A disturbingly high number of these videos have the same kind of story: "indie filmmaker(s) put(s) heart and soul into making their picture on a shoestring budget, only to have some ruthless distributor or production company screw them out of everything." It makes me really grateful for the way the internet has been able to facilitate so many aspects of film production independently and on the cheap.

FYI, the plane that crashes in the opening and that Denise was flying on was a McDonnell Douglas DC-9-30, which back in the day was a very popular commercial airliner. The stock footage shows the DC-9 in the livery of Hughes AirWest, which were taken over by Northwest Airlines in 1980.
What a forgotten little gem of a film. I saw it on on VHS back in the 90s because I was drawn toward the great cover-artwork. Really dark and creepy. I can also imagine, that it could have had some influence on the makers of "It Follows". The walking manifestations of supernatural STD reminded me of the silent dead people hunting the lead actress in "Sole Survivor".
Great video bud. Had no idea this movie existed. Was fun to learn about it.
Wow, I'd love to think you actually listened to me all those years ago when I suggested you do a video on this forgotten classic. I recommend it to everyone.

@@GoodBadFlicks - When he used to blog, i would follow Furious D (dknowsall.blogspot.com/) a blogger that reminds me a lot of you. You should just do a search on one of his rants about "net profits" with quotes like... "You have more luck seeing Bigfoot shopping with the Loch Ness Monster in downtown Manhattan than seeing any net profits. These are the receipts with the total costs of production, marketing, distribution, and studio overhead deducted, and that pretty much sucks the box office dry." He really taught me how the business of Hollywood is so messed up and every time I watch one of these exploring videos that lesson is reinforced.
Have you seen the Australian film THE SURVIVOR which is based on James Herbert novel that came out 3yrs earlier. Slightly different but that deals with the sole survivor of an airline crash but treads similar ground. M. Night's UNBREAKABLE had to be rewritten because it was considered to close to Herbert's book.
I saw this movie as a video rental and have never forgotten it. Especially the image of the heroine sitting unharmed in her plane seat.
I never hear anyone talk about this movie...I was probably one of the few people that saw it in the theater as a kid with my aunt! Nice bit of nostalgia ;-)
The script writer for Final Destination must have seen Sole Survivor. In the original un-made X-Files script "Flight 180" by Jeffrey Reddick which would later be rewritten into Final Destination there is a scene where Sole Survivor is explicitly mentioned playing on a TV.
Honestly Cecil, your videos help me so much. I really can't thank you enough

Back in 1989, there was a TV movie, mini-series, called DEAD OF NIGHT, with Bruce Boxlightner and Lindsey Wagner. It also dealt with a woman who had survived a near death experience. And Death sent its minions to kill her for not dying when she was supposed to.
I'm glad you covered this one! I saw it when it was released on VHS, and it is still to this day one of the only movies to legitimately creep me out.

I hate when people call it "Its so bad, its good". Bullshit, its a fun movie. For fuck sake, AC/DC is playing in the background. I guess the trailer ruined the film a bit, it tried to be serious with Halloween 3 soundtrack. Weird choice. Trucks you can call "its so bad, its good" because it was trying to be serious which is laughable.
i remember watching it on its VHS release in the 80's when i was in highschool and it creeped me outmore than any other horror film at the time. I tracked a copy down a few years ago and rewatched it finding that it still had that creepy edge

I saw this movie when I was a kid, I grew up in LA and saw the movie in Downtown L.A. At the Tower theater, ( its on the same block as the Orpheum theater that in a ton of movies, commercial and American idol) unfortunately it's closed now, gorgeous theater for sure. Saw it in a Triple bill with both Children of the corn and Madman ( I hope you do both these films too)
This video was perfect. Great editing, information, narrating, and clips. You rock.

This is an interesting movie. I remember first watching this in the mid 1980s on cable. A moody setting and creepy. Yes there are a lot of similarities to Final Destination. One of great ideas of old school horror, less is more... quite underrated and under appreciated.
There's also a similarly-themed supernatural thriller called "Passengers" (not the other film called "Passengers" with Chris Pratt - this was earlier), about the aftermath of a plane crash. I don't remember much except it was reasonably good, and it was more a drama than horror.
Couldn't agree more with the comments, man you deserve way more subscribers. For some reason 'It Follows' reminds me of this movie, I think its the way the dead people look in that kind of vacant state when they come for a victim

This sounds like the film The Survivor (from 1981 starring Robert Powell) In the film Powell is the pilot of a plane that crashes and he is the sole survivor. A psychic is haunted by visions of the people killed in the crash. It was based on a book by James Herbert. I dont remember much about it (other than a burnt up little girl) but it scared the shit out of me when I was a kid.

I'm yet to see another horror film called "The Survivor" that came a year before this and also deals with a sole plane crash survivor and the dead victims appearing. I don't know if the creators of Sole Survivor even knew it existed.

"IFM offered them money up front, as well as a cut of the theatrical profits..." Oh God, I know where this is going. Seriously, with so many predatory studios screwing producers and filmmakers out of their profits, it's a goddamn miracle that any of these wonderful old horror movies were made.

Eberhardt must have loosened up after this, as for 'Night of the Comet' he let Robert Beltran completely rewrite the character. Originally it was a cholo gangster with a heart, but Beltran reworked it as a hardworking man looking after his mother. In fact Hector not being a stereotype is part of what makes the film work. Plus Beltran impersonating Burt Reynolds at point.
Woooo. New Video!
Have you seen Dragonslayer (1981)? That could be a cool video. Also love your channel!
THANK YOU! SUCH A GREAT MOVIE. One of the best thrillers I’ve seen for the last couple of years. Such a pity this terrific actress lost interest in the movie industry. I love her. Feminine and cute but still strong and persistent, not very pretty but so sexy. I hoped that she found her success in TV or maybe not so popular films, but… Director is also great. And music is perfect.
Any chance of you exploring The Monster Squad? Greatest movie of all time!
I've heard of this but never saw it. I also confuse it with a similarly named move from 2000.
Sole Survivor looks GREAT if you see one of the HD transfers, and it looked great in the theater.
I wonder how many of these ‘sole survivor ‘ movies took inspiration from James Herbert’s “Survivor” novel from 1976.
Maximum Overdrive would a perfect good bad flick episode, considering that Stephen King was high on cocaine during filming and that the cinematographer lost an eye after they blew up the truck stop. A piece of shrapnel hit him in the face and sued the production company.
Any chance of you doing an Exploring video on Dan O'Bannon's The Resurrected or the movie Screamers?

I never seen soul survivor but I can tell you that there was a film even before that one back in 1981 produced by the same producers of mad Max in the Road warrior called the survivor. Which was based on a novel, the theme is the same only with a pilot who suffers survivors guilt in a major plane crash that must be seen to believed, it’s one of the best special effects I ever saw utilizing a real jet that has been gutted and on the crane. This is an Australian film with a British actor, and it has pretty much death scenes like final destination. This film was shot Anamorphic, and it’s an absolutely beautiful looking horror film, you should look it up, I’m gonna look forward to watching Soul Survivors.

This movie scared the shit out of me as a kid. I got it on vhs
Are you sure she isn't a superhero like Willis in Unbreakable? I love knowing all those obscure movies which I remember in the video stores but never got the chance to see them. Thanx!!!
No mention of the film produced based on the James Herbert book; The Survivor. Similar (ish) story line. Think it was released a couple of years before hand.
Please do a video for Altered States!!! Excellent video today
I have never heard of this movie but the remake is on some streaming services.
Suggestion for a film to review: 1983 horror film "Eyes of Fire". The film's a bad trip with terrified homesteaders, mud people, a tree bound devil, etc. When I first heard of Vvitch, I thought it might be a loose remake of this film.
Carnival of Souls (the movie) from 1962, was essentially a DIRECT ripoff of the Twilight Zone episode called, "The Hitch-Hiker" from 1960, about a woman driving cross-country who keeps seeing a hitchhiker everywhere she goes. He is DEATH. She was killed in a car crash and he keeps appearing everywhere to take her away (she doesn't know she's dead). "Sole Survivor" is more based on the Twilight Zone episode called, "Twenty-Two" from 1961, about a woman hospitalized and who keeps having a recurring nightmare in which she is led to Room Twenty-Two, the morgue, by a nurse (who represents death). She's scared that if she leaves the hospital and goes on a flight, that the plain will crash. As soon as she leaves the hospital and goes on the plain, it DOES crash.
Talking about shooting yourself in the foot. The distributors screwed over all the people that made a smash hit. But in doing so ensured that no more smash hits would be made by those people. If they treated them right they could have had a string of profitable films.
This one's hard to find. 50 dollars on Amazon! Ouch. Might have to wait a little while til I find it cheaper than that.
