, even the presentation on the second screen dissapears.. powerpoint is definitively not optimized for online presentations

@@BloodScientist spoiler alert, that is pretty much the only place where I personally would find find advantage of multi monitor setup. Obviously ultrawide is a compromise on every front - with some advantages. So as they say it is not better, just different. But it is a compromise, so it is not the fastest panel for gaming, not highest resolution for videos and photos, not highest contrast or color for movies and graphic design, etc etc. But it can do a lot things decently good for me. Can you estimate in percentage what are your main daily tasks?

@@ApplicableProgramming the truth is, I don't game. I rarely "watch" things on it except casual things that play in the background so I am not too fussed if they aren't the highest resolution (I'm from the torrent generation, used to watching things at 360p). Teams is a must for me for work, and I don't keep my laptop screen open (sits closed far away). For my personal work I do video editing, lecturing so will need PowerPoint and teams. Might have to stick with my current set up for now.

This beast is super ultrawide monitor, not 'just' ultrawide which is 21:9 ratio ☺
